To wonder how people read a book a day

Or 100’s of books a year?

OP posts:
bryceQ · 31/03/2024 16:24

Not a day but I've read about 25 since Christmas. Not war and peace type books though!

HoldingTheDoor · 31/03/2024 16:27

Some people are just very fast readers. If I have a whole day to do nothing but read then I could(and have) read 3 or 4 average length books in a day.

There’s nothing superior about reading at a faster(or slower pace) though.

whirlyhead · 31/03/2024 16:27

I kept track of the number of books I read for 5 years and averaged 165 a year. I can easily read a book in a day and on holiday I can read loads! War and peace did take a week (and it was kind of dull). What are you wondering about exactly?

Redglitter · 31/03/2024 16:30

I read one every couple of days. I've always been a fast reader

When I was at primary school I borrowed so many books from the school library the head teacher said there was no way I was reading them so quickly & I was getting no more til I'd read the ones I had out. I'd already finished them

She selected a book for me to read & when I returned it I was sent to her office and made to do a test on the book to prove I'd read it!!

Thankfully it didn't put me off my love of reading

AuntieMarys · 31/03/2024 16:31

I've read 40 this year. I watch an hour of TV a day...no more.

Blackcats7 · 31/03/2024 16:31

I used to do this regularly. These days I barely read as my concentration has gone with disability. Now I listen to audio books instead.

BMW6 · 31/03/2024 16:31

I can read a book a day on holiday easily, if its a lazing by the pool / on the beach type.

I'm just a very fast reader. If watching a quiz where the questions are written rather than spoken I've said the answer before DH has read the question. Annoys him no end 😕

DelphiniumBlue · 31/03/2024 16:32

I read about 150 pages per hour, but less if the text is challenging. So I could easily read a novel or 2 in a day if I didn’t spend so much time on here and faffing around.
I used to spend a lot more time reading, but even post DC and working, I’ve often read a book in a day. The house is not that pristine though, and I don’t watch much telly.

Lilyhatesjaz · 31/03/2024 16:35

It takes me at least a week to read an average size paperback, my DD would easily read the same book in a day.
But it turns out she reads faster than speaking speed, where as I read the same speed I talk, this was a surprise as I thought everyone read like I do.

Hoglet70 · 31/03/2024 16:36

I've read 33 books so far this year. I don't watch that much TV really.

PutASpellOnYou · 31/03/2024 16:39

I'm a very fast reader, but l can't believe how long and drawn out audio books are some are approx 17 hours long, if not longer.

Precipice · 31/03/2024 16:41

Short books, lots of time, fast reading?

A 100 per year isn't so many - about 3 days for a book. '100s', well, depends.

Not all books are the same. Some books I can read in an evening.

StillCreatingAName · 31/03/2024 16:45

I really lost my reading mojo during the lockdown periods, it took me a while to get back into it. I read in the evenings when previously I would have picked up my phone, I’m listening to multiple audio books too, which I tend to use for journeys to work (or podcasts) which keeps you engaged in stories generally. Some people waste hours scrolling on social media when they could be reading or listening to actual stories that have some positive impact on your brain.

WarningOfGails · 31/03/2024 16:45

I’m a very fast reader. I always have been I think. If I am on a sun lounger on holiday I could easily read more than a book a day.

in normal life with work, kids etc, I probably read two chapters a day.

m00ngirl · 31/03/2024 16:51

Can I ask when do you read? Do you schedule it? I'd like to make more time for reading in my life but currently not sure how possible... stressful job, husband, pets, housework, family... reading is slow and takes a lot of mental energy for me as well.. but i think it could help me relax

sleepyscientist · 31/03/2024 16:54

It depends on the book I can read something like a Lee child book in a day without any effort. Really got into a series and read 10 books in a week (on holiday)

BeaRF75 · 31/03/2024 16:54

Easy. Start at breakfast and keep reading until the book is finished (Sundays are perfect for this).

LegoLady95 · 31/03/2024 16:58

I have a busy life, have 3 kids and work almost FT.
I don't watch TV or doom scroll on my phone.
I listen to audiobooks when doing mundane tasks such as cleaning and cooking.
I read my kindle whenever I cam, including on my lunch break at work.

Catza · 31/03/2024 16:59

Given that an average Brit watches around 4h of TV a day plus scrolls social media, you can easily see where time for reading may come from. 100 books a year is very achievable with full time work and other commitments. But I can only read one book a day on a holiday.

Elebag · 31/03/2024 17:02

I used to read lots of books before dcs. A book in two days on holiday. No interruptions.

This year I'm challenging myself to read one book a month. I'm too busy and tired to read more.

I increase the speed of them, sometimes I think they are read so slow!

rwalker · 31/03/2024 17:19

When we were kids my mum would sit in the garden most of the day a read a mills and boon book a day

GreenSmithing · 31/03/2024 17:23

If I have a block of time available, then it's definitely quicker for me to read a book in a day, than it is to spread out the same book in sections over a couple of weeks. Just in terms of remembering what the plot is, who the characters are, picking up on foreshadowing. It's having that block of time available that is the problem and not feeling like I should be using it for other things. Reading for half an hour in the evening doesn't work for me. I'm asleep in 10 minutes😂I used to read om my commute but wfh cut down on that.

Allmarbleslost · 31/03/2024 17:28

I make sure I read every day, even if it's just a chapter. I probably average a book a week but if I tooI out TV and doom scrolling I could definitely do one in a day.

I agree with this. I definitely read faster than an audiobook, and don't really get on with them as a result.
