I got saxenda but couldn’t bear to inject myself!! Waste of money

You honestly can't feel the needles. They're not like vaccine or blood needles they're thinner than a human hair!

Pmddornot · 07/03/2024 22:59

How much are injections per month? Would I start with the lowest dose and work up?

Between about £180-300.

And yes.

I’m actually thinking of coming off Wegovy because the side effects have been absolutely horrendous. I’ve been on it since the start of January and I’ve lost a stone, but I’m absolutely ground down and exhausted by how ill I feel 2-3 days per week. Tonight I’ve started vomiting which is a new side effect for me. I haven’t eaten anything since lunchtime when I had less than half a pasta salad, so why I’m suddenly being violently sick every hour is a mystery to me.

My week tends to look like this:
Tuesday evening - inject.
Wednesday - no side effects during the day. No loss of appetite either so have to be careful with what I eat.
Wednesday night - insomnia. Through the night I’ll have short bursts of sleep of about half an hour followed by 2 hours being awake.
Thursday - crippling stomach pain and nausea throughout the day. Generally can’t face eating so have to try and force myself to eat something bland.
Thursday night - stomach pain continues through the night.
Friday - wake up rabidly hungry and remain hungry through the day. This day is really tough - I’m tired, I’m hungry but I know the stomach cramps will return that night if I eat too much.
Saturday and Sunday - these tend to be the best days - reduced appetite with no other side effects except for toxic sulphur burps people can smell from across the room.
Monday and Tuesday - no side effects but appetite no longer reduced.

For a long time the good days and the weight loss would see me through the bad days, but as I increase my dose the bad days are worse and last longer and I don’t think I can keep going - I’m dreading my next injection. I’ve thought about reducing my dose but my appetite wouldn’t be surprised on a lower dose now.

I'd go for it. I started Mounjaro on 24th Feb and I've lost almost a stone already. I've got a lot to lose but I'm amazed by it. It works on your brain as well as your stomach.

Here's the thread that convinced me to give it a go - https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weight_loss_chat/5007744-mourjano-starting-soon

Mourjano - Starting soon! | Mumsnet

I have decided to start with Mourjano. Have put an order in with Asda and should hopefully be delivered soon! Anyone else going to give Mourjano a go...

Icepop79 · 07/03/2024 23:14

I don’t really know anything about mounjaro. Does it have the same side effects? It’s cheaper than I’m paying for Wegovy and if there’s a chance I could stay on something like that without the side effects, I’d be interested.

ThinWomansBrain · 07/03/2024 23:15

I take semaglutide in tablet form for diabetes - but need to lose weight as well.
with the tablets, you work up in incremental doses to the full dose.

I think it depends; a friend gets it privately and gets lots of counselling and support - and I guess paying large sums £££ concentrates the mind.
If you get it online - or prescribed with no support backup - you're rather left to your own devices. That presupposes that you overeat and/or make bad food choices because you're hungry.
Probably sounds odd to someone that doesn't have issues with food - but a lot of overeating is likely to be through habit, rather than because you're hungry, and habit is also likely to be the cause of unhealthy food choices as well.

In my first six weeks on the full dose of the tablets, I really focussed on eating only when I was hungry, and healthy choices of food. I lost 10kg - and got shingles.
When the GP asked whether I was stressed/lowered immune system, I merrily replied that shingles aside, I felt great, spoke about the weight loss - at which point she said that my body was probably stressed at the rapidity of change.

so try it, but with caution.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 07/03/2024 23:23

@Icepop79 That sounds dreadful and like you need to come off it asap.

I'm on Mounjaro and don't have any side effects at all. It's possible you could have a reaction to any of the weight loss drugs, but it really doesn't sound like taking Wegovy is having any positive result for you at all and it's not worth making yourself ill over.

Tonight has broken me and I can’t imagine I’ll be able to take another dose after what I’ve gone through this evening. I’ll look into Mounjaro tomorrow and see if it’s worth trying. It certainly can’t be worse than what I’m currently facing!

Pmddornot · 07/03/2024 23:23

Yes but it gets more expensive as you move up doses.

Please do your research first - it's not a rash decision.

And work out what you can afford. Some people respond with hours of their first dose, some not for a few months.

Some have no symptoms. Others really suffer from constipation/diarrhoea/vomiting etc.

It's not a quick fix!

I got mine from Bolt Pharmacy but there are plenty of others, even Asda online Pharmacy and Boots do it. Shop around for the best price.

These drugs help you to loose muscle more than fat and once you stop taking it you will regain the weight. A quick fix never works long term. You would be much better trying to get to the bottom of your eating habits. Although I appreciate that this is a difficult thing to do .

My eating habits are fine - but with pcos and long covid any sort of meaningful weight loss feels impossible! I lived on about 600 calories for about three months and lost nothing.

I know you probably won't believe me but it's true 😬😣

There's an awful stomach bug going around that laid me low last week with very similar symptoms!

