DH over reacting about public fart

I don’t normally break wind and have very good manners. However, I experienced an unexpected fart whilst out shopping with my husband and son earlier. We were leaving the shop and approaching the car and I broke wind really loudly in the car park. I really didn’t mean to but it was incredibly loud and unfortunately a man happened to be walking right by me whilst returning his trolley and another couple in a nearby car turned as they were loading their shopping in the boot.

I quickly got into the car and stifled my laughter but as DH and son got in they looked very unimpressed. This was several hours ago and it’s still being brought up in conversation. I feel he has completely over reacted by being this shocked and disgusted.

surely it’s not that big a deal?

I agree with DH. If that makes me lacking in fun I can live with that.

5128gap · 28/03/2024 09:37

Unless you're about 8, it's hardly the stuff of side splitting hilarity. It's just something that human bodies do, sometimes outside of our control. Your husband is wrong to be making a big deal out of it, but if people didn't act like children over it then it wouldn't be a thing in the first place. It would just be like sneezing.

CreateYourOwnUsername · 28/03/2024 09:38

It isn't something you could help. At least you were outside and it isn't as if you did it on purpose with leg lifted or shouting "silence please, here comes the breeze".

I'm not a massive fan of farts (awaits fanning farts jokes 😌), but they're part of life. Ridiculous to react like your dh.

ACynicalDad · 28/03/2024 09:44

If you did it in front of his mother and she was that type of person or his boss then maybe be a bit annoyed, still would be an over reaction, but it was in front of strangers it doesn't matter a bit.

Sheepcup · 28/03/2024 09:47

Is it actually possible to break wind "accidently" so loudly that a couple busy loading their car "nearby" would be distracted by it?

Shopper727 · 28/03/2024 09:51

I have lots of tummy problems that mean wind is common and I can’t help it, such fun!! Boyfriend pretends it’s him if we are out, obviously i don’t make it obvious if it can be helped but it’s embarrassing
for him, it’s a natural function they do creep up on you at times

LadyKenya · 28/03/2024 09:52

Thank you for the laugh OP. I never use the f word though, terribly vulgar.

That's a good man you've got there taking the L for you 😂

I doubt it but this is mumsnet and posters are already finding it the most " hilarious " thing ever, waking babies ,and spitting coffee out at the hilarity of it all ....

Yes. My mum once made such a cracker of a sound in a diy store, that the bloke stacking shelves the other side of the aisle came round to see what had happened; he thought something must have fallen down. My dad nearly gave the game away with his stifled laughter.

Noseyoldcow · 28/03/2024 10:03

And my aunt, caddying on the golf course for my uncle, let one rip and put someone right off their shot!

Marghogeth · 28/03/2024 10:19

On your wedding night was your husband surprised and repulsed by your public hair too? 😀

Farts are funny. The end.

I'm glad you said that! 😂

Yes. Perfectly possible. Fun when it happens too. 🤣

Redruby2020 · 28/03/2024 11:05

My ex bosses wife used to make him go in the bathroom to fart 😄😆

I actually think that’s fair enough, if you can feel it coming and you’re going to make a stink then you should have the courtesy of going to the toilet - totally different if it’s unexpected and couldn’t be stopped.

Whatifthehokeycokey · 28/03/2024 11:08

Some men think women should be china dolls, without any bodily functions. They don't hold the same standards for themselves.

CactusMactus · 28/03/2024 11:16

My family would fall about laughing.... They would honestly think it was the funniest thing ever and probably try to squeeze a few out themselves in the car!
My DD loves to sit on us and fart
(God... we're gross!)

Noooo! She should hold farting competitions with him. That's what my parents used to do. 🤣

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/03/2024 11:18

These things happen - they need to get a grip and see the funny side.

Years ago (well before I was prone to age-related ‘muscle weakness’) I was in a cafe at Heathrow, waiting to meet dh. At one point I got up to check the arrivals board - the floor on the aisle between two rows of tables was wet - I slipped badly and - as my DF so quaintly used to put it - very nearly went arse over breakfast-time. And at the same time, let out a massive, very noisy fart. The tables close by were all fully occupied!

How I recovered myself and managed to exit with some sort of aplomb I will never know!

Deadringer · 28/03/2024 11:19

Tell him if he mentions it again you will save them all up for the next time you are out together.

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 28/03/2024 11:21

Well it made me laugh x

Tell me you’re not pregnant or perimenopausal without telling me your not pregnant or perimenopausal

LakeTiticaca · 28/03/2024 11:38

OP, If the fart was so loud that it was heard across a carpark, I conclude that it wasn't an accident. You knew it was going to a ripper so you forced it out 🤣🤣

HesterRoon · 28/03/2024 11:42

Oh God, total overreaction from him, obviously an accident. But why does everyone seem to find farting hilarious and crying with laughter??
