Is bleeding after a smear test normal?

I had a smear test today. It was my third attempt - I have a tilted cervix and my first two failed. The first time, the thing broke inside me as she was trying to locate the cervix and it was agony.

Today I was seen by a specialist who made it easier. It was agony and I was swearing as she did it, haha. But I finally got it done. She said a bit of spotting is normal.

But, (sorry for the detail), when I wipe it’s just like I’m on my period. I’m feeling a bit crampy too.

Is this normal and should I be concerned?

Was there any mention of cervical ectopy/cervical erosion?
It basically means instead of skin cells like the outside of your body, the endometrial cells grow through the cervical opening and cover the outer cervix, which break down and bleed after a smear, bumped during sex etc.
Even so, it shouldn't be like a period volume, so i'd call your GP in the morning, or 111 if it gets any worse overnight, or if you're really worried.

No mention of that @AlmostAJillSandwich ! She did say my uterus lining was quite thin (I think?) and so it was probably easily irritated. I’ve never bled after sex so hopefully no issues

I sometimes get a little cramp and a little bleeding after a smear test- it's only a small amount and only lasts a few hours. I'd get seen either via GP or 111 if there's a heavy volume or it hasn't resolved by tomorrow morning

I'm sorry to hear your first couple of smears were so bad- definitely insist on booking in the specialist next time now you know about your irregular anatomy

A little bit of bleeding/spotting is very normal after a smear test ime

I was a bit crampy and bled a little after my last one.

Yes I've had slight bleeding and mild crampling following a smear. Was advised to take paracetomol. It's not unusual so I wouldn't be too concerned unless it goes on for a few days.

My womb tilts backwards and I've always bled after a smear. The only exception was the last time I went when I told the nurse about it and she asked me to get in a slightly different position. Hands under my bum a think? Anyway- no bleeding at all that time. In the past I've had to go to the hospital and all sorts because they couldn't get what they wanted

Sorry - to add - spotting for a day or so. Bleeding when wiping is ok but it shouldn't be coming out like a period. Are you having to wear pads? If so and it's more than a day I'd be going back