Not saying they're not side effects but just something to consider!

Lumiodes · 08/03/2024 00:27

Honestly I think it needs to be banned for weight loss until there’s enough supply to meet the needs of diabetics who have an actual medical need for it. As pp said, diabetics get regular monitoring and blood tests - I’d be reluctant to take it without supervision. There is already a pill alternative (Rybelsus), that’s what they’re switching diabetics to now that they’re all becoming ill because they can’t access their injectable medication.

AvonleaHeart · 08/03/2024 00:30

I did it and I lost weight... But ita my biggest regret.

I put about half back on, but it has COMPLETELY changed my body shape.

I used to be a classic hourglass and now very tummy heavy/apple-ish.

It seems like where I lost weight and it distributed completely changed.

For reference I have gained and lost my whole life and never experienced this.

Also only 31, so don't think it's due to hormones.

I genuinely believe that Ozempic changes the way your body gains and loses weight.

For me, I would NEVER do it again.

I was also regularly throwing up.

It doesn’t lose muscle it loses fat.

Aussieland · 08/03/2024 00:48

I am torn. I tried it for a bit with some reasonable results from a similar size to you

I have always struggled with losing weight in that I can be incredibly healthy, exercise like a demon and not lose weight but Keto/600 calorie a day milkshake/ozempic worked. Unless I go extreme the “calories in calories out” just isn’t true for me and my body is healthier but not thinner. (People will disagree but all bodies are different and I can demonstrate that easily and your n=1 doesn’t count more than mine!) I did 1200 calories a day plant based and super healthy and exercised 6 days a week and felt amazing but was still fat!

I stopped with ozempic after a few months because although it worked it made me feel crap and I also LIKE food (and eat reasonably well) and ultimately being able to eat nice things outweighed my annoyance at being fat! It also gave me no control which would have been fine when I was single but living with someone and eating out etc meant I couldn’t regulate my food intake to match standard meal times! When I stopped I put all the weight back on

i think ozempic is good in the same way as Keto/milkshakes in that you can quickly lose a lot of weight and then you either stay on it forever OR use that as a springboard for long term change and to allow you to exercise etc and work out what you are willing to give up for slim ness!

ultimately all bodies are different and we all have a different set weight. I think once we get to that weight we can maintain but if you go under then there is little you can do to stop drifting back

remember too (hopefully you know this) that your weight is not your worth and being fat is not laziness or lack of will power. Do it for the right reasons but whatever size you are you are still an awesome human in a powerful body

Hmnnnnn · 08/03/2024 00:50

I genuinely think that reading this thread emphasises eating healthier food , reducing carbohydrates and exercise ie 20 min walk a day is a better way of loosing weight! All these meds are just a short term solution.
Also taking Ozempic is depriving people who need the medication for medical reasons.!

TryingMyGoddamBestHere · 08/03/2024 04:47

Tbh I've been where you are and thought about trying wegovy/ozempic or whatever magic drug has been around, but decided against it.

On 2nd January I started on a calorie defecit and light exercise. I am now 1st 4lbs lighter and feeling so much better for it. Still got a way to go, but the weight is coming off and I find it easier as I can eat what I like as long as I stay within my calories. I also find I'm eating so much better as healthier choices mean j get to eat more food lol

The money I was going to spend on weightloss drugs I used to go to a personal trainer to get me started, and the 1st advice he gave me was if you eat too little I.e. under your BMR, whilst you'll initially lose weight it won't last as you are not eating enough to give your body the fuel it needs to do the most basic of functions.

I was totally surprised at how many calories I was allowed per day, and I'm finding it so easy to stick to. As a 51 year old who's been obese all her life, I was desperate for a "quick fix" and I finally feel like I've found my stride without medication.

You have to do what's right for you and I'm not knocking weightloss drugs, but it is possible to lose weight without that help. Believe me when I say this, as I never thought I would be that person losing weight and feeling good about myself.

Best of luck with whatever journey you decide to take x

Saytheyhear · 08/03/2024 06:32

Physician, Dr. Tyna Moore has some great research on this. Her suggestion is to support people who have a little bit of weight to shift as well as those who are obese too.

Danfromdownunder · 08/03/2024 06:36

Would recommend for sure. I’m on it and have lost 12kgs in 5 weeks. I would not do it without medical supervision though just to be safe. Get regular bloods and check in with your GP. The side effects are minimal for me and everyone I know that uses it.

Nicole1111 · 08/03/2024 06:55

What else have you tried so far? Personally I’d be considering something less drastic, like calorie counting.

You are aware you still need to check and monitor intake while using medication? Its not a case of you take it and it just makes you lose weight in and of itself?

You still have to eat less and if you dont you wont lose weight

These interventions are just tools to help people eat less.

OP will still need to calorie count or low carb or follow whatever works best for her in terms of lowering intake, its just that the medication will help with cravings.
