Do your work colleagues actually know it's Easter this weekend and that Friday and Monday are Bank Holidays?

After some recent emails and conversations, I think some people just don't know. Maybe they are just out of the loop on these things.

Absolutely know and try book it off every year, as get 10 consecutive days off, for 4 days annual leave

A few people in my office hadn't remembered, many also didn't know it is clock change over the weekend too.

Edited

So I've just checked that as well!!

Depends where you are, maybe? Local to me, most office workers get bank holidays as "floating days" and hardly anyone takes Easter off, unless it coincides with time they would be taking off for school holidays anyway. Often, schools are even in on Easter Monday.

At work, we wouldn't think twice about arranging meetings on Easter friday/monday, and that goes for everywhere I have ever worked, including clients.

Where are you?

I thought it was pretty standard in the UK for offices to close down over bank holidays? Certainly every where I've ever worked.

Boopear · 26/03/2024 20:21

My poor US team mates don't get either off. I was😮!

OkPedro · 26/03/2024 20:21

And the clocks are changing 🥳

Aberdeen. It's not even a bank holiday here on the Monday. And even the council had to add an extra day onto the school year at short notice just before Christmas as they forgot that teachers contractually need a day off on Easter Friday 😂, and they had originally planned to be in.

I have a 3-hour meeting on a client site on Friday. Totally normal here.

Clocks going
forward.

PatFussy · 26/03/2024 20:37

I forgot but I'm in retail so normal weekend for me.

where do you live? I've never heard of a school being in on easter, and everywhere I've ever worked they are clear bank holidays that you can't book meetings over, because nobody will be there! this despite the workplace otherwise being completely flexible in terms of annual life, flexitime etc

JazzTheDog · 26/03/2024 20:38

Also Aberdeenshire and have worked in offices, care and the NHS and never had Good Friday as a public holiday.

We do get Easter Monday as a holiday though.

Edited to add that I have a full patient list for Friday as it's just a normal working day for us.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 26/03/2024 20:39

No, but that's because the majority of my colleagues are in the US and it's not a public holiday so I have to keep reminding them I'm not available Friday and Monday, I've put it in my signature and I've blocked out my calendar. Still getting meeting invites though 😂

Sagarmatha · 26/03/2024 20:40

Don't forget clocks go forward this weekend too!

Which retail is open on Easter Sunday? Aee you in England?

snoopyfanaccountant · 26/03/2024 20:43

I think what confuses things is that for those of us in Scotland, a bank holiday doesn't always equate to a public holiday; it just means that the banks are shut. The August bank holiday (whether it's the first Monday in August as listed by the Scottish government or the last Monday when the banks actually close) and St Andrews day are normal working days for the majority of the population (some council areas take St Andrews Day as a holiday but only a few).

Small shops/businesses are allowed to be open on Easter Sunday. For many of them it is an important business day.

Londonrach1 · 26/03/2024 20:46

It's come around too early this year

Squirrelblanket · 26/03/2024 20:47

Yes, of course they know. 😂

I have known for a while that it's Easter this next weekend but it came as a bit of a shock to learn that the clocks also change on Saturday night/Sunday morning, have to be up an hour earlier.

Yes, and there are different "local bank holidays" between different council areas, just to confuse things. It's no wonder people don't even know when they are.

I do think it's all fairly irrelevant in most of Scotland unless you work for a bank or the council though.

I can guarantee someone won’t have realised, same person will be fuming that Tesco is closed on Sunday

In Ireland Tesco is open Easter Sunday.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 26/03/2024 20:59

Whaaaaat!!!!!

Everybody I know is aware it's a Bank Holiday this weekend - we've been looking forward to these 4-5 days off since Christmas!

How can they not know? I teach international students .. they know.

Why would international students knowing it’s Easter, mean the natives of this country must know. Do the students have different calendars in their country of origin?

My (mostly Chinese) students live in their own bubble and aren’t that aware of British customs. They don’t use an English calendar, theirs is on their laptop in Chinese, so no bank holidays are on it. All their devices are in their native language.

LlynTegid · 26/03/2024 21:46

I'm sure all of them do.

As for the date being a surprise, perhaps given that many people don't have a paper diary or calendar, could be part of the reason.
