To be terrified I'll lose my license

I have a clean driving license. Driving for over 40 years with no incidents. Like many others I sometimes go over the limit on motorways if I consider it safe to do so....
I was travelling back from Manchester airport on the m62 during the early hours of this morning. Almost empty motorway. Doing about 80mph average I would say. Occasionally crept to 85. I noticed a camera flash on the gantry. No limits were lit up. I assumed it was from the other side and carried on. Several miles later it did it again and yes for a 3rd time which is when I thought this is too much of a coincidence it must be me! I've just woken and have that sick feeling. The only defence I can offer is motorway was empty, it was between 4 - 5 am this happened and I do not think I was driving dangerously. I just wanted to get home to bed after a late night flight. What will be the penalty for this?

I am sure you have to receive it within 14 days…. Unless it is a lease car in which case they will have sent it to the company who will then have named you

Mine (New Ford Kuga) has an "intelligent speed limiter". From the user manual:

Intelligent speed limiter is a driving aid that limits the vehicle speed to the maximum speed limit detected by the speed sign recognition system.

I have no idea whether it works as I've had no need to use it.

Edited

Thank you, I dont believe its on cruise control but on the "limiter" as you said.

And rightly so, that you don't use it as manuals state these systems can mis-read, or read another sign on a corner, so it is your responsibility

on one of the cars we have I've noted at slower speeds and where there is a speed sigh on the corner of side roads and the main road is curved there, the car can read the speed on the corner and flash it up up the screen

The driver is the captain of the car and that is where the buck stops

I read it has to be processed within 14 days - they are not send via recorded delivery I read so it must be the processing time - there were also postal strikes

We went to Cambridge yesterday and since getting a speeding fine there a couple of years ago I am ultra cautious. Dh was driving and we were going through a small town. He knew it was 20 but I saw his speed creeping up and whilst we were still in the town but on the outward straight his speed has crept up to 30 ( still in 20 zone). I mentioned it to him and he kept going on that I should take the make and licence plate of the car in front as he was going faster! What an idiot! He has 4 speeding fines in the last 20 years and is in his 60s.

Never had one as always very careful but never say never as even good drivers can get caught out in new places especially on dark, rainy days

I got it through yesterday! Just got to confirm who was driving. 82mph in 70. Not sure yet what the penalty will be. I've bloody learnt my lesson though. I have now started setting cruise control which is what I should have always done. I guess it takes a panic like this to make changes.

£100 and 3 points. Just make sure you tell your insurance 😇

BarbarasRhabarberBar · 27/04/2024 21:40

Everyone who has mentioned the speed sign recognition should be careful. It's not always accurate. For example, if it's a lower limit for roadworks or similar, the car will recognise it but revert back to the registered limit for the road if there isn't a repeater sign within whatever distance.

They're also just incorrect sometimes for the sake of it. A few months back I was on a dual carriageway in the UK and it said the limit was 90!

Newer cars are definitely better than when they first came out. I had a 17 plate qashqai that was wrong more than it was right.

Most likely won’t even be that.

BarbarasRhabarberBar · 27/04/2024 23:23

@Shade17 definitely interested to find out. You could well be right if the starting point is 79.

@PepsiMaxx0 can you not do it online? The last speeding ticket (is it a NIP?) I had came with a web page where I could see the images, say it was me and receive my punishment all in one go.

As has been posted multiple times this thread already, the threshold is up to 86 for MAC, if eligible, otherwise FP of £100 and 3 points if not eligible.

There is no other scenario for sub-86mph in a 70mph, assuming not already on 9+ points.
