No one to sign DD’s passport renewal!!

Pinkloveheartpjs · 15/03/2024 08:45

Trying to renew DD’s passport and we have no one to sign. I could ask my manager but she hasn’t known me for 2 years and I wouldn’t want to put her in that position to lie for us.

I have 2 friends both SAHM, DH doesn’t have anyone he can ask the person he did ask doesn’t have a passport.

What on earth do we do?

I have so many people I could ask at work as I’m a HR professional but I haven’t know them two years.

Surely one of the scaffolders would be fine - just needs to be someone 'in good standing in the community'

Tangled123 · 15/03/2024 10:07

I’m going to second your friend’s partner suggestion.
I got my first British passport as an adult and it was signed for by a HR manager from NZ who I’d only known for a few weeks. I don’t think they care too much (or maybe they were more lenient with me because I already had an Irish passport).

redsky21 · 15/03/2024 10:08

It can pretty much be anyone with a passport and a job title. Renewal for under 11's need a countersignature

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 15/03/2024 10:09

Self employed builder would be fine if they have their own limited company. You could probably get an employed plumber or electrician to sign if they're a member of a registered body. Are you in touch with anyone from your previous job?

What's DH's job?

Misthios · 15/03/2024 10:10

The issue with asking teachers (or doctors, dentists) is that the Passport Office might ring them up and verify what they have put. Some teachers/schools don't want to risk their staff being hoiked out of class to speak about little Johnny's passport application. Doctors are allowed to sign but only if they know you socially as a friend not just as a patient.

Someone of "good standing" covers a lot of ground - the chair of the PTA at school would count, people who run local charities, the priest/vicar/imam/rabbi, police officers, Scout or Guide leaders etc etc etc.

I've been signing passports for 30 years and never once had a call about it!

No I've never been called up either - but it's a possibility.

Minihippyme89 · 15/03/2024 10:12

I signed my now ex husbands years ago and I didn’t even work at the time, no one bothered to check

How old is your DD? My daughter is five so looks totally different from her newborn photo.

16, so 11 in last photo. It just didn’t ask on the form for one. I can easily get one as I’m in a profession that can sign but it never asked

I’ve had 1 call over 23yrs doing it, ages ago

I suppose so. But the call wouldn't have to be responded to immediately. Same as any other calls a teacher might get.

I sign loads as a retired teacher.

For a currently employed teacher to sign for friends is one thing - I don't see why they should be expected to sign for pupils and their parents.

Indeed. I was a secondary teacher and we got fed up with the numbers we were asked to sign.

mn29 · 15/03/2024 10:16

Former colleagues? Do none of the parents of your children’s friends (who I assume you would know to some extent when they’re primary school age, at least) have professional jobs?

RoseAndRose · 15/03/2024 10:18

Who signed when she was first issued with a passport?

kcchiefette · 15/03/2024 10:18

Teachers are allowed to sign.

My DSs needed a countersignature on his. I asked a friend who was a Software Engineer and it was rejected. I then asked my mums business partner who was an auctioneer to do it.

Make sure whoever it is knows parents and childs DOB and address. When doing it online, they ask for these details.

waterrat · 15/03/2024 10:19

People sometimes ask in our class whatsapp group for this. There may be a parent who is eligible.

Why though? It's a nice thing to do for someone that has no ill effect on you, unless the remote possibility of a phone call is too much for you. Your attitude seems incredibly high and mighty.

RoseAndRose · 15/03/2024 10:24

There are restrictions on teachers because of the amount of personal identity information you need to put on the form.

It is one thing for a teacher who is a friend and who doesn't mind you having that information to be the counter-signatory.

Quite another to expect them to provide that info on request to the parents of any pupil she's taught for 2 or more years.

RandomMess · 15/03/2024 10:25

Who signed the original one?

Whereareallthemillionaires · 15/03/2024 10:26

Any one of these. As an example, I should say they’ve left out a lot eg architect, lawyer judge. Generally it’s a qualified professional
Id pop into the school and ask dcs teacher to sign assuming they’ve known your dc for 2years.

It’s worth pointing out you don’t need to know them for 2years your dd needs to.

Do you go to church as a vicar or priest could sign also.

teachers can’t/won’t do it - unless you know them personally.

My head has stopped this happening which staff were very grateful for. We were getting loads of requests and it’s really time consuming. I’ll happily sign for friends though.

Ive posted the Government list as an example that they post of acceptable professions
Its up to individuals what they chose to do

Quatty · 15/03/2024 10:31

just ask someone at work! You’ve been through all the right to work checks so they know your legit, plus it’s just for a little kid!
Are you sure you can’t find ANYONE any senior mgr or member of a recognised assoc of any kind can donit
