Husbands constant eating

Long story cut short!
Hubby used to be 23st, took up running and diet 4 years ago, he lost 9 st in 8 months (which I am so proud of him for) But lately he is eating constantly, today I had a/l and actually witnessed what he is eating, Porridge and a banana for breakfast, then left over pasta from last night, followed by some cold meat, then a full packet of chicken satay, followed by a hot cross bun, then he worked for a while, then some more cold meat, run then some more cold meat, followed by his lunch (worked some more, going out for dinner tonight! Another 1/2 packet of chicken satay, then a massive bowl of pasta with garlic bread, all washed down with 6 pints then some cold meat and a hot cross bun when we got home!
I may be being a little jealous but does this sound like a massive amount of food for one person to consume even though he is running?
I am just a bit peed off as usually my daughter 10yold like something before bed but as it stands there's nothing more than chicken nuggets left as he is eating everything in gods name (correctly on my 10th packet of cold meat since Sunday)!

DO you mean "cold meat" as in packaged sliced ham etc? Because damn, that (and that pre-packed chicken satay stuff) gets expensive. If he's noshing his way through all that in just one day then that's costing you all a pretty penny no?

theduchessofspork · 08/03/2024 22:23

He will put weight back on if he eats like that. But that is an eating disorder - compulsive overeating.

The BEAT website is good so maybe have a look at that and then talk to him about it

mummyp1310 · 08/03/2024 22:24

Yeah, that cold meat, I'm spending a fortune (although he does earn 3 times what I do, I roughly spend £6 per day on it for 3 of us, but in reality he eats most of it! ( bit annoyed tonight as I but cheap cold meat for a treat for the dog to go up to bed) and tonight I'm having to give her nothing as he has ate it all 🤷‍♀️!x

Over eating is normally down to stress/mental health. I would be speaking to him about seeing a therapist.

Rumbunctious · 08/03/2024 22:27

It sounds like he has some sort of issue tbh. I’d have said something about the amount of cold meat especially if he left nothing for my children to eat. That’s just greed. I couldn’t sit and watch someone wolfing food like that without saying something of it was impacting others in the house.

That's the thing, he has kept the weight off for almost 4 years eating like this and hasn't put any back on, he runs at least 5k per day, some days 10k then 13 miles at the weekend and he is actually losing a few more pounds for his marathon, maybe I am being silly but it is just the lack of communication with what he is eating that is annoying me, as I go into the fridge for something and it's gone, I buy food for all of us but if I knew I was running low on something then I would make sure I had enough!x

OP posts:
DNLove · 08/03/2024 22:29

If he's consuming that much cold meats I'd buy a joint of ham and boil/bake it and get a meat slicer to cut it thin. Works out much cheaper and it's proper ham slices.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 08/03/2024 22:31

When you say 'lately' how long has it been going on for?

It's been cold, dreary and grey for what seems like forever and lots of people have colds. Both of those things tend to make me feel starving hungry, like I've got hollow legs. Any chance it's just a temporary thing because he's feeling extra hungry for some reason?

mummyp1310 · 08/03/2024 22:33

Just to add, it's not cold meat but anything is game, anything in the fridge is easy pickings, I'm just so fed up of having nothing in for any of us bit not sure about raising the issue as I know he had a weight problem before (too heavy) and he is burning calories while running, but a simple you need to buy more of ......... wouldn't go amiss!x

OP posts:
ncfoedthois · 08/03/2024 22:34

OP the problem isn't his eating but his failure to plan. Which is surprising as athletic people usually watch what they eat!
If he needs more protein etc he should really be consuming a protein shake not eating lots of cold meats which are processed and not very healthy anyway.
Can he buy his own snacks/food that's separate, so the rest of you don't get surprised by an empty fridge?

Since he lost the weight 4 years ago bit has been worse the last 6 months, nothing to do with weather, just seems like he's back to how he was when he was fat but running now so he can eat too much!x

Do you think he could be bullemic? That's a lot of food and not 'that'. Much ruining?

soupfiend · 08/03/2024 23:02

Im failing to see the problem to be honest.

He uses a lot of calories so consumes a lot of calories, like most people who do a lot of exercise. He will have quite a high muscle mass presumably.

My OH eats a lot, he walks a lot at work, around 10-12 miles a day. He eats what seems a huge amount to me but isnt putting on weight, very slowly losing weight, probably around 1lb every couple of months (when you get old your appetite reduces and he is also on diabetic medication to reduce appetite).

You shouldnt supplement foods with shakes etc, they're full of additives, artificial sweetners etc.

You should be getting as much of your nutrients/protein from food and only topping up where you cant (if you cant eat a lot of volume for example)

Copperoliverbear · 08/03/2024 23:08

Tell him he's being greedy and over eating x

StringTheory1 · 08/03/2024 23:11

Running 5km a day is only going to be accounting for one hot cross bun and maybe a couple slices of his ham. Where are the other several thousand calories going?

And that amount of ham, plus all the beers etc means his diet is horrendously high in salt & sugars. Seriously, no amount of running can out-run the damage that is doing to his organs.

Unless the OP can afford lots of meat he's not going to meet the amount he's aiming for. Good quality protein shakes shouldn't have too many additives or artificial sweeteners.

Deffo not bullemic, although he only runs 5k I
On weekdays with at least 20 miles running over the weekend he walks in between his running so he averages about 12 miles per day between walking and running!

In between running he is walking, he averages around 12 miles per day running/walking, the weekends when he does his long runs he burns around 2000. Calories by lunchtime! I understand he needs to consume more but a little bit of a heads up wouldn't go amiss!

I dont know what cold meat he is eating so cannot say (and neither can you) about additives and artificial sweetners.

Nearly all protein drinks have artificial sweetners, I havent found any that dont (and I am supposed to drink them myself as I cant have huge volume of food but need high protein, but I dont for that reason)

Its just communication OP but you have focused on his 'eating' as if that is the actual problem

Just make sure enough food is in, or ensure he gets enough food in

Idontwannawaitinvain · 08/03/2024 23:26

Just open the fridge when he is there and comment on how there is no such and such left you were hoping to give to the child sort of thing to start the conversation casually. Dou you actually want him to eat less or just to replenish things? Maybe he needs to do the shopping to understand?

He is very healthy, as he has just had an MOT at the docs as he had type 2 diabetes and managed to reverse it quickly (within 20 weeks) due to diet and excercise!

Why do you buy it then? Stop buying it then he can't eat it

Ifulikepinacoladas · 08/03/2024 23:30

What have you actually said to him about this situation??
Do you not say something everytime you go to use something and it's been used? Even the dogs meat?
