To be terrified I'll lose my license

PepsiMaxx0 · 04/04/2024 10:15

I have a clean driving license. Driving for over 40 years with no incidents. Like many others I sometimes go over the limit on motorways if I consider it safe to do so....
I was travelling back from Manchester airport on the m62 during the early hours of this morning. Almost empty motorway. Doing about 80mph average I would say. Occasionally crept to 85. I noticed a camera flash on the gantry. No limits were lit up. I assumed it was from the other side and carried on. Several miles later it did it again and yes for a 3rd time which is when I thought this is too much of a coincidence it must be me! I've just woken and have that sick feeling. The only defence I can offer is motorway was empty, it was between 4 - 5 am this happened and I do not think I was driving dangerously. I just wanted to get home to bed after a late night flight. What will be the penalty for this?

@SoupDragon My DC have been back a week now

Manthide · 13/04/2024 07:21

We went to Cambridge yesterday and since getting a speeding fine there a couple of years ago I am ultra cautious. Dh was driving and we were going through a small town. He knew it was 20 but I saw his speed creeping up and whilst we were still in the town but on the outward straight his speed has crept up to 30 ( still in 20 zone). I mentioned it to him and he kept going on that I should take the make and licence plate of the car in front as he was going faster! What an idiot! He has 4 speeding fines in the last 20 years and is in his 60s.

Good for them.

Mine doesn't go back til Tuesday.

And it's been a very, very long time since I've had to go back to school.

Balloonhearts · 13/04/2024 09:26

Your reasons don't matter. They won't be considered a defence. I wouldn't even bother arguing it tbh. I'm not judging you. I speed like a demon when it's an empty motorway but if I get caught I'm banged to rights, I have no excuse.

If its the stretch I'm thinking it is, you're absolutely fucked because the limit down there is 50 whether the gantry is on or not. 85 in a 50 you'll be banned.

If it was a 70 road you're looking 9 points and a massive fine.

Shade17 · 13/04/2024 19:12

It wouldn’t be a massive fine

CFbillsplitter · 27/04/2024 09:13

Well @PepsiMaxx0? You should have heard by now?

Balloonhearts · 27/04/2024 09:15

Depends how much you earn. Up to 2500 is pretty massive for someone on minimum wage.

She’s probably in jail by now 😞

PepsiMaxx0 · 27/04/2024 12:34

I got it through yesterday! Just got to confirm who was driving. 82mph in 70. Not sure yet what the penalty will be. I've bloody learnt my lesson though. I have now started setting cruise control which is what I should have always done. I guess it takes a panic like this to make changes.

CFbillsplitter · 27/04/2024 12:36

@PepsiMaxx0 Does it refer to the number of offences?

WibblyWobblyWeeble · 27/04/2024 12:38

I got £100 fine and 3 points for doing 54 in a 40, also on a motorway in the early hours.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 27/04/2024 12:40

That is a very long time three weeks.
I thought there was a two week limit (or is it a hire/leased car)
I get OCD when driving so get anxious for two weeks after a long trip just in case I have done something wrong have to increase to three now

I assume just 1. Between junctions 19 and 20.

If just the one may be lucky with 3p and £100 fine

It’s low enough for a course so you should escape points.

Caution advised. Setting your "cruise control" does NOT adapt to changes of speed and that is indeed a fact

We have what many perceive to be "nice cars." They have adaptive cruise control but even they don't read the speed for us.

What you can do OP is, look out for the speed and use your 'speed limiter' if you have one in you car - all of ours do

HTH

Mine does, including variable speed limits on overhead gantries, smart motorways etc.

parkrun500club · 27/04/2024 15:23

Why on earth would you do 85 in a 70 limit>

75 maybe. Maybe even 80 at a push.

But you never ever go more than 10 over the speed limit if you want to keep your licence.

I hope you do get a lot of points. And I hope you are a LOT more careful in future. I am surprised it only warrants a speed awareness course according to a pp - if everyone does 82 when they are meant to be doing 70, that makes people actually doing 70 (or 65) feel like they are going far too slowly.

I am not being sanctimonious - everyone speeds at some point - yes everyone. But not when cameras are flashing and not that much over.

Doubt it very much - name the marque/model and year

ours display the roadside and gantry speeds but the the cruise that is ADAPTIVE doe NOT adjust to speed signs and that is a fact

Thank you, very valid post. People need to be alert and as the adverts state, 'speed kills.'

Wishiwascrafty · 27/04/2024 15:59

There were so many self important sanctimonious arseholes on this thread I don’t think I’ve ever wanted someone to be let off an offense so much in my life.

Have you never been on a motorway? People drive at over 80 all the time, it's the least surprising thing on the moforway

Mine (New Ford Kuga) has an "intelligent speed limiter". From the user manual:

Intelligent speed limiter is a driving aid that limits the vehicle speed to the maximum speed limit detected by the speed sign recognition system.

I have no idea whether it works as I've had no need to use it.
