To think that Poor Things is actually a seriously fucked up film?

Spoilers obvs

Basic plot summary- pregnant woman trapped in an abusive marriage attempts suicide by jumping from a bridge. Frankenstein-type scientist retrieves her body, transplants the unborn baby’s brain into her head and brings her back to life. This child-woman is then basically abducted by a dodgy bloke who teaches her all about the joys of fucking, she very naively gives all their money away and because they are now broke and she enjoys sex so very much, she becomes a prostitute, whilst still having the mental age of a young child.

There’s no denying Emma Stone is brilliant in the role, but AIBU to think that it is otherwise one completely messed up Freudian nightmare of a movie?!

Bella becomes a respected, ardently socialist, female doctor, living into the twentieth century

Ah yes the happy hooker male fantasy that brothels and male exploitation don’t break women and give them syphilis, but pave the way to respectable careers..

The hookers aren't happy in the brothel, they're exploited. It's an unpleasant and degrading experience. Bella has to leave and to back to London to study to become a doctor. The career only happens after she's left the brothel..

HRTQueen · 15/03/2024 21:23

Blink and you will miss that part of the film

Mirabai · 15/03/2024 21:34

Yes the reality of degradation of prostitution is authentically conveyed when she is bound and gagged for laffs - oh the comedy! If only she hadn’t such an insatiable desire for sex and no internal stigma eh?

But hey she soon perks up and follows the well-worn path from brothel to consulting room. That makes us all feel a lot better doesn’t it?

Duckswaddle · 15/03/2024 21:55

It’s a fantastic film. And the book is fantastic too.

tiggersfamily · 15/03/2024 21:58

AngeloMysterioso · 13/03/2024 22:02

Quite apart from the whole prostitution is a great career choice for broke women with a high sex drive (ie sex work is work) subplot- this woman is brought back to life against her knowledge or consent and has no idea that she has her own baby’s brain in her head.

Fucked. Up.

Edited

It's supposed to be fucked up-surely?

Did you hear about the scene deleted by BFI for the UK version. Apparently the french character hires her to have seggs with him in front of his kids to show them how. Really MK Ultra/Beta kitten mind programming vibes if you ask me. Not a fan.

I'm sorry, what? You know your balls deep into a conspiracy when you don't even have to see a film to decide it's exemplary of the world mind control theory.

Thanks so much for this summary which has def helped my decision to give it a pass. I think you took one for the team 👏

It was shortened not deleted as it was felt to contravene the Child Protection Act 1978. Not sure how pruning it helped? It was quite long enough.

I don’t think I could watch this. Sounds like a waste of time and oh what a surprise directed and produced by men. Thankyou for saving me a few hours of my life op! X

Emma Stone was on the credits as Producer

colouringindoors · 15/03/2024 23:37

While I'm not a huge fan of the film, I really think people should make their own minds up, rather than decide against, based on this thread.

Chocolatefrenzy · 15/03/2024 23:39

Meant to watch this for 20 mins just to have a taster as so much hype and the Oscar for Emma Stone etc....any way it was so so bizarre that it sucked me in and i couldn't stop watching it it till the end!
It is totally unique and ive never seen a film like it before, it won't be for everybody but I thought it was actually quite brilliant

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 16/03/2024 00:08

Saw it tonight, didn't know what it was about beforehand. Only saw this thread afterwards.

It thought it was brilliant, amazing sets, music & great characters. Bella discovered her true love & it wasn't men or sex but surgery.

Not everyone will like it, who likes everything?

Fascinating to see some comments on here, especially from people who haven't seen it.

@UnbelievableLie

Why does everything have to have a agreeable theme such as feminism ect

Why can't a film be artistically visual and thought provoking in a controversial and unausaul ways too in depicting the reality of female experiences such what @localnotail & @ghostyslovesheets posts are about then?

I don’t think I want to see a film about feminism per se, but a filmmaker who has a profound commitment to feminism could create incredible roles for women. I think Anatomy of a Fall demonstrates this. The main character is complex and multifaceted and the fact that we are never sure about her innocence/guilt proves that. A truly feminist director with the filmmaking gifts of Lanthimos could be outstanding.

Pullups · 16/03/2024 07:46

Havent heard of this but WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!
Sounds creepy and fucking wrongggg!!!!!!!!!

Ramalangadingdong · 16/03/2024 07:46

The feeling I left the cinema with after seeing this film was that as a woman I was being mocked.

it was a bit like being an expert in your field and having some tosser who knows nothing about the subject explaining it to you in minute detail. For hours.

And (because I am a nice woman) I sat there with a smile on my face and let them do it.

@Bazinga007 why do you think it’s a brilliant film? Have you read the previous posts on this thread? What do you think of them?

People don't have to dislike a movie just because others did.

burnoutbabe · 16/03/2024 08:26

The cut scene is just that you can't see the kids in a sex scene.

But you can see the kids in one frame then Emma naked with dad then back to the kids.

But not all in same frame/shot. As far as I understand it.

Ineke · 16/03/2024 08:34

I can quite see how some may find this film disturbing and/or too difficult to watch. I thought it brilliant, illuminating and very funny. A lot below the surface to think about. I am now minded to read the book.

OoooohSpookyGhost · 16/03/2024 10:11

It’s unfortunate the author is no longer alive. I often wonder what dead authors would have thought about adaptations of their work, especially when in most cases it’s a matter of selling the rights and then having absolutely no say in what happens. It’s relatively rare an author gets a lot of input after that fact.

I think it would be interesting to hear what the author would have done differently (if anything).
