To be terrified I'll lose my license

PepsiMaxx0 · 04/04/2024 10:15

I have a clean driving license. Driving for over 40 years with no incidents. Like many others I sometimes go over the limit on motorways if I consider it safe to do so....
I was travelling back from Manchester airport on the m62 during the early hours of this morning. Almost empty motorway. Doing about 80mph average I would say. Occasionally crept to 85. I noticed a camera flash on the gantry. No limits were lit up. I assumed it was from the other side and carried on. Several miles later it did it again and yes for a 3rd time which is when I thought this is too much of a coincidence it must be me! I've just woken and have that sick feeling. The only defence I can offer is motorway was empty, it was between 4 - 5 am this happened and I do not think I was driving dangerously. I just wanted to get home to bed after a late night flight. What will be the penalty for this?

  1. I never said he was a motoring solicitor, just a solicitor - lots of specialisms out there
  2. He didn’t advIse going to court, but to see a solicitor for advice
  3. The rest was information

I suppose it depends how concerned the OP is about the number of points and fines.

the OP asked for some advice on what people thought, that’s what I posted, just I asked someone who has years of experience with road traffic offences for his thoughts.

The OP is not obligated to take any advice posted, but considering the barrage of abuse she received I thought I would try and actually offer something worthwhile.

How she chooses to proceed is her choice, personally if u could avoid getting increased points I would.

You also said she needs to talk to a solicitor, if she gets 3 charges that is exactly what she needs to do.

The pedantry and argument picking on this site is really tedious.

It's ok, the speed limit only applies to people who don't want to get back to bed.

This 😂 I cannot believe they used this to justify speeding 🤣

Did it flash in front of you, or from behind you?

Behind every time

I would love to say you will loose your license but you will get 9 points and i really hope your insurance goes through the roof.

She's not going to "loose" her license, or lose her licence either.

It wasn't quite like that....alot more to it and I'm not prepared to share personal info on here why I was desperate to get home.
I fully hold my hands up, I drove too fast, I broke the law, I will and deserve to be punished. Am I sorry? Yes. Will I be more careful in future? Yes. Do I regret the way I drove? Yes.

But you must know that none of that is justified? That regardless, you cannot speed and endanger others? No matter what the emergency at home was? You still have to obey the law to protect other road users?

Ilovemyshed · 04/04/2024 11:08

There is no defence here OP, you were speeding and may or may not have been caught. You may or may not be prosecuted.

Sit tight and wait and hope, and slow down.

I don't know ANYONE who hasn't broken a speed limit now and again so ignore the haters though

Also bear in mind that your speedo usually reads a little high on the actual speed you are doing by a couple of mph.

That’s a myth.

BarbarasRhabarberBar · 07/04/2024 02:52

@WoodingtonMo the speedo comment isn't a myth. Each manufacturer has them out by a specific amount and it doesn't happen by accident. There was an article in fleet news many years ago that showed the actual speed vs the recorded speed on the speedometer but I can never find it.

"To ensure that they comply with the law and make sure that their speedometers are never showing less than true speed under any foreseeable circumstances, car manufacturers will normally deliberately calibrate their speedos to read ‘high’ by a certain amount." www.thecarexpert.co.uk/how-accurate-is-a-car-speedometer/#:~:text=A%20speedo%20must%20never%20show,of%20actual%20speed%20%2B%206.25mph.

Griff1963 · 07/04/2024 05:09

My speedo shows that I'm travelling 3 mph faster than I actually am.

threedotsatthetop · 07/04/2024 08:25

These kinds of threads always make me smile - they bring out all the Victorians who have an attack of the self righteous vapours at someone else speeding when they know they too have at some point broken the speed limit. 😂

I'm very pragmatic about these things. In general, speeding is a bad idea and in built-up areas it is an absolute no no. However at some point on an empty motorway, most of us will have done it (yes, even the 'Victorians', see above) and once you notice you're doing it, just don't do it again. Do you have a speed limiter/cruise control on your car? I always put mine on, particularly on open stretches of motorway.

