Hi,

bit of an embarrassing one but I’ve bitten my nails too far down and ended up with some kind of problem- it’s like there’s a bit of nail still sticking out the side of the nail even though the nail itself is bitten back to the cuticle

I’ve got an extremely high pain tolerance but even I can’t seem to get to the side bit out because of how much it hurts, but also I don’t think my nail will be able to regrow if it’s still in and it’s causing some discomfort now

does anyone know what to do? I’ve never ever had this problem before- I’ve always been a nail biter but never as far up as this. It’s not infected or anything I just don’t want it to become infected etc

pics for reference, the bit of nail I’m talking about is at the left side x

Should have said in my original post- I know for problems with toenails there’s the podiatrist, I already went to the pharmacy who said they can’t do anything and my GP might not be able to help because it’s not actually infected yet; but obviously I’m just worried about it becoming infected or affecting how the nail regrows if it’s just left alone
I know it’s my own fault for biting my nails so much but I’ve never gone this far before and I’m so cross with myself

@Nailedit4, do you mean that there is an ingrown part of your nail? If you can, get a wisp of cotton wool and put it under the corner that's digging in.

I can't see your pictures but it sounds like a hangnail. Definitely DO NOT pull it out. Hangnails are notoriously easily infected. Clip it as short as you can with a nail clippers and put on some antiseptic cream and a bandaid. If it is red try magnesium sulfate paste to really stop any infection getting worse.

Right finally got a photo that will upload, quality is rubbish though apologies

I'm not a health care professional, but your picture looks like a paronychia, which is a bacterial or fungal inflammation. Have a look at this article.
