to think McDonald's have lost the main idea of "fast food"

It's not even fast anymore. It takes at least 15 minutes on a good day to get food, and on a bad day even longer. The drive-thru is even worse, I was in there last weekend and there were three cars in front of me and took half an hour to get my food and go.

I haven't even seen McDonald's do anything particularly creative recently. They're just bringing back old things and the food really doesn't look anything like in there adverts (which we established years ago)

And don't start about the new Happy Meal toys!!!

McDonald's is basically where fast food started, and now I think it's lost it a bit.

Fast food has been around since the first fish and chip shops in the 1860s. One of the Ramsdens chain (opened in 1928) in Yorkshire is in the guinness book of records for serving over 10k portions of fish and chips in one day in 1952.

Drive thru you are referring to.

We used to go regularly but give it a miss now because of their free food for Israeli soldiers thing. No way am I going to support a company (even a franchise) that thought they’d just help with the slaughter of Palestinians. Sometimes one thing is just not ok for you.

But you can't really do anything with the new paper ones. Most of the time they just get chucked in the bin.

I seem to recall around 12/13 years ago McDonald's doing a set of toys that played different pop songs.

No comment on the food, but wanting more plastic tat is madness. Whatever our generation think about it, we've really got to encourage the next generation to do better than us.

McDonalds have got that bit right at least.

They made 15 billion dollars in 2023. Their shareholders are no doubt grateful for your meek acceptance of poor service.

It’s cooked to order now instead.

do they still call themselves fast food?

No, not "cooked" to order, it's "assembled" to order.

The burger patty's are pre-cooked and sat in trays until the order comes in and then someone assembles them, accordingly to customisations (if any).

So it's quite possible to have a "freshly assembled" Big Mac where the beef patty has been sat for quite a while in a warm tray.

when we went to McDonald’s head office for the mumsnet day it was just after they changed it and they definitely said it was all cooked to order.
perhaps they’ve had to change again?

Really? The meals must be completely cold when they get to Israel. I didn’t know Deliveroo went that far TBH.

Do you understand how franchises work?

Do you understand how franchises work?

Do you? The franchisees giving out free food to the IDF are not the same people who own the branch in Hemel Hempstead.

Davros · 02/04/2024 13:25

God, I fancy a Big Mac and jumbo Coke Zero now...

cantbesilenced · 02/04/2024 13:25

The prices are now on par with proper restaurants. I personally boycott it due to the links with Israel.

whynotwhatknot · 02/04/2024 13:26

i would say its because of delieries but i waited over an our for mine wit uber eats last week

ManchesterLu · 02/04/2024 13:27

I literally don't believe it takes that long to give you your food. You're exaggerating. Although I do agree it takes longer than it did - we're always asked to go and park up after ordering at the drive thru, however it's 5 mins max, and I'm sure yours is too.

Yup I really do. That’s why I mentioned I was aware they were franchises in my original post. We can all vote with our feet as we choose. It’s not a particularly unusual stance. Most people who object to the slaughter in Palestine that I know don’t eat there any more. Other restaurants are available and other reasons for not eating there are fine.

Hoplolly · 02/04/2024 13:35

Never understood who would want to deliveroo McDonald's. These days you have shit loads of actual good burger places to get burgers delivered from

That's nice, if you live in a town. I live semi-rural, not even far out of a town and hardly anywhere delivers. McDonalds via Uber Eats is the only one that delivers burgers.

TeenLifeMum · 02/04/2024 13:44

@Davros i know right?! I rarely have McDonald’s but now I want a banana milkshake 😩

Grumblevision · 02/04/2024 13:44

Yeah. Crap. We went to one on the weekend (travelling a lot) and they had a 'frequently ordered' meal option displayed at the bottom; chicken selects, salad, water. I asked for it and the girl got so confused she just stepped away and a bloke took over. He had no idea either. Gave up, asked for fries, and specifically asked for sauce or they're too dry. No sauce. Ended up at a Tesco garage instead. I think it's shite but like prev poster said, husband and kid like it and kid is very hard to get food for when we're away from home. Whenever husband suggests it as takeaway I roll my eyes, a macca is not a bloody takeaway. It's a last resort.

Georgethecat1 · 02/04/2024 13:44

Our local McDonald’s don’t charge for dips, they are super fast (longest I have waited is 5mins as we order bespoke burgers with no onions etc) and I love the new happy meal toys (we got uno cards yesterday)

PolarPandaBear · 02/04/2024 13:51

Took half an hour in ours the other day because they prioritise the Uber drivers

Grumblevision · 02/04/2024 13:52

alrightjackie · 02/04/2024 12:41

I miss the BK halloumi burger...

I miss BK's spicy bean burger. That thing was the tits.

Lovethistimeofyear · 02/04/2024 13:53

I think it’s because they prioritise the orders for delivery.

I agree it’s much slower now. However, on the whole our local ones serve hot food that’s fairly decent (within the context of McDonalds!) They do often get our order wrong though!!!

Grumblevision · 02/04/2024 13:54

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 02/04/2024 12:26

You live in SE London, don't you.

The same at our local one.

Been to several in the North, at home and seeing family, they're all like this. And there are never any bloody milkshakes.

Poostickers · 02/04/2024 13:56

Last time we were in the UK we pissed ourselves laughing at the so called happy meal. A shitty little bag of fruit and a paper toy. Jeez, it's not exactly a treat is it. We still get good old fashioned plastic toys here

Hoplolly · 02/04/2024 13:57

It's because sometimes they are too lazy to clean the machine.

Hoplolly · 02/04/2024 10:53

And the Happy Meal toys used to be elite. They are completely naff now. I hear the landfill comments but lots didn't end up in landfill, they used to be real collectibles.

My MIL has a few from when her 2 older grandchildren, now mid teens, were small. My son 1.5 plays with them.

I must be lucky I don't live anywhere near a McDonalds but it's never been slow like ye are saying when I have been. I haven't been in about 3 months though, I think I waited about 5 mins for a tenders meal.
