I’m sorry you have lost me. What does it matter if you wash them a day or a week later if no one else is sleeping in them in between time then? It’s still the same amount of water used. You’re not more eco friendly if you wait a week.

Er, guest leaves strips bed = mess and immediate washing forced plus new sheets on.

Guest leaves does not strip bed = sheets get changed at a more convenient and appropriate point.

Additional observation - it’s weird when guests to do any part of laundry preparation process unless in hotels or holiday cottages that request this.

Also, how cross would you be if your DCs started just stripping their beds and deciding when sheets got changed?

I'd be delighted!

What are all you filthy bints doing at night - rendering the sheets vomit worthy?

Do you sit on the same sofa as other people?
Worse - do you sit on the same toilet as other people?

What is it, exactly that makes the sheets of a once slept in bed so disgusting? Assuming the guest wasn't participating in a massive naked, body fluid filled orgy, I think it's ok to nap in a bed used by a family member.

The hysteria on this thread is bizarre and perhaps reflective of what some people do in their own beds - naked sleeping/sheet butt floss???

Haha! Damn right! Actually toilet seats are surely way more disgusting? Or even showers! A guests naked body may have touched a surface that doesn't get watered down! 🤯🤯🤯🤯

These helpful gestures can feel like passive aggressive digs

No way - “Mum, I’ve slept two nights in this, change it” eeek

Much better “Could you strip your bed for new sheets tonight?” “Yeah sure”

I’ve never ever stripped the bed after staying at someone’s house. I’ve never had anyone do it for me either. I suppose it depends on how long someone’s staying, but usually I wash the bedding before people stay over and if they were only there for a night or two I wouldn’t be too pleased about having to wash it again.

My MIL doesn't always change the sheets between guests which is why I always strip the sheets at her house and put them in the washing machine, nobody wants to sleep in someone elses dirty sheets.

RoseMartha · 31/03/2024 23:32

I would have stripped the bed also.

Rattatoille · 31/03/2024 23:34

Lighthearted.
Haven't read the full thread, just on page 1, but a previous poster says she likes the guest bed stripped, as touching used sheets is like touching other people's underwear, and mentioned that both her & hubby do not wear pjs. Well this gives me the ick, wouldn't be naked in someone's guest bed. People who sleep naked should be arrested for indecency!! Grin

Gingerbee · 31/03/2024 23:38

I dislike it too. I want to strip and wash the bedding and their towels at a convenient time for me. I don't want it lying around. .Hate how they bring it downstairs or pop in the washing basket.
I wouldn't want to wash it on Easter Sunday. It wasn't drying weather here today.
At least ask if you want the bed stripping!

pinkpirlie · 31/03/2024 23:43

With stayed with DP's friend last weekend and not only did I strip the bed, but I put the sheets in the washing machine and turned it on before we left.
I never even considered someone may find this rude, I thought I was being helpful and saving them a job.

KleeVanLeaf · 31/03/2024 23:45

It seems to me there are three things Mumsnetters absolutely cannot do:

  1. Spell the word "bear"
  2. Mind their own business
  3. Believe that towels, bedding, etc., that have been used once are not dirty
MustBeGinOclock · 31/03/2024 23:45

Sleeping in someone's used bed sheets. How unhygienic. Sister or not.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 31/03/2024 23:48

I’d only strip the bed if I’d had an accident of some kind, it wouldn’t even occur to me to do it otherwise. I wouldn’t expect a guest to strip the sheets after staying either. I didn’t know this was a thing tbh.

I’d find this annoying because I don’t have a tumble dryer so try and only wash sheets on a sunny day when I can hang them outside so I don’t have wet sheets hanging around the house. Obviously not always possible especially in winter but I would be very annoyed if a guest put a load of washing on without asking and then left me to deal with taking it out of the machine and drying it etc at a time that might not be convenient. My washing machine also takes 3-4 hours and I don’t like to leave the house with it running (I worry about fire risk) so would feel tied to the house if someone put the washing machine on and then left.

I do because I sleep naked and I thought it was what’s expected I learn something every day on MN

Woahthehorsey · 01/04/2024 00:04

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 31/03/2024 23:05

But surely if you had the choice you would nap in your own bed? The op is bypassing her own bed to sleep in the spare bed and it's that which is weird imo

No. I generally choose to nap in the spare bed - the mattress is comfier, the room darker and further away from the household noise. I love sleeping in the spare room when I get the option.

Maddy70 · 01/04/2024 00:13

Who gets into a dirty bed? Thats so wierd?

Its super helpful to strio the beds. Id love 8t if my guests did that

Purplestorm83 · 01/04/2024 00:17

Oh God, my sister gets annoyed if I forget to strip the bed - my autistic brain only just learnt that it’s a rule, don’t tell me that some people have the opposite rule?!? Could you neurotypicals please come up with a code so I know which rule applies? (Tongue in cheek but also not as this would make life easier!)

DSD9472 · 01/04/2024 00:20

@Purplestorm83 Just ask the host! 'Would you like me to strip the bed, or leave it as is?

Cyanobacterium · 01/04/2024 00:27

I think it's quite weird to strip the bed when you are visiting. It might not be convenient to the host for a number of reasons. They might not be wanting to wash it all straight away, in fact they might not be having more guests for weeks and will fit it into their laundry schedule later. They might not have anywhere convenient to put a whole bedful of linen in the meantime. You might also strip off too much or too little compared to what the owner wanted you to, too.

It's also not weird to want to nap on the outside of a bed that your own sister has slept in once, in a room you own, that you might like the aspect of. If that's what you want to do, because you are the owner of the bed! A lot of this thread is very weird though.

You’ve got to be joking. Sleeping in someone else’s bedsheets is rancid and my fear whenever I go and stay with someone

WrylyAmused · 01/04/2024 00:39

I reckon this thread is a perfect example of why it would be a wonderful thing if we all (and I absolutely include myself in this), asked other people what they would like instead of assuming that everyone likes it or does it (whatever "it" is) the way we do!

I'm definitely team "please don't strip the bed when you've stayed at mine", but it's definitely on my list to now ask in future what my hosts prefer when I'm a guest...

bradpittsbathwater · 01/04/2024 00:39

I'd find that gross to sleep on sheets a family member has sweated and drooled on.