I am not a legal person but I would think it unlikely you'd get your licence taken off you for something like this. I regularly do that stretch of the m62 and have noticed the lights on the gantry before but I am not sure if they are actually speed cameras or not.

The main thing is, you've given yourself a fright and from this point, you won't do it again.

WoodingtonMo · 06/04/2024 22:45

You are entirely uninformed. And very confident. I wonder why.

Definitelynotem · 06/04/2024 12:31

People saying that OP deserves to lose her license are bonkers, yes speeding is illegal and the OP shouldn’t have done it but this is a one off offence on a quiet motorway ffs. I’m sure OP will pay the fine and learn the lesson but if everyone were to get a ban for a similar offence there’d be no one on the road.

Exactly this! I do not believe that all those handing out abuse on this thread, have always perfectly stayed within the speed limit their entire driving history. It's just people being self righteous keyboard warriors. There's a lot of them around sadly.

SoupDragon · 07/04/2024 08:48

WoodingtonMo · 06/04/2024 22:45

That’s a myth.

Either my speedo reads consistently high or the one on my SatNav reads consistently low. All the ones on the roadside that flash up your speed also read consistently low too.

I noticed during lockdown there were so many people driving like they thought they were the only ones on the road.
pulling out and moving lanes without looking
Getting REALLY annoyed at getting caught behind someone doing the speed limit like speeding was their little bit of daily fun.

Yes - I’ve seen plenty of this, women as well as men. My speedo seems to be set higher according to Waze so if I get one of these idiots behind me in eg a 30 zone I slow down to the speedo 30 which is probably 28.

It’s a form of bullying to drive right up behind someone trying to harass them into speeding up.

OP you need to slow down. I’ve got friends who’ve been stopped for 79/80 on more or less empty motorways.

BarbarasRhabarberBar · 07/04/2024 09:32

@kitsuneghost the still do drive like that!

I was driving up the m1 this morning in lane 3 overtaking a van in lane 2 who was overtaking a lorry in lane 1(the van had been in lane2 for miles but that's by the by) and some absolute fuck pig in a disco came up behind me flashing. Where does he expect me to go? I have cars to the left of me and I will move over when safe to do so.

I live in a seaside town, dropped GS off at his job in a holiday park this morning. I have to drive about half a mile to a mile down a narrow road and due to parking two cars can't pass each other so you are constantly pulling in to gaps between cars so cars coming the other way can pass you, sometimes they pull in for you to pass. To add to the fun the road has sharp bends about every 100 yds (well I think 100 yds). This morning I had a car behind me, right up my backside flashing his lights at me. This is crazy as a. you can't drive fast as you can't see what's coming round the corner and b. if you travel in convoys it causes chaos as no one can pull into spaces so you end up with a stand off with no one able to move. I just don't understand what they think they are achieving and yes they are idiots.

Yes - unbelievably stupid idiots. What on earth do they expect people to do?

The level of entitlement they display is incredible. When I was a newbie driver it unnerved me - not any more.

Maray1967 · 07/04/2024 11:15

I should add - I don’t do anything stupid like sharp braking - I would never try to cause an accident. I just sit at or just below the limit and motor on.

I really hope all you self-righteous, cat's-bum-mouthed, pant-hoikers are checking your tyres, etc., for damage, at least weekly.

A blowout is far, far more dangerous than being slightly over the limit on the motorway in good weather.

Well now, you'll probably get points, hopefully. Next time you go over the silly speed limit, I hope you get caught, because it's not meant for you is it?

Speed kills. Fact

BarbarasRhabarberBar · 07/04/2024 13:32

I agree with you @SofiaSoFar but I think you've missed the point @oprahwindsock. Speed kills (not in and of itself usually) but so do dodgy tyres and all the other dangerous things people do. No one checks their car is in a roadworthy condition each time they get in - that could cause an issue if you have a bulge in your tyre that you didn't spot.
