Don’t get a dog

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 28/03/2024 23:30

Dogs are really hard work. They don’t come house trained, so expect to have wee and poo all over your floors. They will eat stuff they shouldn’t and then they vomit. They can be very noisy, they bark and they whine. Some keep you awake half the night. The vet’s bills are horrendous. £75 for a consultation, then medication on top of that. They need regular medication for worms, ticks and fleas. Many dogs need trips to the dog groomer, factor in about £50 every six weeks. This is for 10 years or more. Then they break your heart. 🐾💔

Please don’t get a dog, unless you have thought about all the above.

My darling girl did all those things, and the ĺast of them today .
Would trade the next ten years of my life to have her back again .

My dogs are reaching the final stage of their lives. They’re old and slow and loved as much as ever. Some day soon they will break my heart.
And it will be worth it for all the joy they have brought to my life.

Whenever there is a thread that is perhaps not favourable towards dog and cat owners, always a stereotyped response that they have to bring in children as a comparison.

Youdontevengohere · 01/04/2024 11:30

I have a dog and more children than the MN accepted number of 2, so I’m a lost cause.

That’s not patronising at all! 😂

I am not concerned if you find it patronising or not.
I just want people to think before medicating their dogs every two minutes.

I would advise anyone to get their information from a qualified vet, rather than a self appointed expert on the internet.

My dog came housetrained (was a rescue), is only peeing etc indoors because she is a very old girl now.
She has has barked about 10 times in her whole 13 years, and has never gone to a groomers... she has little to groom.
Vet consult is £50 here, and I use my own logic when it comes to my dog. Would I go to A&E if I had a cut? No. Some people go to the vet for every tiny thing. I use common sense.
No flea treatment as she does not have them and never has. I don't worm her either, and she has been all clear when tested.

That's 42

42 dogs? That would be a bit too many even for me! I'm up to 4 just now (kept 2 puppies from a litter we bred) and wouldn't have it any other way. It's definitely a lifestyle choice though! 🤣

redboxer321 · 01/04/2024 22:56

@Manyandyoucanwalkover I actually can't believe you've got the nerve to call me patronising considering your initial post. But if the cap fits:

Dogs are really hard work - they can be but I'd say they are more of a commitment than hard work.
They don’t come house trained - some do, some don't.
So expect to have wee and poo all over your floors - this should tell you that you are doing something wrong or that something is wrong with the dog.
They will eat stuff they shouldn’t and then they vomit - management is key here.
They can be very noisy, they bark and they whine - good, they are letting me know that something is wrong.
Some keep you awake half the night - only in exceptional circumstances.
The vet’s bills are horrendous - Agreed.
They need regular medication for worms, ticks and fleas - many people would disagree with you on this.
Many dogs need trips to the dog groomer - and many don't.
Then they break your heart - Agreed

As for accusing me of being a self-appointed expert, I'm only asking people to think. It's you who have come on to the internet to shout out a whole lot of ill-informed absolutes. Again, you've quite some nerve.

I won't go into details as I can feel the tears welling up but I used to believe in what I now believe is OTT medicalisation of dogs. Mine had a reaction. I don't know if it shortened her life but I suspect it did.

Seeing as you have come onto MN to tell others what to do, perhaps you'll listen to a suggestion from me: Don't start threads when you clearly have very little knowledge and experience of the subject matter.

Who on earth medicates their dogs every 2 minutes?! 😆

You may get a better reaction to your points/your posts, if you didn't post such hilariously exaggerated hyperbole!

The poster clearly said overall cats are easier. Your cat is an extreme example. Why can't it go outside?

redboxer321 · 02/04/2024 08:29

SabreIsMyFave · 31/03/2024 18:40

Agree with a pp. My cat (nearly 17,) has not even caught a bird in 7-8 years, and even when she did catch them, she rarely killed them. Just brought them in the house. She dropped said bird in front of me, and I would pick it up and pop it on the shed roof. It would fly off a minute later.

And you might get a better reaction if you didn't, ahem, misrepresent the truth.

As for my earlier comment on about medicating dogs every two minutes, if you've taken that comment literally then, well, there's probably nothing more to say.

Oh FGS. You happen to have a high maintenance cat. In general, cats are much less work than dogs - I don't know why that is so hard to wrap your head round. It's like someone saying, 'Oh Springer Spaniels don't need a lot of exercise because my Springer is very lazy and hates going out,' when that is not the norm. And by the way PP said they can be left overnight, not left out, and I've never once, in my 50 odd years, seen a cat being walked. I know people do it, but it is rare.

You can see if posters hit the thanks button. There’s no sign of it on this thread.

Don't spout ridiculous hyperbole and daft exaggerations to try and look all totes hilaire and clever, and then get all salty when someone calls you out on it eh?
