To think that Poor Things is actually a seriously fucked up film?

Spoilers obvs

Basic plot summary- pregnant woman trapped in an abusive marriage attempts suicide by jumping from a bridge. Frankenstein-type scientist retrieves her body, transplants the unborn baby’s brain into her head and brings her back to life. This child-woman is then basically abducted by a dodgy bloke who teaches her all about the joys of fucking, she very naively gives all their money away and because they are now broke and she enjoys sex so very much, she becomes a prostitute, whilst still having the mental age of a young child.

There’s no denying Emma Stone is brilliant in the role, but AIBU to think that it is otherwise one completely messed up Freudian nightmare of a movie?!

Why don’t you think about it and see if you can figure it out.

@Mirabai

why can’t you just explain it then if it’s really so obvious?

middleofthenightmediumsizedtoblerone · 14/03/2024 13:12

I'll join the queue @Mirabai

I haven't seen it yet but I'm going to.

I've thought about it a lot and I haven't found myself agreeing. It depicts a woman living in a misogynistic world, and it depicts misogynistic men. But since the film depicts them as villans and the world in a negative light, it is not in my view a misogynistic film. The protagonist is someone navigating the misogynistic wolrd as best she can, but we're not supposed to conclude that she is incapable, lacking in agency, there for the pleasure of men, or anything like that. We're supposed to see her as a full agent learning about the world, forming her own personality and choosing where she wants to try and place herself.

I'm honestly not a big film watcher, the only thing that springs to mind is dune 1 which I watched the other day in anticipation of seeing dune 2 at the cinema.
Actually one of my all time favourites is the original Narnia series, I kind of like avatar too you know with the blue people.
Im sure this question is being used to tell me my favourite films are weird too 😭😂 but hell it's a Thursday and i'm bored and waiting for the plumber to come and fix my bathtub so of course I'm going to argue over a film I haven't seen

Nope, don't think you or your taste is weird. Not going to be critical, either - I'm just having a conversation...

I know I myself would never watch some of the films - for example, Hostel, Saw, Human Centipede - you get the idea )) But I would never comment on them, either - mainly because I have never seen them and never will. I just think criticizing something you haven't seen is very strange, sorry.

Also, I know that in the past I was wrong - for example, I love films and watch a lot of them, including old and obscure foreign stuff - but I always avoided old (and very famous) Japanese film Battle Royale - it sounded boring and violent. But after watching it - cant remember how or why - I changed my mind completely, it is indeed violent but also a great film (this film is what the whole Hunger Games premise is based on).

Also, if you like fantasy stuff like Narnia, don't you feel curious about the set up of Poor Things? It is absolutely amazing.

edited - sorry, masses of spelling mistakes, did not bother changing all of them... sorry if your eyes hurt ))

Exactly. @Mirabai, I'm still waiting for you to explain what's misogynistic about it, as opposed to just portraying misogyny.

@Mirabai I'd love to know this too (breakdown of what you thought was misogyny) thanks 😊

I’m sure you would but I don’t have the time or patience. If you don’t get it that’s fine, it’s not my job to help you.

Ok, fine. So you are saying it is misogynistic in your opinion, not in fact? I can work with that, but you are admitting that you can't explain what is actually misogynistic about it. If it is so simple, it shouldn't take you much time to explain.

YankSplaining · 14/03/2024 13:17

This whole “only a pedophile would think of this story/like this movie” thing feels like a witch hunt to me. On a different site, I was accused of being a pedophile because I knew what the age of consent in a particular American state was. That was because the question was crucial to the discussion and I Googled it. 🙄

People who write crime fiction think of dark and disturbing things all the time, but we don’t assume that they must really want to do those things.

I didn’t see Poor Things because the trailer made me cringe and the central premise strikes me as repugnant. But unless there’s clear evidence that someone is actually attracted to prepubescent children, I’m not going to fling around serious accusations, even anonymously on Mumsnet.

TIme enough though to repeatedly refuse to back up what you are saying though 😂

@Mirabai Ah ha. Oh okay, no problem. I understand. 🫠

You didn’t realise we were discussing opinions? Your opinion, my opinion. How odd.

ManchesterBeatrice · 14/03/2024 13:19

@Magnastorm Twas a predictable ending to that part of the argument.

Did make me chuckle though.

Ok, so why is it misogynistic in your opinion? Don't say you 'don't have time' to explain, you had time to type out several messages and according to you it is so simple it barely needs explaining, so a couple of minutes should do it. I'm waiting.

ManchesterBeatrice · 14/03/2024 13:21

@LovelyTheresa Me too. 🫠

Mirabai · 14/03/2024 13:23

There are 1000s of goady posters online looking for a fight. And if you don’t engage they say - see you can’t!!1!!1!! as if they were 12, and some of them probably are.

It's fine, I may be 12 but I have the body of a 35 year old woman so it's ok to argue with me online.

(Joking, before anyone leaps on this!)

Mirabai · 14/03/2024 13:27

Argue with your mates then, I’m working.

ManchesterBeatrice · 14/03/2024 13:27

I don't think anyone's looking for a fight, it's a discussion, and as you've shared the misogynist remark it would be fab to hear why, you're still here, still engaging, and you have said it's so simple.

We might not disagree when you point it out.

ManchesterBeatrice · 14/03/2024 13:29

@VampireWeekday I think we have our answer 🫠

So you can't back up your assertion that the film is misogynistic, so you start throwing out ad hominems. Somehow I'm entirely unsurprised.

@VampireWeekday I LOLed! Good one!

Weird that people are asking for the misogyny view to be backed up again when there are dozens of comments in this thread explaining this exact thing.

They don't explain why they think that the film's message is misogynist, though. Showing men behaving in a bad way is not inherently misogynist, these men are shown to be not good people.

Not really. Your rebuttal was just kneejerk 'this is disgusting and panders to the male gaze' stuff. Fine if you find it distasteful/not for you but not fine just to label it and other people who did and do enjoy it.
