Car & Insurance - your 17/18 old ?

BeaLola · 31/03/2024 18:41

DS16 fuelled by godparent promising to "help buy them a car" is now running away with ideas on what he can get at17/18 assuming passes test.

The voices of reason (known as old Mum & Dad) were trying to explain about insurance costs etc but it fell a bit on deaf ideas.

If you have a 17 or18 year old who has recently passed their test woukd you mind sharing what car they have bought as their first car and what the insurance is - maasive thank you in advance e

DS passed his test nov 2022. He has a 2011 mini one 1.6. His first policy was marmalade which started at about £1200 but he had to pay a little extra due to a slight break of the rules on his black box. The black box really didn’t like the country roads where we live and we had to complain a number of times for ridiculous red marks. He would get a red mark every day for going around one particular corner (even at 7miles an hour!) In nov 23 we changed to Hastings direct and that’s £759 pa. Interesting the black box seems to work better and he hasn’t had any issues.

Tronkmanton · 31/03/2024 20:44

Both my DC have 1.6l bog standard Golfs- one 64 plate, one 18 plate. Both have their own policies - DD cheaper on our multicar policy with LV, DS with Marmalade & black box. Max their policies have been are about £1300. Myself & DH are named drivers on both.

Livinghappy · 31/03/2024 20:51

You will have to shop around. Some better quotes if parents named as additional driver but also consider the marmalade miles coverage with telematics. You pay a reduced rate for a certain number of miles and increments are less if driving score of deemed good

It works well if the car isn't going to be used extensively.

Have you also costed lessons?? Getting to test is so expensive now so could relative help with that?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/03/2024 21:00

Oh my god these costs 😳 my dd has her test in a few weeks. She's looking at buying a car for around £3000 something small like an Aygo.

Is £2000 insurance all inclusive or just 3rd party?

It's crazy expensive.

House4DS · 31/03/2024 21:07

@BeaLola 1 litre Aygo should be more like £1000.
Don't buy the car until you've checked the insurance costs!
And use several price comparison sites.
The price of the car is almost irrelevant as the big cost risk to the insurance company will be damage to others/their cars.

ScoobyDoesnt · 31/03/2024 21:07

DD19 has just passed her test, she has a Chevrolet aveo, 1.2L which she was learning in. £30 a year tax too.

As a learner it was £300pa, now she’s passed we’ve just paid £900 with Hastings Direct - I thought this was really good. Maybe because she’s a little older, has a years no claims under her learner policy, and I’m a named driver with no convictions (luckily last 3 points have just come off!).

Marmalade wouldn’t insure, her learner insurer quoted £4700! Hastings was via confused.com and there were other policies of similar price. Went with this one due to defacto rating. Comprehensive policy, and includes windscreen and breakdown.

It’s fully comp, third party was actually more expensive for some reason.

3rd party insurance is often more expensive than comprehensive these days! This is down to statistics which show that the sort of people taking out 3rd party (e.g. young people) are a riskier bet.

Just a note about any of the policies with Black Boxes just check if your child works early mornings or late nights if they have a curfew. A lot of the ones we have looked at for DS wouldn't work as he works shifts.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 31/03/2024 21:17

I can’t remember the name of the company but it was recommended by Martin Lewis at the time as the best for learners, but they did have a ‘black box’ with a night time curfew.
Driving was monitored and the premium lowered as their driving was rated as good.

SendmetoWales · 31/03/2024 21:20

We got a quote for DS's insurance but didn't buy it straight away. We sat on it for about a week whilst we were waiting to pick up the car. Went in to pay and by waiting it went down £200. Then DH reminded me that we hadn't entered DS's middle name on the policy, we amended it to add in and it came down by another £300. Definitely worth bearing in mind to get a better deal.

kessiebird · 31/03/2024 21:21

18 year old DS. Nissan Micra January 2024. £2,300 without a black box, think it was £1,800 with. I am the named driver.

goldenretrievermum5 · 31/03/2024 21:23

Should’ve said in my post that the best advice that we got was to go through a local broker who specifically deals with young + new drivers. So much better than comparison sites - ours was a fountain of knowledge and was able to get us far cheaper quotes for far better, fully comprehensive policies.

NImumconfused · 31/03/2024 21:24

We're just reaching this stage and I was wondering, is it as expensive as this if you're insuring them on your existing car? There's now way we could find an extra 3 grand or so right now for insurance, and he won't be getting his own car at this point, we were planning on just letting him use mine.

Greenfluffycardi · 31/03/2024 21:25

We only looked at cars in insurance group 1 for our 17 year old. We ended up getting a Ford KA. Can’t remember exact cost but around £2k. No black box.

Katieg27 · 31/03/2024 21:27

Does anyone know if there’s any insurance companies that give a discount for having had a moped? I know it’s a bike policy so not the same but they’ve still been on the road for a year? Just wondering if this may bring the cost down at all?

FawnFrenchieMum · 31/03/2024 21:44

Also waiting a week or so for the insurance to start can make a huge difference. We saved £400 by waiting until the Saturday to start the insurance when we bought the car Monday (did and saved the quotes on the Sunday when we booked to go view it).

Gobimanchurian · 31/03/2024 21:51

My eldest passed at 18 and promptly went off to Uni. I've kept her insured as a named driver on my 1.2L Corsa for when she comes home. It added about £500 (with black box) to my insurance last year and about £300 (no BB) this year, though does have me and DP also named which keeps it down.

Twins turn 17 soon ... and they'll be going on it as provisional drivers (and so it begins again). If we can, we'll keep them all on it as named drivers, so hopefully by the time they are done with uni and are getting their own cars it will be cheaper as they'll have had x years of being named drivers and will also be that bit older.

I don't think we could afford to have them insured with own cars independently at this point...

Mycatmyworld · 31/03/2024 21:56

Location gets factored in as well.

yetanothernayme · 31/03/2024 22:01

My DS passed last May - paid £300 per month for 10 months (due to adding him to a multi plan policy) It's now gone up to £400 per month even though he has a years no claims! According to a broker I spoke to this is largely due to the car - a fiesta ST line. It's only 999cc but looks sporty.
He's now about to buy something like an Aygo or Citroen (C1? The tiny one!) as the quotes are much cheaper.

Those few years from 17 to 20 really make a big difference to insurance costs.

QueenMabby · 31/03/2024 22:13

DS passed in Jan. We bought him a car early March. 1L VW Polo. Insurance was £2k fully comp with a telematics device (no miles or time restrictions). DH and I are named drivers. He's 17 but 18 next month.

House4DS · 31/03/2024 22:15

@NImumconfused it just depends what car you drive.
My company wouldn't insure DD on my car at all - very boring 7 seater, but 1.8l engine.
Costs will be pretty much the same as on their own car with you as named driver - same risk.

Yes quite possibly
I was actually told to go for the picantos, hyundai, suzuki celano, fiat pandas as these were cars that teens didn't buy (they buy fiat 500, vw up, fiestas, polo's, corsas) so don't have such a high accident record

What I did was go onto auto trader and connected it to compare the market
Added all of dd details and then looked to see what cars came in at what prices

Fiestas, polo's etc were coming in about £1600
I wanted a hyundai anyway, but the 1.2 litre i10 only came in £60 more expensive than the 1.0 litre
