Car & Insurance - your 17/18 old ?

DS16 fuelled by godparent promising to "help buy them a car" is now running away with ideas on what he can get at17/18 assuming passes test.

The voices of reason (known as old Mum & Dad) were trying to explain about insurance costs etc but it fell a bit on deaf ideas.

If you have a 17 or18 year old who has recently passed their test woukd you mind sharing what car they have bought as their first car and what the insurance is - maasive thank you in advance e

DS at 18 had a 1.4 Astra on a 10 plate. £250 on provisional then cost £1090 with dad as 2 ND driver although he had a years NCB and black box. The insurance went up to just under £1200 on renewal

@NImumconfused it just depends what car you drive.
My company wouldn't insure DD on my car at all - very boring 7 seater, but 1.8l engine.
Costs will be pretty much the same as on their own car with you as named driver - same risk.

Thanks, I thought I'd seen somewhere that it was cheaper to put them on your existing car but your logic makes sense! It's an ancient Mazda 3, 1.6, so probably not cheap.

As per your username are you actually in NI? If so I could recommend the local broker that we used for DD - she was a lifesaver!!

@goldenretrievermum5 yes I am, that would be brilliant, thanks!

A loooooong time since I passed but do passplus & IAM still make a difference?

Ourshoddyhouse · 01/04/2024 07:47

Young drivers insurance this might be useful

PrimalLass · 01/04/2024 07:58

Try quotes for both older and newer cars and set the start date a month away not next day.

KatieB55 · 01/04/2024 08:16

Look at taking a big voluntary excess and then getting a separate policy to insure the excess.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/04/2024 09:16

My 18yo passed in Nov 23 (aged 17). He hasn't driven since as £1k for insurance is ridiculous at this point (a-levels with an annual bus pass) despite living in a small village with no bus serves after 7pm or Sundays/Public Holidays.
Will reassess after his alevels depending on what he then does, if he gets an apprenticeship/job he'll need a car.

DD passed at 17 but didn’t get own car until 20( when she could buy most of it and insure it ) . It’s a mini 2012 and insured for £1800 with me as named driver and paying annually(me paying and her paying me back each month)and a black box and a big excess.
She has a job so needs a car but prior to that she was a named driver on my small car for an extra £50pm.

signsofspring123 · 01/04/2024 12:03

Looked at getting student DS 18 added onto my Fiat Panda; quoted £1900 annual or £250 for 2 weeks!!

considering he's not even here for at least 50% of the year its insane!

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/04/2024 12:27

@signsofspring123 ahen my DD was at uni I would buy temporary insurance from Veygo for holidays etc. It’s not cheap but could be worth a look.

karriecreamer · 01/04/2024 12:31

We kept an old car specifically for our son to learn in and then drive for his first few years after passing. It's a 2008 Citroen C3 that we bought from new. When he turned 17, we put him on the insurance as a named learned driver, cost around £300 per year. When he passed, we updated his status and the insurance rose to about £800 per year, with him being named driver on our policy. That's still how it is, now costs around £500 per year. The key is really him being on our insurance, driving our previous car, with full no claims discount, etc.

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/04/2024 12:32

Fronting is illegal though if he is the main driver and you’re putting him on as named only.

fishonabicycle · 01/04/2024 12:33

Son is now 23. We got him an aged Vauxhall corsa (2006 reg). His first year's insurance was £1100 (with a black box).

Insurance has gone up so much in last few months don’t rely on what people paid even a year or two ago. Teen in own small car is min £3,500 here (nice area) I know one paying £4500. Daughter on my older model fiat 500 as a named second driver was £2300 in January and we spent hours shopping around.

Yes, this 100%. Really bothers me when people come on to these threads stating how everyone’s recent quotes can’t possibly be right as 2/3 years ago they paid £1k max for their DC.. that’s the whole point!!

Patchworksack · 01/04/2024 14:17

10 yr old 1 litre Toyota Aygo, insurance for newly passed 17yr old is £1.2k
