DH over reacting about public fart

I don’t normally break wind and have very good manners. However, I experienced an unexpected fart whilst out shopping with my husband and son earlier. We were leaving the shop and approaching the car and I broke wind really loudly in the car park. I really didn’t mean to but it was incredibly loud and unfortunately a man happened to be walking right by me whilst returning his trolley and another couple in a nearby car turned as they were loading their shopping in the boot.

I quickly got into the car and stifled my laughter but as DH and son got in they looked very unimpressed. This was several hours ago and it’s still being brought up in conversation. I feel he has completely over reacted by being this shocked and disgusted.

surely it’s not that big a deal?

Car parks are great echo chambers 🤣
Your husband is straying into bullying territory if he continues to berate you.
He should never have berated you to start with!!
As for your son, I imagine he's copying his father. The whole Madonna/whore thing is not a great ideology for him to grow up with.....

I NC to admit I once made my mum puke when I farted. I thought the wretching was exaggeration so laughed more, farted a second time and had to hand my mum the bin to be sick in....
In my defence she had a very keen nose for smells that offended her (cooking smells etc) but yes, I felt awful.

Me too

Do you just mean you agree with him finding it unpleasant/embarrassing - or that you also agree with him humiliating and berating OP for it hours later?

Dearg · 28/03/2024 20:03

Oh dear god. Many years ago, my mum’s bowel surgeon asked her if she broke wind. She was horrified! But, as he explained it, if she didn’t it would indicate a blockage.
Embrace those farts people! I get that none of us want to do that in public, but a total absence, suggests blockage.

( And those of you think you don’t, I suggest you think about sleeping. )

Your husband is being a dick, OP. It’s not like you farted while curtsying to the King or some such.

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/03/2024 20:05

If my poor husband commented every time I broke wind it would be the only thing he had time to talk about.

RobertaFirmino · 28/03/2024 20:27

I think you should change your name by deed poll to Dolly Farton!

Seriously though, their po faces are not because you farted but because you are a woman who farted. I would make it my mission to break more wind.

Craftycorvid · 28/03/2024 20:33

Even Elizabeth the first appreciated a good fart! She is said to have greeted a courtier with the words ‘welcome! We had quite forgot the fart,’ when he dared to show his face at court having accidentally dropped one in the royal presence (and been too embarrassed to show his face for months).

Rosestulips · 28/03/2024 20:36

If you have an Alexa, ask her to fart. She has all kinds.

Tinysoxxx · 28/03/2024 20:37

Disgust is a very basic emotion. Finding farts funny as an adult involves the understanding of complex social etiquette.
OP he’s just less evolved and sophisticated than you.

Topseyt123 · 28/03/2024 20:39

I'd be interested to know whether and how often this has actually happened? It must have.

I need statistics, volume etc.

bojee · 28/03/2024 20:40

I farted in the supermarket once some guy had just walked up behind me and I just looked at him and shrugged, he laughed and he actually started flirting with me! I hope he wasn't some fart fetishist!

I can confirm that Alexa is indeed a brilliant farter.

We were away in a B&B in the Lakes one year and my husband was laid on the bed with his earphones in watching a film. I was in the en suite (with the door shut) and happened to have wind (I do have IBS). I let one rip and I heard my husband shout “what did you say?” He thought I’d spoken! Really made me giggle.

So did Henry II - he employed a man who was highly skilled at entertaining with the old bum trumpet, and paid him very handsomely for so doing!

OP this made me laugh.

But, serious note. That sounds loud. Do you need some probiotics?

Crazycrazylady · 29/03/2024 09:31

Honestly I totally get that one can slips out but to be that loud you must have really let rip and if my Dh did that in a public place I'd be annoyed by him.
Seems like I'm an outlier though. Confused

TheSolstices · 29/03/2024 09:38

I’m always fascinated by how British people seem to find farting so hilarious. I mean, the OP’s husband sounds a bit uptight in this scenario, but I’m more bemused by the people who find farting so earthshatteringly hilarious they’d have been guffawing in the car all the way home. Farts happen, but are they really that funny? Are they any funnier than a sneeze?

Probiotics? Just because - like everybody else in the world - she sometimes farts?!

Even the King farts too! He might be concerned about accidentally launching one in front of you - although he probably employs a servant specifically for the purpose of publicly taking the blame for his own windy episodes.

Francisflute · 29/03/2024 10:07

Say you deliberately did it outdoors rather than in the car as an act of love and consideration. Then berate him for not being more grateful. Two can play that game.

CheeryPye · 29/03/2024 10:30

I was once sat on a bench chatting with my friend on a trendy shopping street in no less than Buckhurst Hill. A builder came out of a nearby restaurant walking past us to his car with his wife behind who was nagging him all the way up the street.

As he got to the car he bent over and pointed his arse straight at her and farted as loud as he could then got in the car. We both burst out laughing and she went mad at him. As they drove past they both gave us evil stares for laughing

First time I ever witnessed a weaponised fart in public. PAAARP! Take that you nag! 😂😂

Mountainpika · 29/03/2024 10:44

I worked with children for years. Would have 20+ sitting on the floor in front of me. Then one would start sniffing, others would start sniffing and waving their hands in front of their noses and looking around. Often the looks would centre on one innocent-faced individual. Not a word would be said about it.

They really are that funny. 🤣🤣

As for the sneezing, well not particularly the sneezes themselves, but when someone sneezes and farts simultaneously that is hilarious. Quite a show. 🤣🤣

Redruby2020 · 29/03/2024 20:14

@Topseyt123 I'm glad you saw the funny side of it 😆 another poster thought it was actually appropriate to ask that of him.
