Neighbour using my drop kerb!

mykerb · 12/03/2024 20:54

A new family have moved in next door - not attached we are a row of two semi's each and so on..
I have a driveway and a dropped kerb. So it goes my drive, pavement and then the dropped kerb.

My next door neighbours have a make shift drive (from previous tenants) but NO dropped kerb, it doesn't help that their neighbours have 4 cars and two permanently parked outside their garden so the new neighbours have nowhere to park except down the road because of it but again not my problem!

They have started driving over my drop kerb to park in the make shift drive, I have started parking on my dropped kerb to make a point of it and I did block them in, to which the woman politely asked if I could move my car so she could reverse out, I told her I don't appreciate her using the kerb to park in, to which she replied that she is going to be getting the curb outside hers dropped but it will take a while due to getting planning permission etc and it's hard to walk down the road with 3 kids and a newborn so it's just been more convenient, but she won't do it again if it bothers me.

Tbh she hasn't had a chance to park there again as I have started parking in front of my drive, on my dropped kerb but my sister has said I'm being petty for no reason and making her life harder and it's not a big deal! And it's really irked me because now I don't know if I'm being unreasonable or not!

So your new neighbour with young children is struggling to park outside her house and you want to make her life harder for literally no reason at all…. Or is it because you paid for a drop kerb and she hasn’t contributed? I’m answer to your post…. Yes you are being unreasonable. Very. I’d be more annoyed with the neighbour with 4 cars than the next door one.

Kattiekat · 13/03/2024 10:11

I think if they had mentioned it or asked if it was ok, that would have been polite.
that’s probably what is irritating you. it would irritate me that they just took it granted they could do this.

if asked you probably would have said no problem?

so say to neighbour that you notice she is doing this and you understand why. But please note as you are going over part of my property it would have been great if you had mentioned it to me before doing it especially as it over such a long length of time.

the neighbour needs to speak to the household with all the cars so they can have space to park.

Dropped kerbs belong to the owners of the houses they are situated outside, and would have been paid for either by the current or previous owner and factored into the value of the house accordingly - I thought that was obvious?

No they don't belong to the owner. They belong to the council/highways. It's a public highway, they just charge for the privilege of making it a bit easier to drive over. It brings in revenue.

I'm so happy you did us a diagram to confirm your batshittery 😆

yeah, well, this!

Gettingonmygoat · 13/03/2024 10:14

Have you always been so mean and nasty to other people?

firef1y · 13/03/2024 10:15

You sound as lovely and petty as one set of my neighbours (who genuinely seem to think the bit of road outside belongs to them).
First even though you paid for it to be done, you don't own the dropped kerb, it's not yours it still belongs to everyone.
2nd it's actually illegal for you to park across it, just as it is for any other dropped kerb.

No they don’t belong to them. They are not owned. The council does not sell bits of land in the road and pavement. They just charge for installing the access facility.

TinyTeachr · 13/03/2024 10:15

YABU. The dropped kerb doesn't belong to you. You have paid for an alteration but it still isn't yours.

This is a moment to be nice to your neihbour. She is doing you no harm and has been polite.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/03/2024 10:17

Wow. It sounded petty

and now seen the picture / we love a pic on mn 😂

You are being very petty

So she goes up your dropped kerb and across to her drive to save her tyres

Ans hopes to get hers done soon

It's really no hassle for her to drive up /over /across your dropped kerb to hers

Mintie190 · 13/03/2024 10:17

mykerb · 12/03/2024 21:01

But I paid to have the kerb dropped?

You paid your local authority to make the dropped kerb because it’s public highway and you needed their permission and for them to do the work as the highway authority. Your neighbour has a right of access. Petty and ignorant.

northernbeee · 13/03/2024 10:18

You paid for the dropped curb outside your home, but it isn't your curb. Its on a pavement which is owned by the council. You paid for it because you wanted to access your drive, but you don't own it. You are being very unreasonable.

diddl · 13/03/2024 10:19

Of course the dropped kerb is not owned by the property owner.

But it is surely just to be used to access that one property.

Otherwise neighbours would be paying between them for one dropped kerb!

hot2trotter · 13/03/2024 10:19

Pathetic.
Get a life.

Yeahno · 13/03/2024 10:22

I have often wondered what is going through the mind of someone like the OP. Just pure spite and over possessiveness it seems. She is fully aware of the neighbours situation, fully aware the the neighbours actions have no real impact on her but she just can't help being spiteful just because she can. She seems happy enough to inconvenience other road users by parking on HER dropped kerb but God forbid any one else drive over it.

Emotionalsupportviper · 13/03/2024 10:23

Rosscameasdoody · 13/03/2024 10:02

If dropped kerb access isn’t provided at every property on the road, then it’s reasonable to assume that where it exists it’s been paid for. And OP said neighbour intended to apply for her own. So reasonable to assume that although not psychic, she would have had at least an inkling that OP had paid for her own access.

Not necessarily - many if not most, roads now have at least one dropped kerb - and where it is can be a bit of a lottery.

However the option to apply for one is always there.

Rosscameasdoody · 13/03/2024 10:25

Emotionalsupportviper · 13/03/2024 09:54

No the neighbour isn't.

No-one can impede access to a dropped kerb - not even the person who paid for it.

The offence the neighbour may be committing is driving a yard or two over the pavement to get from the dropped kerb outside OP's house to her own, but that's for the council to address.

The neighbour isn’t what ? You’re basically repeating what I said. Which is that the neighbour is illegally driving over pavement to get to her own drive.

diddl · 13/03/2024 10:26

but God forbid any one else drive over it.

Because it is there only for access to Ops property.

Imfreetofeelgood · 13/03/2024 10:27

This has to be a joke - or a reverse.

The neighbour isn't illegally driving over the OP's property.

The dropped kerb is. for public use. That's why I also mentioned the pavement, which possibly is something the council would be unhappy about.

Yours sound like mine too

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 13/03/2024 10:35

This would irritate me, but I think you’re being a bit petty. Technically they shouldn’t be parking there as it’s just a (to use a mumsnet phrase) “a patio with aspirations”.
technically you shouldn’t be parking over your kerb.

Good neighbourly relations are worth their weight in gold.

Ellie1015 · 13/03/2024 10:37

Try and stop thinking of it as your kerb and it might help.

Feel sorry for neighbours having difficulty parking and cant see any reason for you to be awkward about it.

Poor neighbours are likely at end of their tether with situation that isn't really their fault. If it were me i would block your car in back. (If you hadn't got kerb dropped that would be an extra on street space).

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 13/03/2024 10:37

I get blocked in 100 times a day by a business next door and people who “I’ll just be a minute”, it really fucks me off. I have to remind myself not to be petty it’s not a problem unless I’m going out.

the ones who park on my driveway do get a bollocking though.
