Car & Insurance - your 17/18 old ?

BeaLola · 31/03/2024 18:41

DS16 fuelled by godparent promising to "help buy them a car" is now running away with ideas on what he can get at17/18 assuming passes test.

The voices of reason (known as old Mum & Dad) were trying to explain about insurance costs etc but it fell a bit on deaf ideas.

If you have a 17 or18 year old who has recently passed their test woukd you mind sharing what car they have bought as their first car and what the insurance is - maasive thank you in advance e

My son (not yet 17) has bought a Seat Ibiza. Insurance is £311 a year whilst on his provisional and quotes are around £3,000 a year for when he passes. He is an apprentice so is paying for it himself. If he was relying on us paying he wouldn't be having a car.

CheshireCats · 31/03/2024 18:47

Peugeot 207. (Old banger)
£3,500 insurance for first year.

PonyPatter44 · 31/03/2024 18:49

The Small Pony bought a fairly elderly but mechanically sound 2004 Nissan Micra just before she passed her test four years ago. It cost £800 from some shonky garage in the next town over, and it was very reliable for another 18 months. The insurance was negligible while she was on her provisional, and leapt up to £2000+ as soon as she passed! The first time it started playing up, she was already in work so went straight out and bought herself a newish small car. Insurance has gradually come down on that and she is paying less than £1k now.

SundayFundayz · 31/03/2024 18:49

Kia Picanto. £1700 when he passed his test in Jan but all his mates passing now seem to be getting much higher quotes. That was insurance in his name with DH on it.

RandomMess · 31/03/2024 18:56

Insurance is at least £2k for the cheapest quote with a named driver.

It's a nightmare and seems to be going up monthly.

Dewdilly · 31/03/2024 18:57

My DD passed her test at 18 but didn’t get a car until she was 24. I think she paid about £800 in insurance, but I can’t swear to that. Less than £1,000 anyway.

Springtime789 · 31/03/2024 18:59

Audi a1, insurance was 3k.

Celticliving · 31/03/2024 19:02

I was 30 years old when I passed my test 14 years ago.

Despite being told "it will be cheaper because you are an older driver," my insurance was over £1,500 a year.

Only now have I got it down to £350 a year. It's ridiculous.

Jackyboyisalaugh · 31/03/2024 19:09

Aygo £1.2k for year one, cheaper afterwards.

CheshireCats · 31/03/2024 19:11

@Jackyboyisalaugh Is that recently? It's cheaper than any recent teen I know of.

sleepyscientist · 31/03/2024 19:49

BIL - non kid car and multi car policy works about 1.6k for his car. Also the excess is up at 1k

SendmetoWales · 31/03/2024 19:51

A1 here too and the insurance is £2,300 which was by far the cheapest quotation we found.

SendmetoWales · 31/03/2024 19:52

Sorry an Audi A1.

FawnFrenchieMum · 31/03/2024 19:54

DS 17 originally got a 1.2 2006 fiesta. Paid £350 for provisional insurance then when he passed cheapest was £3900 for just 3000 miles and no commuting. He then swapped for a 2012 Kia Picanto and has got it for £3600 with 7000 miles and commenting. This is in the last month.

NavyPeer · 31/03/2024 20:04

Make sure he is aware in his online car shopping sprees it should be a 1.0 litre. Absolutely no more. That’s what makes it rocket

i’m a member of a Facebook group where this comes up frequently, they buy their 17 year old a tidy new-ish car (usually a mini or a fiat 500 or Audi or something else desirable) at 1.2 litres and then are shocked when insurance for a new to driving child costs more than their already pretty spendy car.

Look at Volkswagen up!, Suzuki swifts, Kia picanto or one of the little hyundais

rosesinmygarden · 31/03/2024 20:05

Dd drives our 15 year old 1.6 diesel VW golf on a marmalade telematics policy. £180 per month.

But, she passed last may. I suspect it won't go down much this year!

TooTiredToBeCreative · 31/03/2024 20:06

£3800 for VW Polo for DS 17, with a black box.

jackstini · 31/03/2024 20:17

Renault Clio 0.9

Was £240 before she passed, we had quotes of approx £2400 for after

However, we found out if you go with Marmalade before passing, they don't put it up after passing, but they are more expensive

So we did the £240 to start with for 8 months, then a week before her test cancelled that and got a Marmalade policy for £1200, then that remained same price once she passed

RoseDog · 31/03/2024 20:23

Ds 1litre 2013 fiesta was £1200 for first year insurance with dp as named driver it went down to £900 after a year with Ticker.

Dd 1 litre fiesta 2022 (was less than a year old when she bought it) £1600 first year went down to £1200 also Ticker.

They both have black boxes but there is no time limits and high mileage.

KatLiz · 31/03/2024 20:24

My 17 year old passed and got his car in February. Cost £1800 insurance on telematics policy. His car has 1.4 engine (Alfa Romeo Mito 2010 plate) and was actually cheaper to insure than a lot of cars with smaller engines he viewed.

goldenretrievermum5 · 31/03/2024 20:26

DD aged 19 has just got a 2 year old 1.5l Mini. Her first year of insurance has come in at £4k (with black box + me as a named driver) which to be honest was a pretty good price for us considering that for older cars with smaller engines we were being quoted similar or even more expensive on quite a few occasions

Smaller engine = less expensive isn’t always true nowadays. We had scarily high quotes for 1l VW polos and ups compared to the 1.5l Mini that DD settled on.

YellowSunRays · 31/03/2024 20:34

DS, now 19, got a 1.4 Corsa almost 2 years ago. First year insurance was around £1600 and last year was £1400 (both without black box). He's getting quotes now for renewal at around £900- £1000.
In contrast, his girlfriend, aged 17, passed her test last month.
She's got a much older Ford KA, smaller engine and its cost her £2800 to insure.
Just gives an idea of how much insurance has gone up for young drivers in last two years...

Jackyboyisalaugh · 31/03/2024 20:36

CheshireCats · 31/03/2024 19:11

@Jackyboyisalaugh Is that recently? It's cheaper than any recent teen I know of.

She passed in 2022, putting me in as a named driver really reduced the price.

House4DS · 31/03/2024 20:38

After significant amounts of research, the cheapest insurance is for 1 litre C1, 107 or aygo. They are all the same car with different bodies. Also £20 road tax.
i10, citigo and VW up also come in low.
Put the reg of anything they are looking at into moneysupermarket etc.
Seems madness to buy a cheap car that will then cost 2k+ to insure. Better using that additional cash on the car itself (or not spend it at all).
Small car, smallest engine = lowest insurance.
Aged 17 is not the time for the dream car!
