Trying to renew DD’s passport and we have no one to sign. I could ask my manager but she hasn’t known me for 2 years and I wouldn’t want to put her in that position to lie for us.

I have 2 friends both SAHM, DH doesn’t have anyone he can ask the person he did ask doesn’t have a passport.

What on earth do we do?

I have so many people I could ask at work as I’m a HR professional but I haven’t know them two years.

Why do you need to go through this for a RENEWAL.
Just put form in post with recent photos. Job Done. No verifications of identity required.

Another person who knows better than the passport office about what they require.

At least read the OP's comments.
She has been told she needs it.

@Hereyoume

What's wrong with just filling out an application?

Like you do for Bank Accounts, Drivers licences, professional associations.

There's no logical reason why someone needs to counter sign a passport application*.

So you would have no problem with me getting a passport in your name?

It's a renewal, not an application, the Passport Office already has all the information they need.

The opinion of some random person (who could just lie on the form) adds precisely fuck all to the integrity of the information the Passport Office ALREADY has.

An initial application is conducted in person anyway, so again, fuck all need for a random strangers signature.

It's a renewal where the person doesn't look like the photo in the other passport

What do you suggestd happens in that case?

What is the purpose of all this I wonder? Lots of people have got passports by breaking the rules it seems (either by having people who don’t qualify sign for them, or having people who haven’t known them2 years). What is the reason for the signature being required, what’s it supposed to do? And what is the potential outcome of people doing it fraudulently, which it seems happens regularly based on this thread? What would happen if they just ditched this requirement completely, which it seems they may as well do?!

It is not fraud to get someone who has a job but is not a 'professional' to sign.

As long as OP is not lying about her daughter's identity she is not committing fraud.

The passport office has other checks they can do behind the scenes to verify identity, they don't just rely on the signatory.

They do call to check with the signatories though. I used to sign them when I was in one of the approved roles and got lots of calls.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 19/03/2024 13:45

I've signed plenty and I've never been called. My job isn't exactly one listed either, although it does make me a person of good standing in the community (which I think they include as a bit of a catch 'em all, or at least catch most).

Tooyoungto · 19/03/2024 17:52

If you do the application online, the countersignatory definitely has to answer questions. I am not sure how it works with a paper form but have heard of people being called. If you put someone who they think is not suitable, they will just reject them and ask you for a different countersignatory.

DelCalMun · 19/03/2024 18:28

All you need is any friend who's known you 2 or more years who has/had a respectable job as per the long list of suggestions. Ask the passport office for advice if you really can't think of anyone.

A lot of people don't know anyone that works in that long middle class list of respectable jobs, their circle of friends may be shop assistants, factory workers, warehouse workers etc. If you are in a middle class bubble you will and as usual think this is normal.

YouHaveAnArse · 21/03/2024 16:55

How many people actually know their bank manager? My bank is online.

Same with the suggestion of priest/vicar/rabbi etc. - how does that work if you're not someone who attends religious services? As I suspect most of us these days do not.

OMG opening a bank account with a new bank is harder than getting a passport these days.
When I was a lodger they wanted a utilities bill and when I explained I couldn't get one, they just kept repeating that I should come back once I get a bill. Nightmare.
