AIBU?

Excusing my burp?!

I always say excuse me after I burp - I generally only burp out loud at home.

I have noticed my husband constantly saying excuse you, after I burp. Even if I have already said excuse me. He makes a big deal of saying it.

I pointed it out and asked him why he's doing it when I've already done it, he said it's polite for him to do it.

I disagree and think if he's saying it to me it's rude, like he's making a point of excusing me because I haven't done it myself. But I always do.

I would never dream of excusing someone else out in public. I say it to my children to remind them to excuse themselves but never anyone else!!

AIBU to think he is being rude or am I thinking too much of this?

Sounds about right to me. You burped and asked him to excuse you - and he replied that he did. It's manners.

If we said excuse me after every burp in my house there wouldn't be a moment of silence!

He just says excuse you. Not that I am excused. Is this what you mean?

He often doesn't give me a chance to say excuse you as he jumps in straight away so it's like he's not excusing me - he's making a point of doing it for me??

With my recent change in eating habits I feel the same way and getting very annoyed at being excused continuously, I think it's rude to mention it. Often I'm not even in the same room

What on earth are you eating to be this burpy?

Tone is everything! My mum’s carer said “excuse you” recently, when we were helping her to get out of her wheelchair and she let out a fart. It was a nice and affectionate way of accepting a slightly embarrassing moment for mum.

An admonishing tone would be something completely different.

I always say a really camp exaggerated 'excusay mwahhh' and chuckle. I often burp after food at home. If the 'excuse you' was light-hearted in the way my way of excusing myself was, then it's cool. Otherwise he's just being uptight.
I found the more I burp, the less I fart. So I don't feel embarrassed about it at all! It's for the best for those around me I figure, haha.

Again, what on earth are you eating that makes you burp so much? I’m struggling to think of the last time I burped…?

Unless you are a baby or a very old or very ill person, burping is very rude. There are no manners around burping, you just don't do it.

For most people it’s not deliberate and is a reflex….do you ‘just not’ fart as well? How does one train one’s body out of these natural functions?

How come you’re burping so much? For me and everyone I know burping is not a regular thing to this extent. Is there a medical issue? I assume so, so he should be cognisant of that.

I’m sorry I’ve never witnessed that, so disagree this is the case for most people. Everyone I know, work with, literally no one is sitting burping on the regular. Yes we all do it, but not to the extent the op is indicating

If you've asked him to stop and he keeps doing it then yes it's rude.

Yeah you can hold a fart in until you're somewhere more appropriate

On the face of it, it sounds mildly reproving - and yes saying it regularly would really wind me up.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say ‘excuse you’. I’m wondering if it’s something he’s made up, or a saying in his family, or whether it’s one of those regional things I learn about on MN!

You do it silently. You
burp with your mouth closed. You might inadvertently let out something loud occasionally, this is normal but should also be rare. By the way I think the OP's husband is being ironic, because he thinks his wife shoudn't burp in the first place.

Not in front of your partner or other family members.

I didn't specify where. I was discussing farts generally. There's a lot of people in my building who seem to think the lift is OK. Its not. Hold it til you get to the loo

Anyway I do think if this is a regular occurance it's worth speaking to the gp

Burping and farting is natural. I've never been able to hold a fart in in my life, and now I have a bowel disorder I definitely can't.

Luckily some of you are completely perfect in every way, and have never burped or farted in your lives. The pearl clutching on this thread is a joke!!

Sounds like he's admonishing you after every burp, which is a dick move.
