Fedup with scratching and the treatments haven't worked so while I was hoovering the house I got so annoyed I held it to my head it felt really good 😂
Everyone else thinks it's very weird.

Comb Comb Comb

It's a nightmare. Youngst chilf has had lice on/off 4 years in primary. Still fighting.

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 04/04/2024 15:28

@pinkhorsesarentunicorns How long before you stop smelling like a distillery? 😄🍸

Had several bouts of nits with my children, I was so thankful they have short straight hair and my husband was glad to be bald! Bought a multipack of head lice remover as we were getting through it and haven't had a nit since, so the pack is still sitting in my bathroom gathering dust.

You're not unreasonable because itching is a horrible thing and people will do extreme things for relief. I have eczema and I don't even want to share some of the stuff I've tried 😂

But I'd recommend trying the treatment again and just ignoring the time it tell you to leave it in for. I tried the 20 minute one and I was still combing live ones out of my children's hair an hour and a half later. Put it in overnight with a shower cap on and they will all be dead in the morning.

Exactly we do the shower cap overnight thing too. Works a treat and kills the fuckers

Zooeyzo · 04/04/2024 15:33

I've been combing with conditioner and did the treatment for 3 weeks.
Anyway just to report I've stopped itching.
I'm going to fry the eggs with the straighteners.

Re: persistent re-infestations, I’ve got a lot of hair and it’s long too. My kids all got them repeatedly over a course of several months but I didn’t, until one day I looked in the mirror and I had the little fuckers galloping around on my lengths like it was parasite derby day. After my husband wrestled the clippers from my hand and prevented me doin a Britney I went to the chemist who took one look at me and gave me -

Derbac

killed the lot in one go, never to return. She said it was a too intense for the kids, don’t know if it’s a bit deadly. I believe lice can also start to survive permethrin? God help us all 😜

Thanks a lot @Zooeyzo I can't stop scratching my head now. 😬

I would shave my hair off

Slightly dramatic 😂

Mummame2222 · 04/04/2024 16:17

Treatment for all every night for a week.

Mrbumpssmile · 04/04/2024 16:18

I've done that. It didn't work, because nits stick and lice cling on tight, but it was interesting.

awitchoftroubleinelectricblue · 04/04/2024 16:23

They used a little hoover thing to get rid of the mites or whatever they were on the baby hedgehogs when we took them to a rescue place. I think you can pay for head lice treatment where someone comes and does the same thing to your head?

1daughterand3sons · 04/04/2024 16:24

DD has thick curly hair nits drove me crazy. I found it easier if I straightened her hair before using the nitty gritty comb and we didn't have lots of tears.
She would scream the house down if I used the comb when her hair was curly.

AWellReadWoman · 04/04/2024 16:24

I have really thick, really curly hair and after my DS brought them home from pre school had a nightmare getting rid of them. In the end the only thing that seemed to work was a home hair dye kit and hair straightening. A lucky side effect of going grey!

WhamBamThankU · 04/04/2024 16:26

I used washing up liquid to suffocate lice when I couldn't get rid of them in my daughters hair for ages. Apparently some become immune to the solutions.

PermaLice · 04/04/2024 16:27

Vacuuming doesn't work - nits are cemented on to the hair shaft. Anything you got from that is purely in your mind.

Straighteners reduce the load, but as there's a couple pf millimetres right next to your scalp that they cannot reach and because adult lice are mobile, you cannot get them all. But it's useful in reducing the load.

You needs to treat and condition/comb extremely thoroughly for 3 weeks. Because you need to cover the entire reproductive life-cycle of the nits. So that's every two to three days for 21 days.

Use either the pesticide version of treatment (but be aware that some nits are gaining resistance) or the smothering sort alongside.

Lemonhead88 · 04/04/2024 16:28

I remember having nits as I kid in the 80s. My mum was away so it was just me and my Dad - he had me lean over the bath with a towel over my face and poured a bottle of vodka over my head. Did the trick 🤣

Lupuswarriors · 04/04/2024 16:41

Lyclear is rubbish.

Nothing much worked for us. We got something prescribed by a gp with different ingredients...worked a charm. But you must repeat it 7 days later or its a waste of time.

Beautiful3 · 04/04/2024 16:46

Vamousse is fab as a one time treatment. Also add a whole bottle of tea tree oil in the family shampoo, it will kill any new ones. Get everyone to leave the shampoo on the hair for a good 10 minutes, before rinising out.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 04/04/2024 17:03

This sounds awful, my mum used to always put a tiny bit of vinegar in our hair as kids as kept the nits away.

Applescruffle · 04/04/2024 17:08

I can't be the only one that's been itching like mad since reading this?

TotoroElla · 04/04/2024 17:11

Straighteners won't get rid of the eggs not even sure they'll do anything to the lice. They're hardy little buggers!

Pixiesgirl · 04/04/2024 17:23

Hair dye seemed to work when Ds2 had them (he was in year 8 and absolutely riddled because I had forgotten they existed Blush])

Pixiesgirl · 04/04/2024 17:24

For me I mean, I didn't give Ds2 a dye job haha.

YaMuvva · 04/04/2024 17:26

It won’t work, lice and eggs are too sticky. It will be like when you try a hoover up a sticker that’s on the floor and it won’t budge

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/04/2024 17:27

I used to buy the ivermectin tablets from an online pharmacy when I was desperate. Think they're not licensed here but think they use them commonly in the USA. We're still all alive and they work well. I use liquid ivermectin on the chickens when they had lice but did decide against dosing the kids with that :)
