Shop has overcharged me

This has never happened to me before.

I went into a shop and I bought one bottle of coca cola and one bag of crisps. I tapped my debit card to pay.

I've just looked at my mobile banking app.

The shop has overcharged me. They have charged me for

4 bottles of coke.

It shows on my bank like this:

Coca cola 1 80
Coc cola 1.80
Coca cola 1.80
Coca cola 1.80

On top of that they have charged me for 3 bags of crisps

And they have also charged me three other amounts of money that are
£4.80
£5.00 and
£5.80
It shows their shop name beside these transactions

I have frozen my card on my bank app so it can't be used by anyone anymore.

But i'm just shocked. How could this have happened?

I just tapped my debit card on their card reader, and I checked the amount when I tapped.

Can a shop merchant get card details from their card reader, and use the details?

Perhaps it will right itself when not pending.

SummerGardener · 29/03/2024 23:49

Did you get a receipt?

How can the name of what you bought be on your bank app, that's not how it works unless the shop is actually called "coca cola"

Because its fraud?

It's listed as the item Coca cola.

Ive gone back through all of my mobile banking , and in no other shop in my entire history , has the item name been listed.

Only this shop

So there is something very fishy.

It looks like she typed in Coca cola as the merchant name and just kept charging my card over and over.

I don't think a cashier can just randomly change the merchant name!!

This all sounds a bit fishy.

Itsalwaysthelasttime · 30/03/2024 00:27

That makes no sense how would the shop assistant make money by charging you extra on a card that went through the shops system?

concernedchild · 30/03/2024 06:45

I doubt it's actually the young girl, and I doubt it'll be an airport shop. Just report it as fraud, get the new card and move on.

Noyesnoyes · 30/03/2024 07:40

@Sashamalia why do you think it's not safe to use a debit card? You've not even found out what's happened yet?

bevelino · 30/03/2024 07:56

This happened to me and I was contacted by my bank who alerted me to the fact that every time I tapped the card reader at my local church it took a duplicate payment. When I queried it with the church they noted that the reader was duplicating every payment from everyone. The reader was faulty.

Sounds a reasonable explanation

No one can change the merchant name, that's not how it works.

I dont use my phone to pay but I was once in a cafe with a friend who did and it showed up on her statement as the place next door it was something to with her bank app trying to categorise the transaction and using the nearest place it could pick up so that could happen but as I said above unless the place is called coca cola something odd is going on

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 30/03/2024 10:12

we dont use apps etc as dont trust them on transaction but we have barclays debit and cc app and can often see almost immediately depending on store how much we spent but never itemised

We try to avoid tapping our cards as the bank does not take responsibility but tap them at major stores and fuel stations depending on spend limits.

Hoppinggreen · 30/03/2024 10:17

I have never seen the item listed on my banking app, just the shop name so its very strange that you can see that.
If you used the shop before you got on the plane is it in departures? If so you might struggle to get back in there

stayathomer · 30/03/2024 10:20

Is the fraud number for the bank not 24/7 op? Maybe get onto them? Hope it gets sorted easily

BobbyBiscuits · 30/03/2024 12:04

I'd block cards, report fraud and get new card and PIN. I reckon the shop is up to no good. Could you contact the airport management, the shop is their tenant. It could be just that one staff member. But just imagine they must think noone will ever come back, they might not even live here, too busy to check, going away so preoccupied etc. even more so if the shop was airside...perfect place to pull a fast one in this manner.

suburburban · 30/03/2024 12:13

Hopefully you'll get it sorted out

Be really vigilant and request a receipt.

When you tapped did it show the amount of say £2.80?

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 30/03/2024 12:13

Contact your bank. Reporting fraudulent transactions as soon as you learn of them is usually part of the T&Cs of bank accounts.

GimmeGin · 30/03/2024 12:27

Don’t bother to go back to the shop, your bank will investigate for you.

Can you report each transaction via the app? I’ve got a Monzo card, and can do this.

if they are still pending, they may just disappear so no fraud committed?

you are being very quick to blame “the girl” when the transactions are still pending.

chocolategg · 30/03/2024 12:32

That's odd. Phone your bank

xyz111 · 30/03/2024 12:39

I had a random transaction go through for a chicken shop that I'd never been to that town before!! Contacted HSBC and they just sorted it straight away.
I don't understand how it shows Coca Cola. It's so odd.

BartiRum · 30/03/2024 15:02

Was there anyone else in the shop at the same time? My bank card was cloned from my phone at the train station, several payments taken in a row for great western railway, starting at £4.25 and going up in ever increasing amounts before the bank recognised it as fraud and contacted me.
