i'm trying in vain to find a flight from anywhere in the uk to alicante or murcia in spain for a week in august. every flight i have found is going to cost me over £1000 (2 adults 1 child, 1 baby) and is on some budget no frills airline where they won't even put any bags in the hold, let alone buggy's etc.

what has happened to flying? i'm sure you used to be able to fly with an airline, each put in 20kilos of baggage and a pushchair and not have to pay extra for the priviledge.

Know exactly what you mean!! We just got a reasonably good deal with XL Airways. We go to Rhodes, Greece. The flight prices are terrifying - its a 4hour + flight from Manchester. Cause we are going in July some of the quotes we got made me run and hide behind the sofa.

Give XL a try.

I think the problem is August. Probably much cheaper in September!

I agree that recently it has got much more expensive

shabster · 28/03/2008 07:49

....and dont even mention the rubbish exchange rate!!

beautifuldays · 28/03/2008 08:08

just tried october for comparison and that was the same price!!

why don't airlines carry your bags any more ffs?

Try other airlines, they are plenty of them... how about Jet2, Monarch, and above all Easy Jet? Now, some flexibility in the dates is absolutely essential...

MeMySonAndI · 28/03/2008 08:17

And avoid BMI baby and Ryan Air as the plague, they break the fares in so many small pieces just to make you think you are flying for peanuts and you may end up paying as much as by using Iberia or BA

beautifuldays · 28/03/2008 08:21

i have tried every airline i can think of
BA, iberia, easyjet, monarch, bmi baby, ryanair etc etc etc

it is not possible for under £1000!
i give up, will go to devon instead....

Try the flightchecker on Moneysavingextra

I've just checked and got flights out from Gatwick on 1st Aug, back on 15th Aug for the 4 of you, with meals and one piece of luggage each for £666 with Thomsonfly. I looked for flights under £250 each and there were loads. Yes there are separate charges for luggage and meals, but still not that expensive.

Have you tried searching through expedia?

I just came back with Thompson last night, they charge £10 per bag in the hold.

This wasn't a problem for me as my dad was travelling overland in Jan - so just packed uneeded summer clothes for two in holdall and sent with him. Left luggage with him to bring home overland.

When I got on the plane though I realised that everyone had gone way over the handluggage size 50cm x 20cm x 40cm and I could have packed two small holdalls for me and dd and taken on as hand luggage!

If there are 3 of you baby isn't allowed hand luggage! then take three bags on the plane with you and just put one in the hold?
