To wonder how people read a book a day

Or 100’s of books a year?

OP posts:
orangeleopard · 31/03/2024 17:29

I don’t how people have the time. I read about 2 hours a day in the car during the school run as that’s the only time I get, and it still takes me a month to get through a book. I suspect the people who get through loads either have loads of free time, or don’t consume the book properly. I can’t imagine not taking in every word and getting through it as quickly as possible for the sake of it rather than absorbing every word.

BlueFairyBugsBooks · 31/03/2024 17:36

I can easily read a book a day. Sometimes 2. I've just started book 85 this year. But some of them are only just over 100 pages long.

peloton2024 · 31/03/2024 17:38

A paperback chick lit type novel takes me about an hour to read so not long

Howsoon23 · 31/03/2024 17:42

Yeah I read really fast - also won't do audio books or watch videos if a transcript is available because its so slow - read about 40 books this year so far - I do read a fair amount of lighter fiction and detective stories because they relax me - probably would be slower on heavier stiff

MagentaRocks · 31/03/2024 17:42

I am a fast reader and I also don’t sleep well so I can easily start a book before bed and have it finished by the morning. I have read about 40 books this year on my kindle plus some others on holiday. I love reading and always have a book on the go.

PaminaMozart · 31/03/2024 17:47

I can absolutely believe that it is not too difficult to read over 100 books a year.

But how much do you all actually retain of what you have read?

Caswallonthefox · 31/03/2024 17:48

Because they don't watch TV
Because they need an escape from reality
Because their mental health is shit
Because sleep patterns are shit
Because they like reading.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 31/03/2024 17:49

I always bemoan the fact that I don't read as much as I did but then I get the weekly screen time report and realise if I stopped doomscrolling I could, easily.

The same as anyone who reads slower
I got sick of being asked that at school then as an adult

"Are you actually reading that?"
(From a teacher) "read it properly"
"But you won't remember any of it"

WolfFoxHare · 31/03/2024 17:56

I can read a book in a day. I could read two if they weren’t too long. I don’t usually these days because I have a job and child, so I just don’t have as much time.

i retain it perfectly well, too. Some people just read faster than others.

dollybird · 31/03/2024 17:56

I can read a book in a day, but mostly don't as I don't have time, or am doing my cross stitch. Since I've had goodreads I can keep track easier. I usually have 25 books as my target, but haven't met it the last few years. I've read 14 so far this year, which us unusual. The most I read in a year was 43. I'm not a fast reader particularly.

onemoremile · 31/03/2024 17:57

I read a lot, I read quickly and absorb information very quickly from reading which is useful as I'm a solicitor.

I generally read about 120 books a year. I tend to read non fiction slightly slower than fiction, partly longer books and less likely to be really compelling.

BMW6 · 31/03/2024 16:31

I can read a book a day on holiday easily, if its a lazing by the pool / on the beach type.

I'm just a very fast reader. If watching a quiz where the questions are written rather than spoken I've said the answer before DH has read the question. Annoys him no end 😕

I'm the same

DominiqueBernard · 31/03/2024 18:00

I have a long commute which I tend to use for work e-mails. If I didn't, I could read a short to medium novel in a day (I read fiction fast).

MolkosTeenageAngst · 31/03/2024 18:03

Obviously it depends on the book but a lots of contemporary books are quite quick to get through, maybe 6 hours or so to read a Richard & Judy book club type book. If I spent all of my free time reading I could probably get through a book every couple of days and more than that at the weekends. As it is I hardly ever read but that’s because I don’t really prioritise it, if I’m on holiday for a week I would likely get through a book a day on average.

thevegetablesoup · 31/03/2024 18:04

I have to speed up audiobooks as they are read too slowly for me

I can't stand being read to Blush
Even as a child mum just gave me the book

HunterHearstHelmsley · 31/03/2024 18:13

I can read one a day if I'm really into it. A book I'm not into can take 2 weeks as I keep getting distracted, but I'm one of those idiots who will keep reading a book because I've started it. I average 1-2 a week usually. I'll read an hour or two a day as a minimum, mainly because I don't pay attention when I'm watching TV so end up reading instead.

minthybobs · 31/03/2024 18:14

I can easily read a book in an evening. Average novel size. But I don’t watch tv loads. I watch specific things on Netflix or bbciplayer but I don’t watch tv every night, probably once a week. I think you’d be surprised how much time is wasted scrolling SM and watching tv. That’s not a judgement on those things btw - I do them too just not often hence I prioritise reading

Mementomorissons · 31/03/2024 18:15

It really depends on the type of books you're reading. Best seller/thriller type books I can read in about 4 hours because they spell everything out for you like a comfort tv show.

But other novels by my favourite authors can take me weeks, usually because I'm pausing on every few sentences to sort of take in what's being said, and then need lots of rests

Timeforanewnam · 31/03/2024 18:17

I do it by not really watching telly , ignoring 90% of the house work and my kids are older teens now - would have been trickier when they were younger

muddyford · 31/03/2024 18:20

Very little television and hardly any social media. Only MN.

2catsandhappy · 31/03/2024 18:21

Oooh oooh I know!
I call it "Housework blinkers."

Soubriquet · 31/03/2024 18:23

Easy. I can easily read a book a day if I spent all day reading it. I usually spend one-two hours a night reading. I read on average 3-4 books a week

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 31/03/2024 18:33

I envy fast readers - a bit. I’m a fairly slow reader.

But part of that is that I enjoy concentrating on the text (if a book’s any good).

With fiction I go back to passages I’ve enjoyed and make mental notes about striking, elegant or efficient writing. Some phrases are so good that I try to memorise them.

With non-fiction I linger over interesting facts and arguments.

If a book’s bad, I skim it.
