Would you find this strange - holidays

Wearenottheonlyones · 01/04/2024 14:39

This is a bit of a strange question but I would like to know what's normal for most people.

Can you remember the places you've been on holiday as an adult? So for example if you've been to a certain resort in Corfu, can you at least remember that you've been to Corfu, a little.bit about the holiday such as whether the hotel was nice, the beach, few things you did there, and know that Corfu is a Greek Island.

Or does it just completely fall out of your brain once you're home?

I have a good memory, and I remember very holiday I’ve ever been on. Usually the name of the resort although not the hotel. Places we ate at (not the names but the type of place). Trips we went on and roughly when it was. Multiple trips to the same country sometimes merge into one but I’d always remember which country I’ve been to!

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 01/04/2024 14:44

Gone, out my brain

Used to drive Exhusband mad as I couldn't remember going places. We would go back and he would say, remember you had an ice cream sat on that bench...and I would just shrug and say nope

TeenLifeMum · 01/04/2024 14:45

I remember but not necessarily the hotel name. I can visualise it though.

TheSnowyOwl · 01/04/2024 14:45

Holidays, I think yes. However, I spent a year backpacking around the world and a lot of that is a blur (I was sober) and I feel now that a couple of decades later, I would struggle to tell you much about many of the places I went (although some are very vividly in my mind).

IamSmarticus · 01/04/2024 14:47

I remember everything and everywhere I've been. Sometimes not 100% sure of the name of the hotel but I can definitely remember which countries and resorts I habe been to.

Mummyratbag · 01/04/2024 14:48

We took the kids to a resort on the south coast took me several days to remember we had stayed in the same place before (chalet cabins type place)..

alphabettispagetti · 01/04/2024 14:49

Not necessarily. But then I don't always know where I'm going on holiday in the first place! I will know what we're going to do there but don't particularly care which ski resort/sunny beach resort/sailing destination we're going to so can happily leave it to friends or DH to sort.
If we're doing a more exploring type holiday, then I will be all over the planning & be able to recall it in detail (to the extent that I can probably give directions on how to get from one place to the next.

KeepingItUnderTheRadar · 01/04/2024 14:49

Anything abroad, yes. We travel abroad every year but they're 'big' holidays - planned and researched lots and infrequent enough that all the details stick in my mind.

UK based, no. In the 16 years we've been parents we've been to dozens of various camp sites, caravans, camping pods, cottages, Premier Inns, City centre flats - both with dc and sometimes without. We travel in the UK a lot for up to a week at a time and there are just too many. The details after a while merge and we remember bits - like a particular lovely restaurant/museum/evening show/cottage or whatever - but we have no idea of where this happened or when!

That's my dh. His memory is terrible anyway.

He says he can't remember anywhere we've been. Not even the country or the resort or a few small details about it.

Doesn't know where anywhere is in the world either.

I always remember them! Sights, smells, the little old man in Corfu waiting for passers by to come and then playing his tiny little banjo 😂

Wearenottheonlyones · 01/04/2024 14:54

I can always remember the country, the resort, maybe not the name of the hotel but I can remember what it was like.

I don't know if dh has got a terrible memory or if mine is just very sharp.

That's not my experience, nor that of anyone I know. Is he like that with everything? Has he had a head injury, becausethat sounds quite strange?

He can be like this with a lot of things and to be honest, I might just be an impatient sod but I'm finding him increasingly infuriating.

I'd say it's very strange not to be able to remember anything at all.

I can remember every holiday, where we went (I don't always remember the name of the hotel, or the exact address of every villa/cottage, but I remember which area they were in), and quite a few details of each trip but I wouldn't necessarily expect someone else on that same trip to remember the same level of detail. I would expect them to remember we'd been there though!

useitorlose · 01/04/2024 15:09

If I'm not sure, I check my Trip Advisor review contributions!

Nellieinthebarn · 01/04/2024 16:52

I remember every holiday aboard in detail, but there have only been 5 of them in my life, so they are stand out events.

I remember quite a bit about our UK holidays. As its me who chooses, organises and books them all, I think they would stick in my mind a lot more than DH who really just comes with me on my holiday. And we are both fine with that.

Bobbotgegrinch · 01/04/2024 16:59

Is he aphantasic?

It means that you can't picture anything in your head. I am, and didn't realise for a long time that people were being literal when they say they can see things in their mind!

It means that I forget details of things very quickly, so would really struggle to tell you what the hotel resort I went to looked like for instance. Couple that with normal forgetting of stuff like not being able to remember the name of the resort etc, and I'd imagine it could be quite annoying for other people!

Dacadactyl · 01/04/2024 17:01

After a year or so it COMPLETELY falls out of my mind.

There are some places I've visited that I couldn't tell you the first thing about now. It worries me actually. Particularly when I listen to my extremely well travelled MIL (who goes on holiday abroad once a month) recounting her holidays from 30 years ago, down to the resort, what they did each day, places of interest etc.

Gawd you are like me. I can watch a film or read a book and 3/4 through I'll think 'haaaanngggg on a minute. I've seen this'

Capmagturk · 01/04/2024 17:24

I remember them all.

Mummyratbag · 01/04/2024 17:25

@underthemilky that too lol !

Caroparo52 · 01/04/2024 17:25

If I do lots of research for the holiday then yes I remember a lot. I recognise places I've been to in the UK by the brickwork and architecture (strangely)

Pomegranatecarnage · 01/04/2024 17:30

I remember all of my holidays, and although I may not remember the actual name of the hotel I can picture it and remember where we went.
I would say it’s unusual not to know where countries are, it suggests that your DH can’t visualise anything (aphantasia).

StamppotAndGravy · 01/04/2024 17:45

Surely all resorts look more or less the same though? Campsites, business & luxury hotels and ski chalets tend to blur for me, unless something went wrong. Hostels, houses and quirky hotels stand out a bit more, but I'm more likely to spend time there rather than just sleep

OccasionalHope · 01/04/2024 17:49

I wonder if those who don’t remember much are the ones who tend to drink heavily while there….
