I’ve never ever stripped the bed after staying at someone’s house. I’ve never had anyone do it for me either. I suppose it depends on how long someone’s staying, but usually I wash the bedding before people stay over and if they were only there for a night or two I wouldn’t be too pleased about having to wash it again.

Thanks for this thread. I once stripped the bed at my best friends house and she was a bit horrified because her pillows had yellowish stains. Since then I haven't stripped any beds but of course having read this thread I now realise I should ask. I'm also a bit lazy so happy to let someone else strip the bed but I will definitely ask in future.

I mean it's not like my sister shat the bed, you know?

😂😂😂😂

I wouldn't consider sheets slept on once by my sister to be dirty. Unless she’d been in it with a partner. I’m with you op, for myself I probably wouldn’t change them in this scenario. For guests I would, because I have been on MN long enough to know horrified other people are by a hint of ‘dirt’.

Crabble · 31/03/2024 22:32

This thread just proves that you simply can’t win - it’s rude to strip the bed and also rude not to strip the bed!

I personally prefer people not to as I wash bedding the day before guests come so it smells nice and fresh, but I don’t get annoyed if people do strip the bed because I recognise they are well intentioned.

DSD9472 · 31/03/2024 22:32

I would only do so after asking the host- and majority have said 'No thanks, its fine. I'll do it later'. My MIL has a specific washing day, and wouldn't allow stripping of beds before that day for fear they'd look untidy!

If someone stripped it without asking me, I'd assume they'd stained it!

43ontherocksporfavor · 31/03/2024 22:34

I don’t strip the bed. I think that’s a bit personal. They might have a stained mattress or something that they don’t want me to see!😂

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 31/03/2024 22:34

Napping in someone else's used sheets, even your sisters, is weirder than stripping the bed. Honestly. People on here are really bloody strange sometimes 🙄

RosePombear · 31/03/2024 22:35

Sunnydays0101 · 31/03/2024 22:28

Yuck!

What’s yuck about it?. I’m a clean person, I would not make someone’s bed dirty after sleeping in it for one or two nights.

43ontherocksporfavor · 31/03/2024 22:35

DD is home today and sleeping in her bed for one night. I won’t change the bed until she next visits as no point in leaving it freshly made to gather dust for months.

It’s her sister!

Oh give over with the dramatics.

No wonder we have environmental issues when people are so neurotic they wash sheets after ONE night of use after (presumably) clean family or friend. Bonkers

It's not. I think you are the freak here.

eugh? Seriously? You just leave used sheets on the bed for someone else to use?

KickHimInTheCrotch · 31/03/2024 22:44

When I stay with either of my parents I always ask them if they want me to strip the beds as they are older and i do other things for them around the house from time to time including hanging out washing etc. They usually say no. I always say no if someone asks me. I would never offer at anyone elses house - it feels really rude, like you're telling them to do housework. I'd find it really weird if a guest took all the bedsheets off... and then what? Leave them in a messy pile? Bring them downstairs and give them to me? Maybe I don't want to wash sheets today and would rather just leave the spare room as it is?

No I would wash sheets before another guest stayed but don’t feel the need for them to be in the wash 0.2 seconds after someone has left my house!

Nope. Just nap in your own bed ffs

I’m sorry you have lost me. What does it matter if you wash them a day or a week later if no one else is sleeping in them in between time then? It’s still the same amount of water used. You’re not more eco friendly if you wait a week.

So you’d be happy to go to a hotel and sleep between the same sheets as the previous guest ??

SamTG · 31/03/2024 22:49

I voted YABU as guests are only doing it to be kind….BUT… I too find it annoying when guests (such as my adult stepson- who is lovely btw) strip the bed after staying for one night when they’re most likely going to be the next person to sleep in it anyway.
A total waste of their effort and mine.

I’d rather if people asked but it’s coming from a helpful place even if it’s not always well thought out.

Alicewinn · 31/03/2024 22:49

Yeah I once had a guest strip the bed and the linens were just screwed up on the floor & looked like they’d been trodden on. It really disturbed me it was so weird !!

stayathomer · 31/03/2024 22:52

I always just thought it was manners so the host wouldn't have to deal with your dirty sheets as much! I think if you didn't more people would say 'they didn't even strip the sheets!

PoppingTomorrow · 31/03/2024 22:53

Mydahliasareshit · 31/03/2024 22:07

There might be a reason, unknown to you currently, and she is saving embarrassment for all.

I wouldn't normally strip a bed, and like you have been a bit annoyed at guests doing it in the past. It's like 'you SHALL do washing of linen today'! 🤣

But in the last few minutes of a stay somewhere last year, we'd been on a walk around the garden to ooh and aah at some stuff. Came back, briefly stretched out on the bed to check emails etc prior to departure. Had no idea a tiny bit of mud was on my heel...yeah, we knew what it looked like...😯 that bed was stripped and folded for the wash so none the wiser!

I would much rather you told me so that I could spot treat any stains. That's another reason I don't like guests stripping the bed.

It annoys me because it creates a pile of laundry that has to be dealt with now rather than my convenience. The spare bedroom looks messy until it's done. As PP says the fresh sheets might not be needed for a while.
