People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

Problem comes in emergency-type situations now that there are virtually no public phone boxes anymore. You end up reliant on passers by to help you. That's why a lot of school kids need mobiles especially if they make their own way to/from school. A few decades ago, you were never far from a public pay phone and even if you had no coins, you could do a reverse charge call. Phones are pretty much an essential part of life these days, however short the distance from home that you are.

Most of the phone boxes that were left were vandalised by morons. But there really should be some still about.

It's so nice not to have to be bugged when you don't have your phone on you (literally). Not being tracked on everything you do. Sometimes it is great not to have a phone on you. Life before them functioned brilliantly :)

But you don't need to be bugged. Turn notifications off if they're annoying you!

I prefer to have mine with me in case something happens I would want to know about quickly. But we're all different!

chaosmaker · 18/03/2024 17:01

Your phone is literally a tracker, even when you turn it off it is listening to conversations etc. I have to use the stupid thing for work and sat nav and really don't like joining up all the apps together. I really do need to go back to using cash more. Easier to budget if you set yourself an actual cash limit too as paying with cards and phones sort of bypasses how much you're spending.

We'll all be sorry if they do phase out cash.....

They don’t listen to your conversation. And yes there will be someone who says that they were talking to a friend about holidays in Turkey and then they had Facebook ads for holidays in Turkey, but it isn’t because your phone was listening to you.

No it's not. I've heard conspiracy nuts say the same and that it even listens to you when you remove the battery!! Some people don't engage their brains.

MadMadaMim · 18/03/2024 17:28

I only take cards if I'm doing a big shop or I'm going more than 30 mins drive from home, just in case.. Otherwise it just seems unnecessary.

I always have £50 CASH in my purse and at least £10 change in my car.

People who never have cash away from home annoy me more than those not carrying cards to the local shops

Most people’s lives are kept in their phone these days, not just “young people”. Most of the older generation are on Facebook now to keep in touch, do online banking, purchase on Amazon, take precious photos etc.

Why do some of the “old people” feel the need to convince said “young people” that they shouldn’t be taking advantage of modern technology if they find it convenient? (Which let’s face it, is the whole point of it!)

This whole thread is based around luddites who won’t move with the times feeling they are somehow superior despite living in the past, telling people how they should or shouldn’t live their lives. It’s thoroughly bizarre. None of the tech users feel the need to berate anyone for making different choices or not moving with the times. If others want to - let them!

I feel no need to convince others that they shouldn't take advantage of modern technology, I'm highly computer literate, have an advanced smart phone and use online banking but don't see any advantage at all in paying using a phone wallet when debit or credit cards are so simple and much smaller/lighter to carry around in a small pocket.

I've actually had a mobile since the early 1990's and a computer since the 1980's and use tech when it are better than the alternative. However this idea of somebody's whole life being based on their mobile is laughable.

I really don't get the budgeting thing, and saying cash = easier to budget. I just don't see how.

I have a spreadsheet with all my usual payments on, plus I input every other payment I make during the month. It tells me how much I have left after all my known outgoings, and I never over-spend.

Plus I don't get left with a load of coins in my purse where I've used notes to pay for things. The money I have left is all available in my bank, not part-purse, part-bank.

Maybe if you've no self control and can't stop tapping your card to buy stuff, where with cash you can only spend what's in you purse, or you aren't able to log purchases for some reason. 🤷‍♀️

Oops, I'm really annoying as I don't carry cash or my cards to the local shop! 😬🤣

I can get cash out with my banking app, mind you (but only NatWest and Tesco ATMs), if I needed to.

That's great! Apparently you can do it from the digital wallet on the phone, I'm going to try that!

my dentist has a sign up, card only, when I walked in the snotty receptionist was giving an elderly chap grief because she said CASH ONLY! He said he didn’t bring cash because they gave him grief the last time he offered up cash 😩can’t bloody win- cash is legal tender!

BIossomtoes · 17/03/2024 22:10

God knows why it takes longer but it certainly does for some people. They fumble around with their phone finding their Clubcard then fiddle some more to pay. Both my cards are in my hand and it’s the work of seconds to use them.

Same here 😁
And I'm sticking with what works.

So people paying with phone is too long but cash is OK?!

No, paying with a card is quicker, I have used both phone and card and card wins for me. I don't often use cash but probably have about £100 in my purse in case I need it

OutOfTheHouse · 18/03/2024 19:03

cash is legal tender!

Legal tender is a meaningless term.

Legal tender means something to do with paying debts then cash has to be accepted rather than general shopping where it can be refused

Which is why you get people (by which I mean men) who fill their car with petrol and then make a big show out of paying with £5 coins. Petrol in a car is a debt. Regular shopping isn’t.

That's because you've "taken" the fuel, just like in a restaurant where you've eaten the meal. They can't be replaced, so there's a debt to pay for what you've taken/eaten.

A shop counter is completely different as anything in a shop is regarded in legal terms as an "invitation to treat" and the actual act of buying/selling is done at the counter, at which point the shop assistant/cashier can refuse to serve anyone for any reason (except legally protected characteristics), so they are within their right to refuse to serve someone who wants to pay in cash if they don't accept cash or by card if they don't accept cards.

I suppose an exception would be if, say, a mother allowed a child to eat a chocolate bar or bag of crisps in the shop and then went to the check out to pay for it, as, by the same token, it's been "used/consumed" so there's a debt, but I think in that case, the parent has actually "stolen" the crisps as they've done it without the consent of the shop owner/manager.

Where does this happen, I've never even seen a £5 coin, where are multiple men paying for petrol with them? I really dont think that's a thing many people encounter

Actually they can listen; my Google assistant sometimes pops up even though I didn't say the trigger words ("ok Google"). But they aren't monitoring you like that, yet. Search engines are very good at knitting together your doings though.
