People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

Auburngal · 16/03/2024 14:19

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

I always feel like a shoplifter in M&S when I use that service, @firstfamhol! 🤣

Haha I love it! Especially when there is a HUGE queue or you have a small child with you. It’s so convenient! But I do usually leave the app open with the very visible receipt and semi wave my phone about while exiting 😂

NoWordForFluffy · 18/03/2024 09:49

Yep. Me too! 🤣

I think it does tell you to leave it open in case you're challenged. I haven't been yet though.

“Also they won’t look like idiots either.”

I’m curious to why you think a customer willing to pay, would look like an idiot because of the failure of shop / banking tech?

Yes, cards are light, but you know what’s even lighter? Not carrying a purse / wallet / bag. I don’t even need to have my phone to pay via my watch, so even if I forgot my phone I wouldn’t be stuck.

I genuinely couldn’t tell you the last time I used chip and pin, or even an actual card for contactless. Technically contactless via watch / phone is even more secure.

In M&S and Sainsburys I use the app on my phone to scan while I shop (means I check all my offers) and pay via Apple Pay. So it’s not even contactless and you don’t have to even go to the checkout you can just walk out. Unlike you, I don’t think “anyone who queues at a checkout is an idiot” for paying a different way than me for instance.

If I am ever truly stuck, 2 of my banks offer contactless ATM withdrawals via the app or text. These are both big chains so they are everywhere. Lots of other banks do too. So again, don’t need my card to get cash out.

People do things differently, it doesn’t mean they are idiots.

@Auburngal Are you going to acknowledge the question that others, like myself have asked or just ignore?!

Genuinely curious as to why you think it is acceptable to say people are idiots because they do things differently than you - it is not any less nasty, than the customers shouting at staff (which obviously isn’t ok).

You can access all your receipts in the app too if you do close it. So handy for returns!

chaosmaker · 18/03/2024 09:55

EVERYONE of us needs to carry cash before they take it away from us. Cash can't be digitally wiped out either and may keep the remaining banks and post offices open. Also keeps cash viable for businesses that are cash only. Would be a lot better if people had cash then they wouldn't need to shout and scream cos they can't pay.

Don't get me started on cashless businesses.
Carrying a bank card when tech fails is pointless.

RaraRachael · 18/03/2024 09:57

I hate the thought of having everything on my phone. Even store cards I carry physically on me so that I just tap them at the checkout. I'm fed up being caught behind people with everything on their phones holding up the queue trying to pay and use their store card, struggling to find them or they just don't work.

BobnLen · 18/03/2024 09:58

If only I could easily put my M&S credit card on my phone to use in M&S, I don't want to use another card because I get about £200 a year cashback on M&S card. Unfortunately the bank they use is not as user friendly as the store

BIossomtoes · 18/03/2024 10:00

It’s not. Chip and pin always works when contactless doesn’t.

I think the problem is these apps log you out if you don't use them regularly. And then you can't always have the same password across all apps as they have differing password rules and also they don't let you change to the same password if you've used it before so you are left with lots of password options. It's exhausting.

Surely it’s no different to being stuck behind someone who acts like it’s a surprise they have to pay when they get to till and then goes digging for it their purse at bottom of their bag and then digging for the right store card amongst a wallet of a dozen cards?

or someone who struggles with arithmetic but wants to hand over exact change/use their change up so counts it slowly into the shop assistants hand?

those people will always exist. It’s nothing to do with phones.

Mary46 · 18/03/2024 10:17

Signs up on our cinema card only. Places dont want cash now.. I have cards on my phone but they in my handbag too.

It's definitely different, logging into an app takes longer than finding a card in your purse.

SerendipityJane · 18/03/2024 10:24

It costs businesses to bank cash as well

There's also a human cost, as anyone who has stared down the wrong end of a shotgun knows only too well.

shatteredmama · 18/03/2024 09:17

I’d rather carry a small lightweight bank card than a power bank

Not the point that I was responding to. Your comment of “I would’ve expected manufacturers to have improved batteries” was not justified, they have. Irrelevant of whether you want to carry back cards, train tickets or the like.

You’ve clearly never used Apple Pay. You do not have to “log into an app” 🤣

In fact, the moment you hover your phone next to the contactless reader your card automatically and instantly pops up on your screen for you. Otherwise a simple double tap of a button brings the card up in readiness while the last few items are being scanned. You can even Face ID or Touch ID in advance as well so it’s already authorised to pay the second you pop your phone to the reader (once the cashier has caught up with you 🙃).

No phone signal required. No “logging in”. Nothing.

Its the same speed as card contactless, and faster than chip & PIN or cash.

If you store your loyalty cards into your apple wallet it’s just a case of double click choose store card, then payment card. Takes seconds. Much daster than hunting in a wallet.

You have to rely though on the card you want being on top though, it invariably isn't, so generally better for folks that only use one card who are generally younger, most older folk use more than one

Newsflash. Other phones are available.

With my own eyes I have watched people fiddle with the fingerprint scanner/face ID to get their phone to unlock. Scroll through some screens to find an app. Open app. wait. Scroll through some pictures of cards to choose one. Scroll down a list, perhaps to see how much money is in that account. Decide there's not enough and try to go back to the pictures of cards to choose another one. Accidentally close app and have to start again. Open app. wait. Scroll through some pictures of cards to choose another one. And then finally pay.

It takes a millisecond to change it 🙈 literally.

They are stacked and all visible at the same time. If your default card (which you set yourself so I’d hope you’d have you usual card as default) isn’t the one you want to use, just tap your stack, tap the right card and it immediately swaps and authorises payment on that card instead. Again, far quicker than the bag and purse rummage that’s for sure.

I swap my default card if I need to. I’ll set my Clarity Credit Card on holidays as it’s free foreign transactions. Then can swap back to debit card which gives me cash back on groceries when I’m home. But it really matters not.

Store cards can also be kept in apple wallet so that’s quicker than physical cards too.

T1Dmama · 18/03/2024 10:45

While a card is only light, who carries just a card?!…. no one! A card is generally then in a purse and that then in a bag as too bulky for a pocket.
I regularly just take my phone out now, and only ever had systems go down on me once … and just went back later with my card and got the few items I wanted… but then I don’t ever shop for much so it wasn’t a bother.

That’s the wallet app. It’s a pita if you have lots of cards whatever other posters think about the ease of using

NoWordForFluffy · 18/03/2024 10:50

Weird. I've definitely seen Android users having the same speedy payment using Google Pay as Apple Pay gives its users.
