Obviously the answer to this is to tell your H that you look forward to him demonstrating how he can do it better.

Mytholmroyd · 18/03/2024 11:26

It was such a relief when my two youngest decided wearing odd socks was cool! I just let it all go and no longer pair them up!

No idea where they all go though.

thatgirlinjapan · 18/03/2024 10:00

Don't they go to sock land on the other side of the washing machine?

My mum said that's where all socks go 🫠

Every washing machine contains a portal to Narnia, where all socks end up living in eternal sunshine with Aslan the lion and Mr Tunmus the faun.

Dahliasrule · 18/03/2024 11:26

Yes, three of us in the house now wear size 4-7 so am going to buy loads of black ones and keep ina basket available for all. DH always buys the same grey socks but when they wash they seem to become varying colours of grey so I still have to match them. ( I do the laundry, DH does the cooking before anyone says he should sort out his own socks)

Smartiepants79 · 18/03/2024 11:29

We have this in our house. Weirdly MY socks never go missing and I’ve always got pairs!
Everyone else’s however….

DefenestratingZebra · 18/03/2024 11:31

One of the things about having lots of children very quickly is that you can just have "family socks" - they used to have the same school socks shared evenly.

Our current issue is pants - DH and our 3DSs all wear the same size and style of pants. I thought I'd cracked it by giving them all different animals but now I have to wear my glasses to tell the difference between teeny dogs and horses.

So if the teaspoons and forks are running off together is that where baby sporks come from?

I won't confirm or deny that until I know if I have a pay CM (cutlery maintenence) for any resulting sporks 🤣

Moofart · 18/03/2024 10:28

If I could show you the huge bag of miscellaneous socks we have you'd see how you're not alone. Not sure why your husband sees it as your responsibility!

I thought I was the only one! I finally got round to pairing some of them while listening to my audiobook. I never realised I had so maybe pairs of socks although many are still awaiting a mate

I think socks disappear into that special vortex that teaspoons also go to

Yes!

Rainynight09 · 18/03/2024 11:45

I just buy black socks now or wear odd socks under my boots

Jamesblema · 18/03/2024 12:07

Ugh, yes this is me! DH only buys the same socks so it’s not a problem for him. Me and the kids have many many hundreds of socks.

My most recent (and arguably best) system is to sort them into colours, pair up what I can, then keep the odd socks in bags of separate colours. So when there are odd socks in the clean washing I add them to the correct colour bag and then do a pairing every couple of weeks.

mumda · 18/03/2024 12:11

Socks disappear (only half a pair though) and come back as coat hangers.

DappledThings · 18/03/2024 12:12

I put socks in the machine in pairs and from the washing machine to the dryer/line in pairs and then actually put back together as a pair before going back in the drawer. I like checking them 😂

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 18/03/2024 12:19

I’ve got a peg board by the washing machine - odd socks go on that then get paired as soon as their partner appears (usually a wash or 2 later). Once the board is full, the socks that have been on it the longest get binned as obviously their partner has left never to return.

It’s a very efficient system and I never have odd socks hanging around anymore.

I also have a well-trained family who understand the importance of using their laundry baskets properly.

They should make a horror movie about that. They could have a scene like in the movie Killer Bees where she goes in the attic but instead of a hive she discovers rows and rows of single socks hanging from the beams, some of them almost ready to hatch out as hangers.

I would pay to watch it.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/03/2024 12:48

I find odd socks in the corners of duvet covers when I turn them right side out. Under beds or sofa and inside shoes.
DD puts them in the basket one at a time, same as pyjamas…
The dog has a fixation for moving socks into the corridor.

There is one holding area for odd socks, only pairs go back in drawers.
I currently have 8 or 10 orphans.
If I had more I might put them on a separate whirligig or one of those cutesy pegboard signs “Clean, single and looking for a partner”.

I once saw a Christmas tree in a launderette with odd socks instead of baubles.

I remember years ago bil and family staying here and a huge search going on about a missing sock. It was fair enough as apparently he ‘invests’ in very good socks but it was very csi and they constantly rang us afterwards asking had it turned up so we thought they were a little mad! Back then the kids were closer in size so we basically just always had cheap black socks and it wasn’t until people starting asking for different colours and types (eg sports, ankle etc) that I realised the hell that is socks and that bil was right to keep on top of every- single- sock!!! I once posted a picture on dm (can’t find it now) of about 30 odd socks, some have the days of the week on them, or are Christmas socks, some ankle in bright colours etc. dh said the same as your dh to me so I said you go find them. Two weeks later he gave up. Tell your dh to sort it (and if he does just go scream into a pillow😅)

ps bil recently started buying only black socks for himself and the kids😅

Edited

I need to know if the “investment sock” ever turned up!

Mandeinmanc · 18/03/2024 12:52

Everyone, don't go ending your relationships over this. I live alone and the missing sock thing still happens! 😭

Mnk711 · 18/03/2024 12:53

Me too, I think there's a sock block hole in our house.

TimeandMotion · 18/03/2024 12:56

There was a really funny kids’ book that my son liked which was by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet (of Supertato fame).

It was about a stripy sock who had never known his pair. He went around trying to pair up with other stripy things like popcorn boxes and towels but it never quite worked out. Then his long-lost mate turned up from being stuck behind a chest of drawers. Much rejoicing- until they realised very quickly that they couldn’t stand each other!

The final page was the sock skipping off into the sunset with some entirely non sock-like and non-stripy friend, possibly a mitten or something.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/03/2024 12:59

DH said I have a huge issue with it and its appalling that I cannot manage it

Definitely need to delegate this responsibility to him then.

I don't seem to have an issue with my own socks, and DH has bought lots of identical pairs - clean ones get shoved into the back of the drawer do so they fade pretty evenly, holed socks get thrown out individually and at some point he'll replace the whole lot.

Oh yes! That is the answer!

It didn’t, it’s still asked about from time to time!!!!!

Moofart · 18/03/2024 10:30

Also I once told my ten year old I'd pay him 10p per pair of socks he matched. He made £7.20.

Wow he did well!

DH said I have a huge issue with it and its appalling that I cannot manage it

Was hoping for a funny light hearted thread but this bothers me - did he actually mean this seriously? If so, why is it "your" job and why is he being so critical? Maybe he needs to take a turn of matching up the socks!
