Sick of wasting my life because of the rain

GoodnightAdeline · 24/03/2024 19:18

I don’t care how many people say ‘it was always like this..’ yes it rained a lot when I was a kid but now it does nothing BUT rain.

I swear to God out of the last 30 days we have had 1 or maybe 2 where it wasn’t fucking raining. And they’re always midweek.

I feel like all we do is sit inside going stir crazy waiting for the rain to stop. I have 2 small children and while they’re desperate to go to the park/beach, even they’re not keen in a torrential downpour with everything covered in mud.

I’m sick of all my plans being cancelled, staring out of the window at depressing grey skies and trying to figure out how to pass the weekend without spending a ton of cash on expensive (and brief) indoor activities.

It’s driving me fucking crazy and not an exaggeration to say it’s sending me into some kind of low level depression. 🍷

You're properly bonkers 😂

Maybe? But I can hold a brolly and push a pram. Quite the multitasker

I know it’s miserable but just prep for it OP. Waterproofs, wellies, towels and a spare pair of clothes by the door for when you get the kids in then big mugs of hot chocolate and a movie.

if I stayed in during the rain we’d never do anything. Let the kids get muddy and jump in puddles.

Or tea, OP. There are other preferences.

Motherproblem101 · 24/03/2024 22:50

Totally agree.

The rain is making me so miserable.

It's my birthday today. It's cold and wet. In 2022, I spent my birthday sun bathing in the garden.

It's definitely raining far more (as all the PPs have said, providing stats to prove), and it is miserable. Utterly miserable.

No, I don't want to go out in the rain. I don't want to wear wellies or a rain coat. I don't want to get wet and cold or be covered in mud. None of the lists of things to do posted by PPs are fun to do in the rain.

And as a glasses wearer, I'm sick of not being able to see because my glasses are covered in water.

I hate it. I don't mind the cold so much. But I hate the rain.

It’s typical for this time of year. DD has an early April birthday so it’s always unpredictable as to what sort she’ll get! We’ve had sunny ones in the garden and blizzard ones huddled inside. It’s not unusual at all.

As for the glasses issue, contact lenses are life changing

EatingTillIDie · 24/03/2024 22:52

People are so angry on this post! Never mind it, get some chocolate eggs in yer bellies

WildBear · 24/03/2024 22:53

I feel the same. Weather is pretty shit from November - March, that's 5/12 months of the year, nearly half our lives!! I wish I had a solution because it's miserable really.

mamacorn1 · 24/03/2024 22:53

I’m with you OP. Frankly it’s getting depressing having so much grey sky for so long.

No such thing as bad weather. Only bad choice of clothing.

Waterproofs and wellies on and out to stomp op.

We go to the woods and make dens

We go for a walk to feed the ducks

We go for bike rides and plan to come back as muddy as possible lol

We go for a walk to lidl, pick up lunch from the bakery and sit by the canal to eat it with brollies and waterproofs on.

We go on scavenger hunts

We go out and measure things (yes random I know but for some reason they think it's hilarious 😂)

We take our walkie talkies and play hide and seek in the woods.

We put the tent up in the garden and fill it with warm blankets and cushions and:

We play card games

We do jigsaws

We have movie afternoons

We do campfire cooking

We do wood craft

Haha, my crew are very keen on measuring things too. Sometimes we take a clipboard to note it all down… 🤷🏼‍♀️😆

Love this, especially going out measuring things🥹

The only solution is to move away. What you are experiencing is simply the climate of the UK.

soz that people are not putting up and shutting up aka cracking the fuck on, in the way you think we all should

Yeah, I know. I remember snow on my birthday one year. (Although it definitely is raining more than normal but I'm aware that at this time of year, the weather is very changeable anyway.)

But the sunbathing years are the best.

Wetblanket78 · 24/03/2024 22:57

Jeannie88 · 24/03/2024 22:48

It's not ideal at all but we've had fun (for a short time getting drenched then heating on in car) going out in the rain and slopping about in wellies and waterproofs. Playing in parks all to ourselves on wet swings! Yes a faff on but for young kids It's fun, you don't have to do it every day, just go out and do it. Quite refreshing really lol 😆

Mine are older now but they have SEN. Some of our best trips to the park was when it was drizzling. Usually had the whole park to ourselves and could laugh at me having a go on the zip wire and swings.🤣🤣🤣

penjil · 24/03/2024 22:57

I hear you, OP.

At least if we had snow, we could do skiing, tobogganing, ice skating, etc. like other northern European countries.

