AIBU to feel that some parents just want their children at Uni even if its a BS degree

Hello
I come from a background/culture where education is seen as very important and going to a university is a must (My parents came to England in 1962)

Yes, more and more jobs are seeking degrees and often even when not necessary. There are many professions where you must have a degree to join the course training

However, what I and my family call BS degrees, to name but a few

Arts
Studio Fine arts
Arth History
Business studies
Exercise Science
Fashion

I cant see what jobs they will get as there must be other routes, less intensive and extensive to get the job they want

When I've talked about mickey-mouse degrees at parties etc and not be aware that some parents children or they may have studied them, they start to defend the indefensible.
The biggest bS degree is 'Politics' - WTH!! Sadly, we know a few people whose children have done that and ended up running the family shop/business - total waste of a degree

There are other degrees just as crappy - they should be banned IMO

AIBU to think these degrees are a waste of time and often do not aid the person into a job in that field?

What degree do you have op? You keep avoiding that question

I believe she has a doctorate in The Princess of Wales, specifically her health judging by the volume of threads she starts

Newcastle and Liverpool are Russell Group unis. You are just making yourself look stupid.

Please stop being dilberately ovtuse as you know I was talking about job ops in those areas are few and far between. /therefore best to get a decent degree where there were jobs locally

Did you not get taught that punctation is a vital part of writing clearly and effectively?

DanielGault · 19/03/2024 23:52

DM article in support of OP's views. That's me convinced anyway 😂

I'll never understand whay so many people envy the DM

Are you saying the link I posted is not factual re 'Media studies?

The DM has a right wing stance and not for me, but I like to read what the right is on about as well as the centre, left and the ordinary man/woman on the street

Nothing in dirty old Liverpool either with their perms and Giros - I mean there’s the Tate and such but really it’s a cultural wasteland

I think it's the study of northern kitchens 1700-1950 when people gathered round the arth?

Not going to quote OP or any on their posts. I don't think I've ever read anything so fucking rude.

ghostyslovesheets · 19/03/2024 23:59

And Stoke - meh any one would think it’s the world capital of ceramics … oh wait it is!

You're not being unreasonable about pointless crappy degrees, but most of the degrees you listed are not examples of that, at all. Exercise science is even a STEM subject, that often leads to careers directly related to it!

The only one I'm dubious about on your list is Fashion, but that may be because I know little about it.

I do think people should stick to degrees where it will clearly be needed and useful in future employment (and help you make a worthwhile contribution to society). So although art history is valid, I can't see the point unless you specifically want to be an art teacher, or gallery curator etc. STEM, law, and vocational degrees are usually best.

Of the well known subjects, I think Philosophy is a pretentious load of wank. There's plenty that fit your criteria, like Media Studies, Creative Writing, Gender Studies, etc.

Astonetogo · 20/03/2024 00:00

You are very narrow - minded for a supposed graduate.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/03/2024 00:02

In fact my first ever job was in an art shop on Bold Street, Liverpool and it was quite busy!

You are the one who is being deliberately obtuse!!! My DC1 had no problem getting 2 1 year contracts before getting a permanent FT position back home! What is actually wrong with you?!

Naptimeagain · 19/03/2024 22:14

I suspect the OP went to the Univesity of Life, but sadly failed the grammar exam.

Failed the entire degree

Runnerinthenight · 20/03/2024 00:08

I doubt very much that the OP ever went to uni, taking her utter ignorance into account, never mind her poor English!

Astonetogo · 20/03/2024 00:09

Arts degrees and other “crappy” subjects have only become so since education became commercialised. These days you have to have a degree to get a well paid job, and there are significant fees / debts to pay up front. Education has become a financial investment, and I find that very sad and a sign of an ailing society.
Subjects such as philosophy might not lead directly to a lucrative career but they are far from useless, have you ever stopped to wonder why ‘The Humanities’ are so-called?
Wealth does not equal wisdom or enlightenment, or do we not value those qualities any more? I suppose not, America is looking at a second Trump presidency after all. No wonder our society is going down the pan.

Signed, a budding anti-capitalist

I was a bit dubious of Fashion until DC2 took a degree in it. It's literally the only thing they have ever been passionate about. Got three amazing placements in 3rd year with well-known names. Was head-hunted to study for a Masters in a highly prestigious European uni. Have every faith and confidence that they will be successful.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 19/03/2024 22:30

I too can swear but its not my style. I was taught by my parents and this was reinforced at school and uni, to "swear. it shows you've lost the debate/argument."

Interesting. Presumably Harvard is the kind of university your insufferable family would respect? A Harvard study, along with many others over the years, has shown a correlation between swearing and intelligence.

maddening · 20/03/2024 00:17

While I agree that there are bs degrees I disagree with the inclusion of fine and applied arts - the experience of an artistic melting pot that you have with a college of art and access to equipment, tools and lecturer/tutors and opportunities to try different disciplines was an amazing experience.

DiscoBeat · 20/03/2024 00:21

For someone who is goading about a 'BS degree' you sure seem to have a degree in bullshit.

Codlingmoths · 20/03/2024 00:22

My arts degree has contributed directly to my career success, and my fellow students appear to have experienced similar. But, paid employment is not the sole purpose of study. If I go back and do a PhD it will be because I have an idea I’m passionate enough about to spend years working on it, not because it would get me a higher paid job. I won’t go on as I don’t think there is any point in explaining the benefit of the liberal arts to the op. A little introduction to writing skills however wouldn’t go amiss.

A few times in pp the OP mentioned how the majority of her family and friends and people s/he knows agree that the degrees, as listed in the Op, are BS degrees.

Hmm, let’s consider that in comparison to the AIBU vote. At the time of my post there are 389 votes. 86% voted YABU (they disagree with the OP), 14% voted YANBU, (they agree with the OP).

So far the majority of 389 people who voted disagree with the OP.

(On a side note in one pp the Op condemned a pp for their use of a swear word and claimed it invalidated their opinion. Hypocrisy? Does not BS degree mean bullshit degree. Shortening it to BS does not prevent it from being a swear word. Op you used swearing yourself you are no better than anyone else).
