I vacuumed my hair trying to get rid of lice

Fedup with scratching and the treatments haven't worked so while I was hoovering the house I got so annoyed I held it to my head it felt really good 😂
Everyone else thinks it's very weird.

Vodka, cling film, conditioner and a nit comb. Seriously.

Souse your hair in the vodka- you literally want it to be dripping wet and then some. Cover your head with cling film and drink the rest of the vodka let it sit there for approx 2 hours. Then, without rinsing your hair, towel it dry and then apply loads and loads of conditioner. Use a nitty gritty comb and comb it all out in small sections.

The alcohol kills anything alive and dissolves the glue sticking the egg cases to your hair. Conditioner makes everything super greasy and easier to comb out. I've got arse length hair which is a pain to comb- doing it like this makes it easier.

This is genius.

Imagine greeting the parcel delivery guy arriving at the 2hr clingfilm stage though!

Another vote for the NittyGritty comb. Regular combs, even really fine-toothed ones just don’t work.
After years of trying everything, this is the only thing that always works.

Bumblebeeinatree · 04/04/2024 17:31

We had a cat that loved the vacuum cleaner, he had long hair (and probably fleas) it made his grooming so much easier and I'm sure got rid of a lot of fleas, flea dirt and eggs. He was an absolute pain, as soon has you got the vacuum out he was under it.

Gunz · 04/04/2024 17:31

You need one of those electronic zappa combs. My daughter used to use it first thing when she got in the house after school. Well passed that stage now - but when she was in primary school - it was a constant issue.

DuckonaBike · 04/04/2024 17:35

Yes, I’d second the electric zapper comb. Less messy and more effective than all the lotions, and it’s quite satisfying frying the little bastards.

Doingmybest12 · 04/04/2024 17:40

I used to look through the hair especially around the nape and cut each hair off with an egg with nail sissors and throw it away. It ended up being the best way but hard to do it on yourself.

CammyChameleon · 04/04/2024 17:58

Fucking hate lice, going through them yet again now. Combed the whole house, DS1 appears to be patient zero, seems to have only spread to me. I've had dandruff issues for twenty years, so an itchy scalp doesn't make me think "lice!"

Got Hedrin 8 hour treatment for free from the chemist (yay, Wales) and it appeared to be killing adults way before the 8 hours were up!

If I could choose two species to go extinct, it would be lice and fleas, fucking things!

AllHopeandRainbows · 04/04/2024 18:20

My mum used to soak our hair in brown vinegar. Absolutely stank and stung my eyes 😂 but it worked x

Update: although just Googled and apparently it’s entirely anecdotal and doesn’t work 🤷🏼‍♀️ well my whole childhood has been a lie. Maybe I still have nits 25+ years later 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

AllHopeandRainbows · 04/04/2024 18:24

@CammyChameleon can we add thread worms to this 🙏🏼 DD had these recently and it was 🤮

Deborah54 · 04/04/2024 18:34

I don’t have lice but I think I’ll hoover my head just for the novelty 😂

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 04/04/2024 18:36

I can understand why you wanted to do it, but not sure it will help! Good luck shifting them.

RockahulaRocks · 04/04/2024 18:49

There’s a place in Wandsworth that will charge you £120 for hoovering your hair to get rid of lice (not just for fun). Results in our house have been achieved using NitWits spray & the white lice comb from Superdrug on DD (most effective one I’ve come across to date), otherwise smothering the wee shites in hair dye. I also treat DD routinely every 4-6 weeks after one of her nursery teachers mentioned that the staff anecdotally keep the lice at bay using this method.

hampsteadmum · 04/04/2024 18:59

Professional lice treatment companies like Hair Force hairforceclinics.com/ do exactly that. Vacuum the hair. Check out their videos. They have special attachments as I recall. I've taken my kids there when they were young. They also go through the hair with a Nitty Gritty comb after vacuuming. I suggest you "re-vacuum" in a week and keep using the nitty gritty comb if you can. It's hard with curly hair but with some Moroccan Oil (or similar) it may become easier.

Meganmeccano · 04/04/2024 19:02

Near where we live is a super expensive swanky clinic salon type place that vacuums out nits for you.

I have thick wavy hair, so I sympathise. I remember one time resorting to bleaching my hair blond to get rid of them. However last time 2 doses of Hedrin worked.

Antibetty · 04/04/2024 19:04

it is weird. however, if it feels good ... just be aware that nits (the eggs) are sticky and not so easily removed. get a nit comb on the job!!

Hedgehog23 · 04/04/2024 19:07

Hedrin once (but use it twice maybe 7-10 days apart). Nit comb. Check free circa a week after second application. Treat everyone in the house.

EnglishBluebell · 04/04/2024 19:21

Zooeyzo · 04/04/2024 15:33

I've been combing with conditioner and did the treatment for 3 weeks.
Anyway just to report I've stopped itching.
I'm going to fry the eggs with the straighteners.

As I said earlier, you won’t kill any of the LIVE eggs as they're less than 1mm from your scalp which is too close to get a hair straightener! Yes you'll kill the actual lice but not the live eggs! So in 10 days - 2 weeks they'll hatch. All you're doing is cementing the dead eggs to your hair

Zooeyzo · 04/04/2024 19:24

Well if its good enough for people to pay over a £100 I'll use my hetty hoover and hope for the best! I usually pick them out of the kids hair so know that eggs are difficult to get but the lice are easy to move from the hair but very fast so tend to hide.

Me too. I'm going to join this thread for the solidarity because I'm losing sleep over it.

We definitely, I mean I think definitely, eradicated dd's headlice about two months ago and then she caught a fresh load last week. She hates being combed

I didn't catch it the first time but I'm so itchy now, I'm convinced I've got them.

But last time she had them none of us caught them... I still scratched my head raw just thinking about them, making me think I had them.

Like Lady Macbeth scrubbing her hands till they bled because she thought she saw blood on them! Aaargh

Mumoftwo1312 · 04/04/2024 19:31

Ps the "me too" was the dandruff/lice issue!

Ilovegoldies · 04/04/2024 19:31

I actually miss nits. I used to love combing them out. I'm a bit strange like that.

MyCousinDaphne · 04/04/2024 19:42

Tea tree oil neat has always worked here. 15 minutes on and then comb comb comb with conditioner every day for a week. You need to wash the oil out with fairy liquid before water or it never comes out!
