Husbands constant eating

Long story cut short!
Hubby used to be 23st, took up running and diet 4 years ago, he lost 9 st in 8 months (which I am so proud of him for) But lately he is eating constantly, today I had a/l and actually witnessed what he is eating, Porridge and a banana for breakfast, then left over pasta from last night, followed by some cold meat, then a full packet of chicken satay, followed by a hot cross bun, then he worked for a while, then some more cold meat, run then some more cold meat, followed by his lunch (worked some more, going out for dinner tonight! Another 1/2 packet of chicken satay, then a massive bowl of pasta with garlic bread, all washed down with 6 pints then some cold meat and a hot cross bun when we got home!
I may be being a little jealous but does this sound like a massive amount of food for one person to consume even though he is running?
I am just a bit peed off as usually my daughter 10yold like something before bed but as it stands there's nothing more than chicken nuggets left as he is eating everything in gods name (correctly on my 10th packet of cold meat since Sunday)!

If he's not gaining weight and he's been eating this for a while, he's eating pretty much exactly what his body needs for his level of activity.

I started running a while ago and have found I am absolutely starving most of the time - I eat significantly more than I did before. I try to keep my protein up so it's not strange for me to eat more than 4 'cuts' of meat a day - chicken breasts, steak etc.

He is being selfish by hoovering up all the food with little consideration for the rest of you, but it isn't an 'abnormal' amount of food if he's not gaining weight. I think to tell him that would be unfair. Just tell him to start buying his own!

@retinolalcohol

disagree

people can eat an excess of calories that are not needed and still not gain weight

no one needs to eat as much as OP’s husband it’s just gluttony

People who are putting this vast amount of gorging on hot cross buns, 6 pints of beer, and whole packets of processed meat down to ‘being athletic’ have missed 3 vital points:

  • The DH isn’t ‘athletic’ just because he’s no longer morbidly obese & diabetic. Losing weight is great, but he’s still 14+ stone, and I doubt he’s ‘athletic’
  • The type of foods & alcohol he’s consuming aren’t aligned with a training / athletic diet. They’re storing up problems for bowel cancer, and a whole host of other issues linked to excess UPF’s / salt / additives / alcohol sugars
  • DH clearly has a personality which does things to the extreme (eating to 24stone, then dieting vastly, then running every day, and now eating certain things almost compulsively - this is a pattern of behaviour, not just someone who randomly starts eating lots of packets of ham because they fancy it….. this pattern of extremes is never healthy, and describing it as ‘what athletic types do’ is untrue.

distance runner here and whilst 5k or even 10k a day doesn’t sound excessive, if you’re doing it every day and longer runs at weekend and other walking then hes going to need a decent amount of fuelling and refuelling. Despite his weight loss, he’s still a decent sized bloke and they burn way more calories than women for the same amount of exercise. I don’t do anything like that amount of exercise but some days no amount of good satisfies my hunger! It seems like he’s going down the protein route a lot but all that processed meat isn’t healthy (or cheap) and i personally don’t find the “protein keeps you fuller for longer” thing works if you do a lot of cardio. Is he drinking enough because that can often make you feel hungry after exercise.

xyz111 · 09/03/2024 18:40

Running 5km only takes 30 mins. Not sure how he's getting it up to 12 miles through the day if he's working full time? That is a vast amount of calories if he's eating that volume every day.

THisbackwithavengeance · 09/03/2024 18:46

He's not gaining weight.

He obviously needs the calories if he's training like that.

He's eating protein, much better and healthier than toast or crisps or carb stuff and less likely to raise his blood sugar.

He's a high earner and can afford the extra food.

Honestly, it wouldn't occur to me to be even slightly bothered about this.

But of course it's MN and anyone who eats more than about 1200 kcal a day is disgusting, unhealthy and greedy.

@THisbackwithavengeance

it is unhealthy and greedy what he’s eating though

🤷‍♀️

All those nitrates in those cold cuts can cause cancer.

It’s 100% cow not 100% protein!

Its certainly made of cow. Ive tried all myriad of whey and pea proteins and unfortunately they clump badly and are unusable for me as I dont drink shakes. Its protein though, contains all the right amino acids (although the collagen powder is missing 2 of the essential ones but I have those in my diet anyway)

soupfiend · 09/03/2024 19:48

LuckySantangelo35 · 09/03/2024 13:07

@orangegato

it is about the volume of food too

NO-ONE needs to eat all that

You said this twice now

Who are you to say how much is enough or too much?

OP also set out (although hasnt been back, frustrating) that he isnt overweight, is still losing some weight and has good health when he goes for his MOT)

So how come you've decided he's eating too much?

EC22 · 09/03/2024 19:52

Sounds like he’s done great getting himself healthy.
Do a meal plan or shopping together- he isn’t eating too much or he’d be gaining weight. If he’s leaving the fridge empty need to shop better make sure there’s enough protein in. And ask him to be a bit more considerate.

JohnTheRevelator · 11/08/2024 23:56

He drank 6 pints?! Of what? Is it physically possible for a person to actually drink that much?!
