Do I call DH’s work?

My husband is working night shifts the next few nights, and he finishes at 6am. I usually always hear from him if he is gonna be later but he’s just done a 12 hour night shift, it’s 10.30 and still isn’t back… I’ve checked trains and there isn’t a delay or any issues so I know he’s not stuck and if he didn’t get train he could get bus and no crashes on the roads. He would say if he’s staying longer.

He’s not replied to me from his work email and his phone is off.

I’m a bit worried as this is very unlike him. If he was going to be late he would always message. He works in the emergency services, but he still always has access to message me even if there’s an incident to tell if he’s gonna be late or something has happened and he has to stay.

would I look like a weirdo if I phone his work or do I leave it a while longer?

I called, he’s still at work! They said he’s staying until lunchtime, I’m a bit surprised as that means he’s worked over 18 hours…
I don’t know how he’ll manage night shift with barely any rest. Thanks everyone.

If there’s been a staff crisis and he stayed on maybe they will sort someone else for tonight. Otherwise he’ll be dangerously tired, surely?

He wont be back on duty tonight though surely, isn't the legal minimum 11 hrs between shifts? Emergency worker or not!

I'm pleased he's OK, OP, but the question needs to be asked: why didn't he call you because he must have known you'd be worried?

caringcarer · 28/03/2024 13:55

When my D's lived at home he was always home from work by 9pm. He'd always ring if there was a problem and he'd be late. One night he still wasn't home at 10.15pm. I tried ringing but nothing. I rang his work he'd broken down in a very rural location somewhere in Wales with no phone signal. He's a lorry driver so I always worry about an accident. He finally rang me at 11pm when a person arrived with a recovery vehicle and he moved into area with a signal. His work had phoned me 10 minutes before because they realised I'd be worried and knew no signal. I'd phone to set your mind at rest.

Working 18 hours straight. Well, that's illegal for a start.

You need to have a minimum break of 11 hours between the end of one shift and the start of the next.

He apologised when he got home. I know, he’s back in on nights this evening. I don’t know how he does it, he only had a few hours sleep. It’s tough as he’s barely here atm and his job is worry enough.
