To think that Poor Things is actually a seriously fucked up film?

Spoilers obvs

Basic plot summary- pregnant woman trapped in an abusive marriage attempts suicide by jumping from a bridge. Frankenstein-type scientist retrieves her body, transplants the unborn baby’s brain into her head and brings her back to life. This child-woman is then basically abducted by a dodgy bloke who teaches her all about the joys of fucking, she very naively gives all their money away and because they are now broke and she enjoys sex so very much, she becomes a prostitute, whilst still having the mental age of a young child.

There’s no denying Emma Stone is brilliant in the role, but AIBU to think that it is otherwise one completely messed up Freudian nightmare of a movie?!

It sounds dreadful.

Not really. Your rebuttal was just kneejerk 'this is disgusting and panders to the male gaze' stuff. Fine if you find it distasteful/not for you but not fine just to label it and other people who did and do enjoy it.

Ah, I see. So you’re simply looking for people to agree with you. It doesn’t matter what their reason is for disliking it - the fact they do means you will disregard any basis for their opinion.

It’s deeply boring when people can’t discuss differences and instead play a ‘gotcha’ to everyone who either disagrees or refuses to engage.

You have made yourself very clear.

You still haven't properly explained what is misogynist about the film, so why should I engage? I want to hear people's arguments, not just their feelings.

I just watched Poor Things Explained | Non-Spoiler Analysis as I haven't seen the film and I don't think it sounds misogynistic.

It isn't. People upthread are confusing seeing misogynistic attitudes being displayed with them being espoused.

shoesandshows · 13/03/2024 21:42

I've never seen this film. Not sure if im intrigued or weirded out now😂

So basically. They make her a child in an adults body and she becomes a prostitute ? With the mind of a baby?

If so I'm with you who thinks of that?

It's a plot device used to expose hypocrisy in society

WitsEnd10 · 14/03/2024 14:38

It bored me. It was visually pleasing, but far too slow paced. I nodded off twice while watching.

Magnastorm · 14/03/2024 14:52

The core message and theme of Poor Things is in no way misogynistic.

It has misogny in it, and characters who are misogynistic. This is not the same thing as the film itself being inheriently misogynistic.

NonPlayerCharacter · 14/03/2024 14:59

It may be a disturbing premise (and I haven't seen it so I can't comment on it) but it's a retelling of Frankenstein, and the premise of that was pretty unpleasant too...and came from the mind of a 19 year old girl.

mathanxiety · 14/03/2024 15:02

MimiGC · 14/03/2024 13:43

It sounds dreadful.

It's a subversive movie if you dig below the surface, a very sobering commentary on the baseness and crassness of men, as far as I could tell. So yes, dreadful behaviour imparts the measage.

Goldenbear · 14/03/2024 15:46

LovelyTheresa · 14/03/2024 13:29

So you can't back up your assertion that the film is misogynistic, so you start throwing out ad hominems. Somehow I'm entirely unsurprised.

@VampireWeekday I LOLed! Good one!

It's misogynistic as the film is a male fantasy of the sex loving, coquettish girl/woman, wearing pretty dresses, with sex scenes and titillation shoe horned into almost every scene in the film. Actually, correction, sex is the film, it is a film about sex.

MsPloddingBottom · 14/03/2024 15:59

Saramia · 13/03/2024 23:36

Sick. It’s basically about having sex with a child. Only a paedo could have come up with that plot.

Also searched the rating and there was this info. Just sounds weird and gross to me. Not sure the acting or riveting storyline would make up for it

There was a thread not long ago where many posters said they didn't like to watch any sex at all on TV/films so there are bound to be people that think this is absolutely disgusting.

I haven't seen it yet though.

The sex 'is' is the story, oh sorry, it is demonstrative of her freedom, it is not a disgust thing, I object to the tediousness of it, it is pretentious porn really.

It does look like it's got a story though not like the 365 films😁

Goldenbear · 14/03/2024 17:21

Well I would reserve judgment until you have seen it. 😬

GrandTheftWalrus · 14/03/2024 17:26

I haven't seen the film either. However I'm not gonna start shouting peado at everyone and saying they need hard drives checked.

I'm going to watch it then form an opinion. Like any normal person would do.

I really liked it, Emma Stone was perfect as Bella.

I’m enjoying reading your posts @VampireWeekday .

Same.

I have no respect for anyone who uses the term 'paedo/pedo' in any context.

Whatever your opinion of this film, you are a dick.

I elaborated in several posts actually. I believe what you’re doing is beautifully explained in the recent Chris Williamson podcast with Dr Phil, where they discuss how the reason so much bullshit is prevalent online is because it takes so little time to go ‘I don’t agree!’ and expecting the person you don’t agree with to then bend over backwards to explain in detail their position which you will never concede to anyway. It’s a waste of everyone’s time. If you don’t like what I, and other posters have already detailed regarding misogny, porn and the like, then too bad.

You keep saying 'misogyny' but you don't make it at all clear what is misogynistic. You are in effect saying 'this is what I say it is because I say it is'. That isn't an argument, it is just a statement which you are trying to say is an argument.

You gave your opinion.

I haven’t seen the film but have enjoyed reading the thread. I will try and keep an open mind when I see it!

Out of interest, how did the book ending differ to the film?

Goldenbear · 14/03/2024 18:25

Magnastorm · 14/03/2024 17:42

It really, really isn't a film about sex at all.

Well it is, it moves from one sex act to the next, going nowhere with it- it isn't profound and I don't conclude this is what the liberated woman looks like!
