Frank Hestor reportedly said: “It’s like trying not to be racist but you see Diane Abbott on the TV, and you’re just like… you just want to hate all black women because she’s there.
“And I don’t hate all black women at all, but I think she should be shot.
“(The executive) and Diane Abbott need to be shot.”

Abominable, disgusting. Aibu to be incecsed by this?
Money allows all sorts of behaviours apparently, particularly if you give a lot of it to a political party.

Tory donor Frank Hester apologises over 'reprehensible' comments about Diane Abbott

Frank Hester has admitted making ‘rude’ comments about the politician but said they had ‘nothing to do with her gender nor colour of skin’

I wish people would just say that the comments were racist and unacceptable without feeling the need to say why they don't like Abbott first....

Absolutely

WhereAreWeNow · 12/03/2024 11:04

Yanbu. His comments were so offensive and vile. Totally indefensible.

Honestly, Abbott must be one of the most resilient people ever to withstand the vile misogyny and racism that's been hurled at her throughout her whole career.

Dweetfidilove · 12/03/2024 11:08

Neither The police nor the Tories will take any meaningful action, but maybe he’ll shoot himself and leave my sister in peace.

I mean - Dianne and other black women could do with one less racist in this wonderfully non-racist Britain🤦🏾‍♀️.

Writerscompanion · 12/03/2024 11:09

From the Guardian article: 'His lawyers said the fact that his donation was to a party led by Britain’s first Hindu prime minister, a politician of Indian heritage, was further evidence of him embracing diversity.'

I've never rolled my eyes harder...

Absolutely

Couldn’t agree more.

LlynTegid · 12/03/2024 11:11

@Writerscompanion first defence of someone whose racism is in some ways selective. Someone who hates one ethnicity not another. Or over the last few weeks, many who have been anti-Semitic in comments or actions.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 12/03/2024 11:11

Scum is scum. You can dress it up in a suit and give it money but it’ll always be scum and this man announced just how scummy he is when he opened his mouth.

Moonwatcher1234 · 12/03/2024 10:58

Diane, you’ve been an inspiration to women of colour for years and years. This buffoon doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as you.

Seconded.

For a small group of racist white men Diane Abbott is their worst nightmare. An educated articulate black woman who will call out their behaviour. She is vilified far more because she is black and female rather than left wing. I am no supporter of her politics but this is racist shite. Simple as.

Not just men, unfortunately. You will find many white women here and online equally threatened by the very idea of her.

PerkingFaintly · 12/03/2024 11:18

I'm still stuck at the "Fucking-hell" stage. Shock

My brain melts every time I try to process it. Not merely that he said this, and was comfortable saying it in front of people at work, but all the apologists.

I just... I can't.

bombastix · 12/03/2024 11:19

@C8H10N4O2 - my point is you won't see her for dust because like all those other matters I listed she fancies herself a tough talker but actually I reckon very little on delivery.

fleurneige · 12/03/2024 11:21

Should openly vile and racist comments on MN just be deleted- or should they result in a ban?

BIossomtoes · 12/03/2024 11:23

That poor woman having to open and look at all that bile every day. Absolutely tragic that it means someone as clearly intelligent and articulate as her has been put off going into politics. She’s exactly the kind of person who would be brilliant.

I know. It is tragic. We still have a very, very long way to go in stamping out racism.

Totally agree. Diane Abbot is obviously a very strong woman.
I hope she has plenty of supportive people around her right now. My heart goes out to her.

C8H10N4O2 · 12/03/2024 10:00

Right because as a black woman in the Tories she must speak on every occasion where a black woman has been attacked?

Do you really not see how this is the same mind set in naicer words?

Some of the worst racism and sexism I've experienced was from the brocialists inside the Labour party (who also take money from unions which campaigning against equal pay for women and who historically campaigned to keep colour bars).

There was very little comment in the "right wing MSM" when the the same pundits attacked black and brown women in the cabinet with dog whistle terms around being race traitors because obviously any right thinking black or brown woman must be left wing. God forbid black women have a range of opinions just like white MC liberals.

There is no shortage of racism in any part of society and the smug assumption that virtuous MC liberals are pure and righteous is a big part of the problems that Labour have experienced. Abbott herself has talked about it often in the past - particularly when younger and in better health she was passionate on this issue within the party.

I believe she is the Minister for Women and Equalities, so yes, I would have expected her to be all over this.

I don’t expect every black woman to be an activist and some will even gaslight you into believing racism doesn’t exist, but I expect the appointed Minister to call out racism and misogyny .

I’m a police officer. Without fail, EVERY time I’ve interviewed a suspect for a hate crime, they tell me they couldn’t possibly be racist/homophobic as they have a black/gay friend/neighbour/relative. It’s absolute bollocks.

How utterly depressing that people feel the need to qualify their condemnation of this man with a 'I don't like her but...' / 'I think she's vile but...' even on one of the only corners of the internet dominated by women.

Good god.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2024 11:42

What are your thoughts on the donor's words about her? Are they any less abhorrent because you don't like the Labour Party as a whole?

newnamethanks · 12/03/2024 11:44

Yes they do don't they? Why is that do you think when there is so much suppurating racist hate at its core?