The USA has many public indoor running tracks, so athletics, joggers and walkers are sorted there.

But rain, nope. There's nothing you can do but get wet or wear a plastic mac.

I need to majorly sort out the boot of my car, but I haven't been able to do it for 3 weeks, as every day that I'm off work, it has rained. 😨

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/03/2024 22:57

Winter does seem to have been LONG this year!

We just have to play dodge the rain, check the forecast and hope for the best 🤞🏼I agree it's really shit, but I can't justify wasting my life away because of it, and hopefully it'll only be for another month and we'll be good for a while.

I also agree with indoor activities, they're expensive, packed and full of germs 🤣 hard pass!

MaisieMacabe · 24/03/2024 22:57

I must be lucky! I live in Derbyshire and it's been gorgeous today! Bright sunshine and dry. Same most of the week. We must get different weather!

What is the other solution then? No amount of complaining is going to change the fact that the UK lies within a temperate oceanic climate. It will be mild and wet no matter what.

Putting up and shutting up for months on end is soul destroying.....

DragonScreeches · 24/03/2024 22:58

For everyone saying that they haven't noticed the endless rain:

February was a wetter than average month, with the south of England experiencing its wettest February since the series began in 1836. Many parts of southern England recorded well over twice the average rainfall.

England recorded its fourth wettest February on record although February 2020 was much wetter.

Warmest February on record for England and Wales

England and Wales had their respective warmest Februarys on record according to provisional Met Office statistics in what was a mild and wet month for many.

BlueBadgeHolder · 24/03/2024 22:59

I agree it is raining almost constantly. And no it is not normally like this. All the ground is water logged.

WrenNatsworthy · 24/03/2024 23:00

I just got out of hospital. I thought I might die there. I can't go out yet, but I can look out of the window. I'm so happy I can see the Spring coming, rain or shine.

Don't wish your life away because of the weather OP.

DodoTired · 24/03/2024 23:00

DragonScreeches · 24/03/2024 22:50

I would rather snow than rain!

It’s probably because you imagine snow like it is during ski holidays.

its not like that when you live in a big city and it snows for months. Its also constantly gloomy so no sunshine; the snow turns into muddy slush on the ground, every where, so your shoes and bottom of trousers are wet and ruined; it melts on your face and clothing so you are still wet as if it rained etc etc
UGH

This. Nothing makes you more grateful for the freedom of being able to spend time outdoors than a hospital stay.

Well, we'll all just have to be depressed and have alcohol problems like they have in other isolated, damp, wet countries.....Iceland, Greenland, Finland etc.

EatCrow · 24/03/2024 23:01

BernardBlacksBreakfastWine · 24/03/2024 22:49

Totally with you OP. I fucking hate the rain!

Of course there’s good weather and bad weather! Just because some dickhead once said something about unsuitable clothing, we’re still all capable of discerning what feels good and what doesn’t!

Scenario A: you fancy a trip to the park with your toddler. You pack a snack possibly and a bottle of water and off you trot! Have a lovely time on the equipment, run round on the grass, maybe feel a bit of sunshine on your face 😊Come home, take off shoes - relax.

Scenario B: you fancy a trip to the park; it’s fucking raining but you decide to crack the fuck on because, you know, mumsnet.
You deck your kid up in a puddle suit and wellies. Great! Then he needs the loo just before you leave, so you unwrap him and start again. At the park, rain trickles down his face and makes him mad. You explain that there is no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing. He looks at you pityingly. He slips trying to scale a dripping wet climbing frame and screams. You are freezing. The grass is like the Somme. Everything is covered in mud. You try to improve the situation by offering the kid a snack. It turns soggy in his hands. He looks at you accusingly and dares you to try that line about ‘unsuitable clothing’ again. You decide you’ve had enough bracing outdoor fun and head home. Once home, you cannot blithely enter your property; you have to stand about hopping on the threshold for fear of treading mud through the house. Everyone must disrobe immediately and put all muddy items in the washing machine. Washing on a rainy day is especially shit and you curse your energy bill as you contemplate radiators and tumble dryer. You get a little stick and start scraping mud out of the bottom of you kid’s wellies. You look sadly at the window as the rain mimics your toddler’s tears.

See if you can guess which scenario is ‘good’ weather and which is ‘bad’!

Hah! Realism. Don’t forget the 5 minute shower which includes you and your children, undressing, showering, drying, dressing again and wiping up the bathroom.

And shaving your legs.
