People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

That’s the wallet app. It’s a pita if you have lots of cards whatever other posters think about the ease of using

Well I literally click the side of phone, type in PIN and swipe. So no bother here.
if some people make this difficult for themselves then that’s on them, but generally it’s easier than searching for a purse/card in a handbag

saffy2 · 18/03/2024 10:54

My Apple Pay frequently takes a while. If the card machine is flat for example I then need to lift it to do my Face ID and then double click, which frequently doesn’t register as I’m awkwardly holding it near the machine. Often it goes off from Apple Pay all together and then I have to open the phone, open the wallet and then do it again.
its definitely quicker for me to just get out my card and tap it 😂 I don’t know if it’s me or my phone 🤷🏽‍♀️

oh and I had no idea you could withdraw cash from an atm without a bank card 😳 that’s crazy! I have never seen or heard of anyone doing that. I’m with hsbc, and haven’t seen that on the app either. That’s really crazy!!

BobnLen · 18/03/2024 10:56

It’s ok if the right card is on top or you could end up paying on the wrong card I don’t use it much as my main card isn’t on it as it proved to difficult to add it

Norizzle · 18/03/2024 11:04

Because when you’re in a rush and want to feel weightless, you never leave the house without your phone. It has it all.

i can’t leave the house with just my purse and phone. I’d always need a bag to put the purse and phone into it. But if just my phone I can slip that into my pocket. Plus my purse has coins and lots of cards and it weighs a ton.

there you have it.

You don't log into an app to pay using Apple Pay.

Obviously. But it's not about paying, it's about scanning your app to get points and make use of vouchers and coupons.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 18/03/2024 11:08

Tbf OP I was in Sainsbury's on Saturday dealing with this issue. Luckily enough, I did have my purse with me.

However, I often jog to Sainsbury's with my backpack on and just my phone.

It's called convenience and why it was invented. I wouldn't scream at staff (I'm not a dick) but I would have to abandon my shopping and go home to get my card.

If they bring something out to make things more convenient then you can't expect everyone to not use it "just in case".

While a card is only light, who carries just a card?!…. no one! A card is generally then in a purse and that then in a bag as too bulky for a pocket.
I regularly just take my phone out now, and only ever had systems go down on me once … and just went back later with my card and got the few items I wanted… but then I don’t ever shop for much so it wasn’t a bother.

Me! I often go out with just my bank card in a pocket. I like leaving my phone at home and being uncontactable for a (short) while.

Loyalty cards are in the Apple Wallet as well. Or use Smart Shop / other supermarket equivalent, as the card details are there from logging in.

It's way quicker for many people to use a phone. Not all, but many.

Newsflash. Other phones are available.

With my own eyes I have watched people fiddle with the fingerprint scanner/face ID to get their phone to unlock. Scroll through some screens to find an app. Open app. wait. Scroll through some pictures of cards to choose one. Scroll down a list, perhaps to see how much money is in that account. Decide there's not enough and try to go back to the pictures of cards to choose another one. Accidentally close app and have to start again. Open app. wait. Scroll through some pictures of cards to choose another one. And then finally pay.

All that faffing is user error/incompetence, not the system!

Perhaps people need to actually spend a few moments to learn how their phones and apps work, open the phone and login etc before the moment comes to pay, etc.

Is it really any different to the morons who stand idly looking at the cashier scanning their shopping and waiting until the final total before they bother looking in their bag for their purse, routing through pockets for their purse, etc., and even when they've found the damn purse, they arse about looking through the compartments etc to find the particular note that they want to pay with, and then waste even more time trying to find the right coins.

I'd say it's exactly the same kind of disorganised faffer who farts around with a purse and cash, would also fart around with finding/choosing a particular card, and also far around trying to login, locate and use a contactless app!

It's the person, not the payment method!!

BobnLen · 18/03/2024 11:25

Coupons in My Waitrose also add to my supermarket shop faffing on the phone

KimberleyClark · 18/03/2024 11:25

I keep all my cards in this. It’s significantly smaller and lighter than my phone. Little lever at the bottom to press and the cards come up staggered so it’s easy to choose one. Room for cash too.

If you double click the button on the right hand side of your iPhone it auto opens the wallet.

I think you’d be in the minority there. I think most of the country are glued to their phones and would never leave house without it. Whether that’s healthy is another question.

I have a handbag (not sure if I’m in the minority there) so if I take that my phone will be in it. But if I am just going to Tesco I’ll just take the wallet and my house keys - alll my loyalty cards on the key ring. However, if I’m going for a walk in the park I’ll just take my phone in case I want to take a picture, and if I stop off for coffee somewhere I can pay with my phone.

Then maybe they should buy a decent phone 😂😂😂 though I highly double google pay is much slower or inconvenient than Apple Pay.

or, more likely, they’re just not very bright or considerate of anyone else - and would be JUST as annoying faffing around with a card or forgetting their PIN.

They STILL would need to check how much their balance is on their phone even when using a card if they were so inclined wouldn’t they? The points you’re raising are ridiculous and not related to paying by phone at all. Plenty of us do so in record time, so blaming phone payers above some people just being morons regardless of how they pay is just silly.

BobnLen · 18/03/2024 11:37

I always take my phone if I use the car but not on foot. In case it breaks down or I have a puncture

Yeah, this is a you problem not an apple pay problem 😂

double click your lock button. Try it now, even mid way through reading this. Or when your phone is locked. Or any time. Your card will pop straight up and immediately Face ID you. Now you’re ready to tap and pay 👍🏻

I feel like the more pertinent question here should be "why don't people just not act like total bellends"?!

If I'm in a shop and electronics go down so I can't pay using my phone then it's simply me who is inconvenienced, I wouldn't be in any way frustrated or annoyed at staff, because I'm not a total prick!

Edited

Because people can't control their own emotions when life happens, or there's simply a result of their own choices or actions and they can't get what they want, the majority know shouting and being aggressive isn't going to change anything but it makes them feel superior and validated to offload that onto someone else so they do it regardless of the situation, because it's socially acceptable to behave that way, and fashionable to be the 'victim' and poor me, look how badly I've been treated at the moment.

But that's a whole other thread 😁

My phone won't support payments that way, I always have my card, but if I couldn't pay by card and don't have cash then can't buy what I want to. And I don't expect someone to be grovellingly apologetic about it because it's just life and sometimes it happens to me too without it having to be someone else's fault.

I do. Sat nav, emergency use, and a wallet all in one.

people actually leave the house without their phone?

phoenixrosehere · 18/03/2024 11:48

If it’s a shopping day, I take my card because I need to take cash out to buy fruit and veg at the market or I’m getting something needed that if the card machine happens to be down I can go to the atm, otherwise just carry my phone.

I find it nice not to carry a purse around or a coat and not having to worry about my card slipping out of my pocket. I’ve found atm cards on the ground and have returned them to the owners or bank. I have yet to find a missing phone.

Obviously. But it's not about paying, it's about scanning your app to get points and make use of vouchers and coupons.

The thread is quite literally about people not taking their bank cards.

All the people paying with a physical card will still need to log into the same loyalty apps as everyone else if they want to use them. That’s then up to the app provider to improve the service there to make it more convenient. My OH now rarely bothers with the lidl app as it always logs him out. So they’re losing the data they want as people don’t use them regularly due to those issues.
