No one to sign DD’s passport renewal!!

Trying to renew DD’s passport and we have no one to sign. I could ask my manager but she hasn’t known me for 2 years and I wouldn’t want to put her in that position to lie for us.

I have 2 friends both SAHM, DH doesn’t have anyone he can ask the person he did ask doesn’t have a passport.

What on earth do we do?

I have so many people I could ask at work as I’m a HR professional but I haven’t know them two years.

'Someone with standing in the community' means someone who has something to lose by fraudulently counter-signing a passport application. So members of professional bodies, a pub licensee, a teacher for example, fall into this category.
I do a skilled job with no responsibility and so I don't. I know because I was asked to counter-sign a passport application. I asked my friend to go away and check and sure enough I didn't make the grade. A scaffolder (unless they own their own business) or a dinner lady wouldn't be able to sign either. Because doctors and teachers often don't now sign (and I fully understand why!), it is becoming increasingly difficult for some people to get passports.

I think this is a common issue. I’ve signed for 14 children since January as no one seems to have anyone else to ask.
Its a little outdated imo, I think the system needs revising.

How would you suggest revising? The list is already very broad.

Trulyme · 15/03/2024 13:38

I asked my DDs head teacher at her old primary school, as she had only been in year 7 a few months when I needed it renewed.
They happily did it.

I would see if any of her current or old teachers have an email address and ask them.
Most would be more than happy to help.

ilovesooty · 15/03/2024 13:39

I also qualify to sign as a registered member of a professional body. I'd still only sign for someone I know on a personal basis. I wouldn't sign for a client, even a returning one I'd known for the required length of time.

I had my child's signed by a teacher friend. Are you sure teachers are not allowed?

I think it's more likely to be a school rule, they're still on the list as a profession if they want to do it for a friend.

They do need to be careful, one of our teachers had to go to court after signing one for someone who wasn't who she thought they we're.

I do an admin job and have signed successfully. Not a member of any professional body. The scaffolder and dinner lady are totally worth a try.

FinallyMrsT · 15/03/2024 13:48

I thought the advice changed it didn't need to be a registered professional anymore just someone you knew for a period of time.

So a friend or neighbour

Or ask one of her teachers

Last resort GP but they usually charge for this service.

Onelifeonly · 15/03/2024 13:48

Pinkloveheartpjs · 15/03/2024 08:49

Teachers and GP’s not allowed to anymore

That's not true. They can if they want to or can charge a fee for it.

But a school would have verified ID for a child on their roll.

Roselilly36 · 15/03/2024 08:49

I don’t think you need to get it countersigned for a renewal OP. I renewed my sons passport recently so he now has a new adult passport (we were renewing child to first adult one) just uploaded new photo, all went through fine, had his new passport in 8 days.

You do if their appearance has changed significantly. Just renewed my daughter's, she was not quite 1 in the original passport and is now 8, so obviously she looks a bit different these days and had to have her ID verified.

BashfulClam · 15/03/2024 13:53

Remember the list is just guidance. I asked my friend who is a Carer to sign my husbands and it was fine. My husband is a Civil Servant so can also sign them, I can I think too as I have a professional role.

Conkersinautumn · 15/03/2024 13:58

Midday supervisors have DBS definitely good standing in the community too. I'd go with her if she has a passport

Conkersinautumn · 15/03/2024 14:00

(Dinner ladies often called midday supervisors now)

I’ve just rang the passport office and they have said her teacher can? I didn’t think that was possible so I will ask.

My friends partners have “normal jobs” scaffolders

Do any of the scaffolders or similar type of jobs have a registered company? If they operate independently they might.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 15/03/2024 14:01

DappledThings · 15/03/2024 11:19

If she has her own passport and is "in good standing", i.e. no criminal record etc then she'll be fine.

I don’t think a dinner lady can. Only certain professions

BaaBaaBlackSheepOfTheFam · 15/03/2024 14:05

Did she go to nursery? Could you email the manager?

DappledThings · 15/03/2024 14:05

The list of people allowed to sign is a list of suggestions, not an exclusive one.

It is not limited to professions as repeatedly posted on the thread.

A dinner lady would have good standing in the community.

Just one unpleasant incident like I had was quite enough. I had to put up with a lot of pleading from the child at the time as well, and it wasn't his fault. However you've made up your mind about it, evidently.

Yeah - found it a pain in the arse. You are signing that you have known the parent for 2 years, but kids in Year 7 were asking me, so obviously I hadn't even know the child for 2 years and I had only met the parents once a parents' evening. They wouldn't accept this and were grumpy - told me they were only asking at school because the GP charged a fee.

Actually I was relieved when they said you had to give your own passport details (this was on a paper form handed back to the child, so yes the child and parents would have seen this) because when my passport expired I could honestly say I couldn't do it. Even then I was accused of lying because obviously I must have a passport.

Under 12s need a countersignature

Tigertigertigertiger · 15/03/2024 14:18

As someone who countersigns many passports PLEASE do it online.

BoogieBoogieWoogie · 15/03/2024 14:20

OP has already said shes doing it online

Samlewis96 · 15/03/2024 14:23

Minymile · 15/03/2024 10:32

Nonsense. If that was the case no under 2 year olds could have passports

Bank Manager, lawyer , teacher at child's school ,religious leader, other medical professional, accountant, estate agent ?

A friend who is a teacher or GP can. Teachers can't do it for their own students or GPS for their patients
