Husbands constant eating

Long story cut short!
Hubby used to be 23st, took up running and diet 4 years ago, he lost 9 st in 8 months (which I am so proud of him for) But lately he is eating constantly, today I had a/l and actually witnessed what he is eating, Porridge and a banana for breakfast, then left over pasta from last night, followed by some cold meat, then a full packet of chicken satay, followed by a hot cross bun, then he worked for a while, then some more cold meat, run then some more cold meat, followed by his lunch (worked some more, going out for dinner tonight! Another 1/2 packet of chicken satay, then a massive bowl of pasta with garlic bread, all washed down with 6 pints then some cold meat and a hot cross bun when we got home!
I may be being a little jealous but does this sound like a massive amount of food for one person to consume even though he is running?
I am just a bit peed off as usually my daughter 10yold like something before bed but as it stands there's nothing more than chicken nuggets left as he is eating everything in gods name (correctly on my 10th packet of cold meat since Sunday)!

Is he doing more running than usual? I find running and swimming makes me starving weight training makes me not want to eat for hours after? I’m just trying to think of why he’s a bit more peckish? Is he anxious about anything? I went through a phase a couple of years ago where eating used to calm me down and it was a vicious cycle but I did manage to break it with distractions wasn’t easy!

thinkinghuts · 09/03/2024 06:36

your daughter but not his?
you pay for the food and he eats 3x as much?

he sounds like a keeper

thinkinghuts · 09/03/2024 06:40

Long story cut short!

what’s the “long story”

He ate a shit tonne of shit food and did no exercise and was enormously fat

He stopped eating a shit tonne of shit food and started exercising daily and lost a load of this fat. He’s now 14 stone.

Has he begun to eat more or has he always eaten this quantity of healthy food and managed to lose weight.

If the former, he will begin to put on weight but unlikely to ever even remotely reach of echelons of 23 whopping stone given he’s exercising and his intake is of decent enough food

suki1964 · 09/03/2024 07:29

Don't buy pre packet meats for him to snack on, do as I do, cheap chicken drumsticks - £3kg - roast them and leave them in the fridge. Also hard boil eggs

Hes taking the protein he needs thats all. just hes doing it the expensive way

I snack on cold cooked meats when Im hungry, as does DH. Saves reaching for the crisps and biscuits. I have bought packets if out and about and the hunger has come on, Id rather eat a packet of cold meat then head into a bakers

I also make a couple of KG of yoghurt every week as Im not too keen on cold eggs and find yoghurt keeps up the calcium

PoppingTomorrow · 09/03/2024 07:34

You need to talk to him. I'd be worried about his emotional state.

Mumdiva99 · 09/03/2024 07:43

When my oh used to eat a lot for sport he cooked chicken breastst to have with rice. Also eggs are good. Chicken thighs are cheaper.
Processed meats are not so healthy for all sorts of reasons.
Come at it carefully in 2 ways - one is that you need 'family food' so you always know there is something for the kids, pets and you.
The second is from a health and cost perspective. There is so much online about meal prepping.
Protein powder is controversial- I'm not a fan - however it is a cost effective way of getting protein and some are purer than others. It's quick and convenient.

PossumintheHouse · 09/03/2024 07:58

I can understand him needing some extra food due to his active lifestyle, but does he realise how much he’s fucking himself with all of the sodium in the packaged ham/satay?! Really, really unhealthy to eat so much processed shit.

soupfiend · 09/03/2024 08:05

Love the way everyone wants to try to pathologise someones eating (a common theme on this forum) and decides they know already what the blokes eating even though OP hasnt really set out what it is

anxioussister · 09/03/2024 08:05

People are getting very focused on his nutrition but I think the actual issue is he’s being selfish.

i’d sit him down and say you really need him to start being responsible for his own snacks because it’s leaving the rest of you in the lurch.

if you shop online can you make him download the app and add what he needs to the basket?

have a shelf in the fridge which is his and one which is for the rest of you?

if he can’t manage to be considerate about his families food then he probably does need some help with disordered eating…

he sounds very self-centred if he spends his whole time on himself, going out running, then eating so much that his child has to go without. Has he always been so selfish?

Noseybookworm · 09/03/2024 08:11

Have you spoken to him about it? I would be asking him to go to the shops and buy some more stuff seeing as he's emptied the fridge, and reminding him that other people in the house want to eat the food too!

NameChangeAgainAdvicePlease · 09/03/2024 08:12

@soupfiend you can buy plain unflavoured unsweetened protein powder from all the places you get protein shakes/drinks online. Then you can add whatever you like to it, fruit etc, even put it in savoury soups

soupfiend · 09/03/2024 08:43

I use protein powder myself, it has nothing in it but protein. I put it in my food.

But the poster specifically said 'protein shakes' and I havent found one single one without artificial sweetners.

what brand has literally nothing else in it apart from protein

orangegato · 09/03/2024 09:53

It’s less about the volume of food more about the selfishness of eating everything without a single shit given as to what’s left for the rest of his family. Selfish men are grim.

LittleMonks11 · 09/03/2024 10:00

All that processed ham is horrific. I would encourage him to refuel on healthier food.

You need to sit down with him and talk about it.

Meantime allocate a shelf in the fridge just for him. The rest is for the family and out of bounds for random snacking.

Can't tell whether it's greed, eating disorder or just pure inconsideration/thoughtlessness.

SensationalSusie · 09/03/2024 10:07

Is he neurodiverse?

Sometimes sensory seeking can branch out into overeating, especially with Autism/adhd, and when the person is stressed.

Even if he isn’t ND, a few of the strategies to prevent overeating could help.

ncfoedthois · 08/03/2024 22:34

OP the problem isn't his eating but his failure to plan. Which is surprising as athletic people usually watch what they eat!
If he needs more protein etc he should really be consuming a protein shake not eating lots of cold meats which are processed and not very healthy anyway.
Can he buy his own snacks/food that's separate, so the rest of you don't get surprised by an empty fridge?

Maybe he doesn't like sugary things and is craving savoury flavours as part of his hunger?

xsquared · 09/03/2024 11:14

There needs to be better communication between you and your dh about plans for food.

If you have planned for items to be used for certain meals, after school or before bed time snacks etc, then let him know.

If he thinks you are restricting what he eats in his own home, then there's no reason why he can't do an extra food shop that is just for him for fueling and recovery for running.

Zanatdy · 09/03/2024 11:28

If he’s training for a marathon maybe why he’s eating so much. Though 6 pints won’t help!

Yes they are. Women can also be greedy but wouldn't finish off the contents of the fridge with no thought for anybody else.

I think back to my granddad and the very physical work he did every day. He must have burned a lot of calories but he never ate like this, there just wasn't the money to do that. He filled up on the foods that were available, bread, potatoes. He would have had no truck with this kind of thing, family first.

@ncfoedthois

his eating IS a problem - he’s eating far far too much

@orangegato

it is about the volume of food too

NO-ONE needs to eat all that
