To wonder how people read a book a day

Or 100’s of books a year?

I read about 150 pages per hour, but less if the text is challenging. So I could easily read a novel or 2 in a day if I didn’t spend so much time on here and faffing around.
I used to spend a lot more time reading, but even post DC and working, I’ve often read a book in a day. The house is not that pristine though, and I don’t watch much telly.

You sound like me. If I didn’t spend so much time on here I’d probably read a book every week! As it is I only read 4 books last year, I have very poor concentration for some reason and very few books actually grab my interest nowadays.
I probably have 25 started but not finished books stacked on my dresser 🤷🏼‍♀️

coastalhawk · 31/03/2024 19:31

I read every night 30 mins or so before bed and more during holidays and weekends. Get through a lot

SevenSeasOfRhye · 31/03/2024 19:32

I'm a very fast reader - more of a curse than a blessing - I envy people whose books last them a long time.

CosmosQueen · 31/03/2024 19:33

Do any of you find that the type of typecast/print influences whether or not you read a book? Some definitely puts me off.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/03/2024 19:35

Depends on the length of the book really. I've read 42 this year. Some audio. It's easy to get high numbers for the year if you put the time in.

Strokethefurrywall · 31/03/2024 19:41

I read fast - went through 85 or so last year, and that was with a few weeks not reading when I was slammed with work.

Unless there's a new show to binge watch, I'm reading.

MargaretThursday · 31/03/2024 19:49

I'm a very quick reader. But I don't often read a whole book now. I tend to dip in and out of ones I love, so I'll read a couple of chapters maybe of one, then pick up another book.
It's comforting.

Autienotnaughtie · 31/03/2024 19:49

I read around 2 book a week.i work part time and have 3 children.

I will read for ten minutes while eat breakfast. Or 20 minutes while ds is watching tv. Or an hour after kids are in bed. It all adds up.

byteme1011 · 31/03/2024 20:01

I go through phases where I read a lot, will say I picked up Kaszuo Ishiguro's? (probably misspelled!) Remains of the day and devoured it, was sneaking in reading

Listening to an audiobook is not reading. It’s listening. It irritates me when people claim they’ve ‘read’ 100s of books when actually they’ve listened to them. There’s nothing wrong with listening to audiobooks at all but it’s not reading.

I disagree and think that's snobbery. I only have time for audiobooks, they suit my lifestyle. I can still discuss the book and feel the emotion.

BigMandyHarris · 31/03/2024 20:44

I read but often feel it’s just a waste of time.

PostItInABook · 31/03/2024 20:47

You can of course discuss it and feel the emotion, but you haven’t read it. You’ve listened to it. Reading is the process of looking at written symbols and letters and understanding the meaning of them. Listening is not reading. And as I’ve said……twice now…..there is nothing wrong with it and one way isn’t better than the other…….but listening is not reading. You don’t need to be all offended about it. It’s just a fact.

ADHDGURL · 31/03/2024 21:01

I'm well over 100 this year..but.. I have grown up children and a lot of free time.. its not how much you read its the content..does it make your reading time worthwhile..
I've always been a fast reader, my teachers at primary would test me to see if I had read/skimmed.. I had read! Bit more than the amount of books I always read books that I want to read and enjoy.. even of it takes longer, books are the gateway to another dimension, enjoy the time there..otherwise what's the point? .Happy reading OP

nonevernotever · 31/03/2024 21:02

I can easily read a book a day, more for lighter fiction, but I'm a fast reader, I don't watch much TV, I can happily ignore the housework and I read almost everywhere. In bed before I get up , at mealtimes if I'm eating alone, in the bath, in the evening in bed before I go to sleep.

Devilshands · 31/03/2024 21:03

When I did my A-levels I read Anna Karenina in a day. Last HP book in four hours (I was 14 when it came out).

I find it easier to read things in one chunk -
if I dont read it in one chunk, chances are it’s never being finished.

Every Sunday is my reading day. Other than dog walking, it’s all I do. Perfect way to relax ahead of work the following day

Hartley99 · 31/03/2024 21:11

But WHAT books do they read? Most people could read Dan Brown in a day. But that's very different to reading Middlemarch or David Copperfield in a day! I'm deeply suspicious of people who claim they can do this. I know the critic Harold Bloom could read 400 pages an hour. That means he could read three or four Virginia Woolf novels in an afternoon! But then he was one of the greatest literary scholars of the 20th-century.

Floralnomad · 31/03/2024 21:13

My adult daughter can read a book a day , I read fast enough but only read in bed for a couple of hours and not every night . I’ve read about 18/19 books this year .

There was a senior judge who was said to be able to read documents faster than he could turn the pages.

Woahthehorsey · 31/03/2024 21:23

Pre kids I could easily do this.

Now with 2 kids I can't get 5 minutes peace to read a book. I don't think I've read more than 5 books since the eldest was born 8 years ago. I just don't get enough time to get in to a book anymore!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 31/03/2024 21:24

I’ve read 21 this year. If i got off Mumsnet and doom scrolling I could read more. I used to read on my lunch break but I make myself go for a walk. I don’t watch loads of tv but I go to various hobbies in the week.

Foxy1616 · 31/03/2024 21:26

We prioritise our reading - I watch very little tv, don’t spend hours strolling round shops, always have an audiobook in the car when travelling and read rather than wasting time scrolling for hours through rubbish on my phone.
I work full time, volunteer at least 5hours a week + 1/2 weekends a month, manage family/friend commitments (who don’t all live locally!), cook/clean/shop/do laundry and still manage to read well over 100 books a year.
You have the same number of hours in the day, you just choose to spend them differently to me.

LifeofBrienne · 31/03/2024 19:03

@PostItInABook how do you think what you get from a book is different if you listen to a book rather than read it? Because I can’t think of any practical difference or any reason for considering that it’s inferior if that’s what people enjoy.
Although as a fast reader, I’m forced by an audiobook to slow down and listen to every word, whereas I often skim read a book when the plot gets exciting! I will go back and reread books though if I enjoyed them so may get the details I missed on my second, or third reading.

I can’t do audiobooks. I can’t concentrate on them. Tried them when walking, driving but can’t get on with them

TubeScreamer · 31/03/2024 21:28

I’ve given up on tv, because there’s nothing that really grabs my attention at the moment, so tend to read for an hour or two in the evening. I also read for 15 minutes here or there throughout the day when I’m having a break from work and a coffee.

Horsewhisperers · 31/03/2024 21:29

Pre internet I read around 3 books each week. Now I waste too much time on social media. I think it also makes it more difficult to concentrate on long texts.

Greenfluffycardi · 31/03/2024 21:32

I rarely “read” books but listen on audible. I can easily get through 4 a week. I have my headphones in all the time, when I’m doing housework or gardening or walking the dogs.
