Should I bin my friend's art?

My friend painted me a picture. The sentiment was lovely but I really hate it. It's not my taste and not in keeping with my house. I keep it behind the TV and hang it whenever she comes to visit so I don't hurt her feelings as she is really proud of this piece and spent many weeks making it. I'm moving to a new house and I don't want to be carrying things that I don't like or want to my new home. I want to take the frame and bin the actual painting. She's a good friend and she is likely to visit and possibly ask where the art is.

AIBU to put the painting in the bin?

I am aware it's a joke, but still ask who would hang it in their home?

Fictional characters on a TV show 🙄. Lord alive.

tearsintherain · 26/03/2024 12:20

Tell her one of your DC had a bad dream about the painting, and although you like it and appreciate the time and effort she put into it, you really think it would be best if she took it back.
One of mine when they were little was scared of a particular painting (nothing that would jump out as being obviously scary or traumatising, but they clearly saw something in it that we didn't).

PossumintheHouse · 26/03/2024 12:23

This thread has cheered me up no end. Good old Gladys. I feel sorry for Glynnis though, who has undeservedly had no mention on this thread.

OP, don't chuck it. I'd appreciate the sentiment at least. Bung it up in the loft and if she asks, say you haven't decided where it'll go yet. And also point out that it's sad you don't have enough wall space to buy any new works of art EVER.

fatphalange · 26/03/2024 12:29

Wanting to take the frame with you but bin what's in it is savage 😂
Honestly, if you're bothering to take the frame anyway, there's no harm in keeping the picture. Just put one you prefer on top of it. If she comes to visit, you could always remove the picture that's on top until she's gone home.

Pics or we can’t advise.

She did pics ages back and apparently it turned out it's a picture from an episode of Friends.

Op, do you actually own a painting that your friend gifted you or is your whole Aibu a joke?

LlynTegid · 26/03/2024 12:33

Is it too much to continue the pretence, just have it in a different room in the new house so you don't have to look at it. Spare bedroom if you have one perhaps?

OP didn't post the Friends picture - it was another poster who, realising the similarity of what is happening with OP to a plotline in an episode of Friends, posted the Friends picture for a joke.

Here it is

That's nightmarish.
That would freak anyone out.

I'd say it got damaged.

I did an etching of a dog once, in an etching class, and offered one to Mum for free -Mum said ''No thanks'' as it wasn't her type of thing.

{She likes cats}

A small dog etching isn't anything like as hard to live with as a bizarre human form climbing out of its frame.

Edit...It now transpires that the creepy pic isn't the one that OP owns.

The. OP. Did. Not. Post. A. Photo. Of. The. Artwork.

It was a joke by another poster.

Bloody hell, OP DIDN'T POST THE PICTURE!! OP POSTS ARE GREEN. WE HAVE NOT SEEN THE ARTWORK!

What has happened on this thread? I feel like I'm in a parallel universe 😂

@SmallIslander it's upthread...if you dare!

@Joyjazz I'm sorry but I wouldn't like that on my wall either

That's not the painting that's from another user.

@RicePuddingWithCinnamon is not @Joyjazz

Bumblebeeinatree · 26/03/2024 12:37

If you have one put it in the spare bedroom, she can look at it if she stays over. It is at least a talking point not just another vacuous print.

PossumintheHouse · 26/03/2024 12:41

For those who are confused, here is an actual photo of the OP with the artwork in question.

It's very bizarre and unusual that there are quite so many confused and bewildered posters on a thread. Sometimes there may be one or two who are skim-reading/not paying attention but on this thread there are loads of them! 😕

Grin Now you're gonna have people even more puzzled! OP has already been reported for doing nothing wrong 😂

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 26/03/2024 12:50

I like the idea of linking the painting to a very specific (limited) date or occasion.

If she asks, insist to her that it brings back such amazing memories of that glorious night when you both first met, all those years ago on 29th February, that you so love the excitement and anticipation of hanging the painting up in its special place and weeping with joy as you view it, every time that very special date comes around.

I'm sorry. I'm justifying it as a social experiment. 👹

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 26/03/2024 12:56

I realise that love of art is utterly individual, and its enjoyment fiercely personal; but I can't think there is ANY special piece that somebody has carefully and skilfully toiled over for hours, days, weeks that doesn't thus automatically earn the right to be considered objectively a work of beauty for all and forever.

Should I bin my friend's art?
StockpotSoup · 26/03/2024 13:04

To explain it in the form of a haiku:

The friend’s art is shit
The Friends art is from TV
That’s the difference.

ChurchOfSeitan · 26/03/2024 13:43

To be fair when I saw that picture and saw it wasn’t the OP I just assumed they had a name change fail (never watched Friends). It wasn’t until someone pointed it out (fairly quickly I might add) that I realised 😂
