Would you find this strange - holidays

This is a bit of a strange question but I would like to know what's normal for most people.

Can you remember the places you've been on holiday as an adult? So for example if you've been to a certain resort in Corfu, can you at least remember that you've been to Corfu, a little.bit about the holiday such as whether the hotel was nice, the beach, few things you did there, and know that Corfu is a Greek Island.

Or does it just completely fall out of your brain once you're home?

Can remember every detail of holidays here and abroad since I was 18 which is 48 years ago.
DH barely remembers anything. They all blur into one for him but then he really doesn't like holidays and I appreciate the fact that he will go wherever I want within a 4 hour flight.
My sister is worse than DH. She will tell me about her holiday but never knows the name of the hotel or the restaurant she is recommending.

Wearenottheonlyones · 01/04/2024 18:12

I guess some people remember and others just don't.

He hasn't been drinking on the holidays so it's definitely not that. Could be that he can't visualise. He's got a shocking memory I know that much.

It means that I end up having to research and arrange all of the holidays. I was even showing our son some of the places we'd been when he was a toddler, YouTube videos of the resorts and dh was blank.

It's funny a pp said about places looking the same because I disagree with this a lot but that's something my husband would say. I think that I notice more detail and get a feeling from places more.

Yes I remember most of it
As some of them get longer ago and there are more to remember I may get some of the detail muddled....we used to go to a different Greek island each year, or a different resort on the same island so I may get confused between a week in zante and a week in Kos 20 years ago.

Does your OH book? Or have any involvement in the decision or just turn up?
I usually book but OH has a better memory for events typically. We both tend to research before we go, even though we don't often venture far from the resort.

I inter-railed europe 25yrs ago and I can still remember which people I met in which places but the eastern cities may get muddled slightly, the Scandinavian, etc because they are more similar and there were some of the same people

lavenderlou · 01/04/2024 18:15

Yes, I remember lots of details about holidays, including ones I went on as a child (names of places stayed, name of accommodation etc).

Isseywith3witchycats · 01/04/2024 18:23

like some people on here i remember where we went and what the resort was like , little things that happened on holiday places we went to but not always the hotel name but remember what the hotel was like as we do different holidays some have been UK and some have been overseas, but we try to find a different venue each year

Tara336 · 01/04/2024 18:23

I struggle to remember where I'm going sometimes, first time it happened was at the airport I couldn't remember the island I was going too when someone asked so I just said the Caribbean when they asked where I said the first island that came in my head as I just couldn't remember and I put it down to being tired. But then I spent months before a holiday saying I was going to Zakynthos...I was actually going to Kos.

I can only remember the names of hotels I stayed in when I went to New York. I cant remember resort names or places I visited when there unless I see something that triggers a memory on TV sometimes.

DSD9472 · 01/04/2024 18:25

I remember them- often in great detail!

I was fortunate to travel/live abroad as a child and can recall details of parts of holidays starting when I was 4. As as adult, if I didn't know the name of the hotel, I could easily find it on a map, recall the local restaurant name (for example) and clearly see the place in my head.

DH is the complete opposite. He claims he cannot recall many things from childhood, let alone holidays. We moved house 3yrs ago and when he drives, he still asks for directions to supermarkets we have been to 100 times. He would find his way there without me, but would likely go an obscure, round about way or need the sat nav on.

Why do you think that is? Is it poor memory, or because it's been arranged by someone else, or stress. Genuinely?

Dh is the same he can't remember where he's going he does worry about getting lost which I always find amusing but perhaps it's genuine.

for anything to be put into long term memory ut needs to be rethought, so I purposefully go over memories in my head I want to keep. Got married recently and I will take time to go through my memories of the day so I don't forget them, do the same for holidays

BobbyBiscuits · 01/04/2024 18:35

I remember quite a lot of detail about shorter holidays, many years later. I found when I spent months travelling it all blended into one and I struggled to describe anywhere geographically etc that accurately. I love looking at maps of places after ice been there, rather than before for some reason.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 01/04/2024 18:35

I remember a lot if I stop and think but not on a day to day basis.

SkaneTos · 01/04/2024 18:35

Yes, I can remember my holidays and travels.
They are precious memories to me.

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/04/2024 18:37

Smaller details disappear, but generally yes.

I can remember almost every hotel but that's probably because hotels are my thing and I generally spend a long time researching before we book.

I'd say I remember holidays with DH better than those on my own before I met him, as we'll often say 'remember that time in...' or 'this hotel breakfast isn't as good as the one in...'

I wonder if those who don’t remember much are the ones who tend to drink heavily while there….

Nope.

Billoddiesbeard · 01/04/2024 18:38

I remember all our holidays, countries, resorts and sometimes even hotel names........DH on the other hand..... nothing!! To the point of denying we've even visited certain resorts 🤦‍♀️

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/04/2024 18:39

I remember every holiday I've ever been on over my 54 years and I've been lucky enough to have gone on loads all over the world and here in the Uk. May not remember the name of every hotel I've stayed in but will have a memory of every place I've been to.

Awrite · 01/04/2024 18:39

Yes, I remember every holiday. I even have glimpses of going on holiday when I was either 2 or 4 or both. Same place.

My dh has a terrible memory but remembers his holidays and his travels surprisingly well.

I first went abroad 60+ years ago. I still remember bits from then, And I think, every other holiday I've been on.
But I do have a very good memory of other things from childhood too

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/04/2024 18:40

That said, I don't think anybody remembers anything as thoroughly as my Mum who will suddenly pipe up with 'Do you remember that restaurant by the hotel in Salou in 1998, I had the fish and you had your first Fanta Limon and the waiter was called Eduardo'.

Erm... No Mum. It's both fascinating and really tiresome.

Lesina · 01/04/2024 18:41

Oh yes I remember it all :) I love my holidays. Soak them up and remember them :)

Ponderingwindow · 01/04/2024 18:41

Sometimes I might forget the name of a specific restaurant, but I remember most of the details of my life fairly well.

Even with something like a restaurant or a shop I went in once, I typically remember enough details that if it still exists or at least has a digital footprint, I can find it online. I’ve done this a few times when I’m trying to remember an exact dish more specifically, gone and found an old restaurant and an old copy of its menu.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 01/04/2024 18:46

I remember most of my holidays and places I stayed, where I went what I did / see and eat as a general experience. But I think it's because I actually organised them so names of hotels or B&B's are kind of important.

I have done 3 organised round trip type holidays. While I remember what I saw and eat, plus the people I travelled with, I couldn't tell you the name of any of the hotels. I do however remember the location and would recognise the outside/ street if you took me there even just driving past...

muckymayhem · 01/04/2024 18:56

Most of them. I remember all the trips - I don't necessarily remember all the hotels I've only stayed in for one or two nights unless it was particularly stand out or a destination type place in its own right.

Amsterdam for instance. I remember going there. I remember a lot about the weekend, but where I stayed? Nope - I can only assume it's because it was the least interesting thing about the trip! (And it was 30 years ago)

SunnySunnySunny · 01/04/2024 18:59

I don’t always remember the exact whole name or the name of the resort/town etc (I do go away a lot) but I’ll remember the country and something like that was the place where we had the massive paella etc.

Tara336 · 01/04/2024 19:06

@OccasionalHope I don't drink
