Am I missing something? Why are we not more angry about the NHS agenda for change pay rise 2024/25?

The NHS pay rise is supposed to be announced September before it comes in. Government didn’t start the independent review until November (I think), and it’s still not been announced. They’re saying we’ll get back pay in September (but that messes people up who are on UC).

No one seems to be mentioning it even.

It is never settled for April. We're lucky if it's done and in by September. Same every single year

CormorantStrikesBack · 27/03/2024 20:27

And while this happens MPs got 5.5%, higher than consumer price index inflation.

dreamfield · 27/03/2024 20:28

"we" who?

There are quite a lot of things one could be angry about at a given time, maybe people don't have the energy.

NotSmallButFunSize · 27/03/2024 20:32

I'm pissed off about it but what can you do? It messes up my student loan to get lump sums of back pay, does my head in - April occurs at the same time every year so why the hell did they not prepare in time.
The whole system is a shit show - band 2 pays 1p over minimum wage, the pay across the board is abysmal.

NHS employees on agenda for change. Most of us.

we usually have a proposal so we know the minimum but if they’ve not got to that, will we even see it in September?

This happens every year in local government. Usually not agreed until Nov with then a back pay which, as you say, messes up UC.

curlycat · 27/03/2024 21:22

@TeenLifeMum I can't see it being anything decent anyway. Between what they gave us last year and the half hour cut to the working week they will try to give us as little as possible

Taylia · 27/03/2024 21:25

we should have received the request letter in Autumn to allow time to go through the PRB process but they were 4 weeks later than last year!

“The letter was due to be issued in the autumn and has been sent four weeks later than last year. This means a pay rise for NHS nursing staff in 2024 will inevitably come later than April, which is when it’s due. The PRB has been asked to report its findings in May. “

Who got a half hour cut to the week? I work 37.5 and have for 9 years. Did I miss that?

my only slight glimmer is that it’s an election year and they are talking about it being in October so a big nhs pay rise could be their vote winner? It’ll be a bullshit tactic but I won’t knock it. Quite frankly, any increase is better than nothing.

Reduced hours are scotland only I think and they also have a separate pay scale and more pay @TeenLifeMum . TBH I'll be amazed if its paid in September or even October. I think the delay is.so they can miss a year. ie say we've paid it in November. So can't star next year's until December/Jan. In.my opinion all public sector workers should get the same percentage rise as MP'S who are.also public sector. Not a chance of that though

In Scotland we are getting a reduced working week to 36.0 hours as WTE. We are reducing by 30 mins a year from 1/4/24 to 1/4/26. It was part of our deal that we got in our pay and terms and conditions negotiations last year.

NImumconfused · 27/03/2024 23:28

We haven't even got the 23-24 one yet!

But we usually work more than our hours - about 30 minutes minimum a day so it’s just an on paper thing. As we get paid hourly, is that a pay cut? Sorry, that’s a new one to me.

I don't know what's going on with the NHS but the govt were late with submitting their evidence to the teacher independent pay review body this year too, and when they did what they suggested was crap, 1-2%.

chocolaterevs · 29/03/2024 08:17

So angry about it. My calculations show our band 4 staff for the foreseeable future will be paid less than Lidl and only slightly more than Aldi. I find this incredibly disrespectful to their qualifications and skills, and that is not to say that working in a supermarket isn't hard. Years of study and stress, for what?

Why are they making it so undesirable for UK staff to work for the nhs, then hiring staff from overseas? Taking staff from countries who need medical staff themselves. Bringing in overseas staff puts more stress/demand on our housing market too.

What a mess.

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 12:53

@chocolaterevs when Aldi opened in town we lost 19 HCAs in the same week because they all got jobs there! Pay and conditions were so much better than night shifts and poor pay.

This does not surprise me at all. Quite right! How did you manage when that many HCAs left??!

I really don't understand why more people aren't up in arms about it. Are band 2-4 supposed to be grateful that they have a foot in the door with the potential for higher banding later in their life? I must be missing something. How can the pay be justified.

When do we think any pay increase will be announced? Some people are talking about Sept! So band 2s get £11.44 from next week and the bands spend months wondering if they will be uplifted by much at all. I couldn't blame band 3s and above if they walked out.

Weegieunicorn · 30/03/2024 09:17

In Scotland we will reduce to 36 hours a week, same pay. If we can't make the reduction, we will be paid for the 1.5 hours. Its interesting as a band 6 in the community, the band 3 staff who work in the inpatient wards walk out with the same monthly pay if they do an overtime shift and some nights.

TeenLifeMum · 30/03/2024 09:30

@Weegieunicorn i can’t quite get my head around the Scotland deal because I’m in England and my pay is calculated hourly. We’re mostly working 40 hours a week with no additional pay anyway so it feels like a soundbite policy to me. I’m very cynical these days 😂

@chocolaterevs it was a total shitshow if I’m honest and the agency costs went up.

They may be delaying to avoid more strikes around an election. It'll be political whatever they are doing. Teachers got offered a pathetic amount against what mps did. I'm not hopeful this side of autumn or for it to be worthwhile

Not AfC as I'm in GP practice, but government announced last June I think that they were funding a 6% increase for us for 23/24. We haven't seen a penny of it yet, despite apparently the government sending the rest of the funding in November. The way it was calculated means some practices could afford to do the full 6% and others couldn't.
