Neighbour using my drop kerb!

mykerb · 12/03/2024 20:54

A new family have moved in next door - not attached we are a row of two semi's each and so on..
I have a driveway and a dropped kerb. So it goes my drive, pavement and then the dropped kerb.

My next door neighbours have a make shift drive (from previous tenants) but NO dropped kerb, it doesn't help that their neighbours have 4 cars and two permanently parked outside their garden so the new neighbours have nowhere to park except down the road because of it but again not my problem!

They have started driving over my drop kerb to park in the make shift drive, I have started parking on my dropped kerb to make a point of it and I did block them in, to which the woman politely asked if I could move my car so she could reverse out, I told her I don't appreciate her using the kerb to park in, to which she replied that she is going to be getting the curb outside hers dropped but it will take a while due to getting planning permission etc and it's hard to walk down the road with 3 kids and a newborn so it's just been more convenient, but she won't do it again if it bothers me.

Tbh she hasn't had a chance to park there again as I have started parking in front of my drive, on my dropped kerb but my sister has said I'm being petty for no reason and making her life harder and it's not a big deal! And it's really irked me because now I don't know if I'm being unreasonable or not!

I don't think you've been unreasonable. Would annoy me too.

She is being massively unreasonable as it’s not ‘her dropped curb’, you pay for it to be dropped but you don’t own it not have any claim to it. You essentially pay to access your drive but it’s not your curb & you can’t stop anyone else for using from using it. You can be as annoyed as you want but at the end of the day the curb still belongs to the council so you’ve not got anything to actually be annoyed about

I thought you weren't allowed to park on a dropped kerb

She isn't. She's driving over the dropped kerb to access her driveway.

OP, I really couldn't get wound up at this. It's not affecting you in the slightest.

ClairDeLaLune · 12/03/2024 23:49

Wow, I never realised people as petty and nasty as this would actually have the nerve to come on here and admit it. Your poor neighbour.

BetiYeti · 12/03/2024 23:50

Surely it would be nice to help your neighbours out? You might need a favour from them in the future?

Amybelle88 · 12/03/2024 23:50

Oh wow. You really did go ahead and draw it didn't you.

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Bumcake · 12/03/2024 23:54

You’re really lucky to have so little to worry about that you can afford the headspace to get into a rip over this. Embarrassing.

OP doesn't park on her drive. She parks across the dropped kerb, so the neighbour can't use it. We've established that OP is unlikely to be ticketed for this, as usually only the person whose property is directly accessed via the dropped kerb can complain.

Anele22 · 12/03/2024 23:58

I suspect this is a reverse. I also suspect that if we heard the other side of the story, that OP wants to drive over neighbour’s dropped kerb to access her parking place, but neighbour parks her own car there, lots of PP would be saying YABU, it’s not your dropped kerb and you have no right to use it.

6pence · 12/03/2024 23:58

Which bit of, you don’t own the curb, do you not understand? Your neighbour has just as much right to use it as you, now it’s there. Same as you both cross the pavement, which you also don’t own.

Ledwood85 · 13/03/2024 00:04

Why would you draw a landscape diagram, then take a photo of it in portrait, making the diagram smaller at the expense of a pointless view of your desk?

Not sure what's the bigger crime - the pettiness over the kerb or the terrible diagram situation. Either way, a sorry state of affairs.

SableGrape · 13/03/2024 00:06

mykerb · 12/03/2024 21:04

Yes you are right, I could report them technically for that!

Really?

Don't be so nasty and petty. You get back what you put into the world and causing someone a load of stress and worry over something that's a temporary issue at best!

EC22 · 13/03/2024 00:13

Yep, you’re unreasonable.

Maybe. But if OP is really new neighbour, how does she know that old neighbour is parking on the road in order to stop new neighbour from using the dropped kerb? And not for some other reason.

Missingmybabysomuch · 13/03/2024 00:53

You are being really petty and very unkind. It doesn't impact you in the slightest but makes life considerably easier for your polite neighbour. Why be a dick?

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/03/2024 00:56

So because you paid the council the cost of materials and labour to change the kerb you think that you own it and have the right to say who can use it?

She doesnt actually HAVE to ask your permission, as it isnt yours. Unless you paid money to buy the land it is on, it belongs to the council.

Oh and FWIW, the council can refuse to install a dropped kerb it is a courtesy not a right.

Kittybythelighthouse · 13/03/2024 00:57

mykerb · 12/03/2024 21:03

Not really, it just irks me how they use my kerb to angle themselves into their "driveway"

Are you serious? You sound mean as well as petty. I’d be embarrassed if I were you.

Youcunnyfunt · 13/03/2024 01:04

for your information you are the one parking illegally, on a dropped curb

the council own the pavement including the dropped curbs, it doesn’t belong to you and you are NOT supposed to park on them overnight

Linlithgow · 13/03/2024 01:04

This has got to be fake....

MaloneMeadow · 13/03/2024 01:16

Even in MN terms this takes pettiness to an extreme. Do you have nothing better to do with your life OP? No real issues to worry about? You must be very fortunate!

Redrunnynose · 13/03/2024 01:29

I agree with you OP ! Do people know how much it is to have a drop kerb ? The council charges over £800 in my area. If it needed resurfacing would the neighbour pay towards it ? I can see why it would annoy you but....as she apologised, hasn't used it since, has such young children, and to be neighbourly, I'd say yes but she needs to get her kerb sorted.

You do realise that OP doesn’t own said kerb?

DreamTheMoors · 13/03/2024 01:35

Some day you’ll look back at this and think, “This. This is payback for when I was a bitch to that neighbor with the newborn.”
And you’ll realise that you should’ve been kind.
But by then it’ll be far too late.
