I never had any problems with my ears until four years ago when I got a really bad ear infection in my left ear. Since then I have had about ten infections all in the same ear which have been resolved with antibiotic drops. Anyway I went to the doctors at the beginning of the year because I've been deaf in that ear for a while and suspected wax buildup. The paramedic I saw confirmed that I needed it syringing but it couldn't be done for several weeks. I ended up paying for its own privately because it was itching so much and I couldn't hear out of it. I had it microsuctioned at the clinic but they said they couldn't get all the wax out so I had to go back two weeks later for irrigation.
After having all this done it felt better for about two weeks before feeling plugged up again. I went to the doctor a week ago to be told that I have a really bad infection and he can't even see inside my ear because it's so bad. He prescribed an oral antibiotic due to the fact he doesn't know what's going on inside my ear as it's so blocked. A week later and the antibiotics have not worked. He has prescribed another week of them. He said there's limited options because I can't tolerate penicillin.
I'm just really fed up with not been able to hear properly and I have a really bad tinnitus in that ear. It's very sore too. I'm wondering what can be done if the antibiotics haven't worked in yet another week. Haas anyone else been in this situation? Would a referral to an ENT be any use?
