Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:25

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

Untaxed wealth:
Second homes, rental properties, investments and companies as well as cash deposits.

These things are taxed in much of the EU

I haven't got a second home but I think they should be taxed. I haven't got a rental property but income from them is taxed, investments other than ISAs are taxed.

Goforitagain · 07/03/2024 10:56

Dividends before you pay tax amounts have been drastically cut, DH has fell into this this tax year and I will be caught in it next tax year, Though I will probably just sell a few shares so I don't have the faff of reporting it as it will be only over by less than £100, it was £2000 you could earn in dividend income but £1000 this year and then £500 next so stuff is taxed. CGT allowance has been drastically cut as well

I absolutely acknowledge both those points. But really when over 65s starting talking about their " hard earned cash" and what they believe it should entitle them to I find it completely tone deaf as to where public services funding is actually coming from in 2024.

The youngest baby boomers are currently 59, not "over 65s".

Don't blame the woeful state of public services in this country on ordinary people who have done nothing wrong other than aging. People live longer now not because of their pensions or investments but because of medical advances. It's a fact that we are going to have to pay a lot more for a lot longer to ensure decent services as we all age and a Government committed to ensuring this would be a start.

What's your solution, Logan's Run on zimmer frames?

It's the " hard earned cash" eg: untaxed wealth I have the issue with. The concept that they are entitled to free and unlimited acsess to health and social care whilst holding the vast majority of the nation's property and wealth on which they pay virtually no tax.

I'm in that despised demographic. I'm still working past state pension age and paying tax on that and of course on my reduced occupational pension.

I don't expect free and unlimited health and social care. I have private health insurance which I pay for and expect to sell my house to pay for care if I need it.

that's the new made up "boomer" and in the new made up "boomer" it is 60 not 59.

tillytoodles1 · 07/03/2024 11:40

I have two brothers who both live on different continents. It's lovely to be able to see them while chatting.
I can see their houses, pets etc.

Most 1964 boomers are still 59 - and eight years away from their state pension.

Boomer is most commonly used to paint all older people as rich or racist ,refusing to hand over nice homes , using all our hard earned money to keep themselves alive

The problem really is that they are using our hard earned cash to keep yourselves living in the manner to which they think they are entitled (33 % of the public spend is on pensions and another huge chunk is on the NHS). The lack of insight into this is far more irritating than any amount of video calls.

Bearing in mind that the elderly population is increasing, the percentage of the public spend going on pensions will be much much higher when you're claiming your pension.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/03/2024 12:11

Just reading back. Some comments on this thread are spectacularly hateful! Dh and I are boomers struggling to pay our bills and mortgage day to day like most of the rest of the population. I find it extraordinarily ignorant.

plantlover34 · 07/03/2024 12:23

I would just like to say that as a member of Generation Zed, I find this gen z abbreviation very offensive and I think it's being used to discriminate against me with people saying I don't work hard enough (presumably because I don't have any of that "hard earned wealth" hmmm)

Lol

tittybumbum · 07/03/2024 13:20

voicenotes ! So narcissistic!!!! Stop!!!!!!

I have seen some pretty weird examples of overuse of the word narcissistic but this one takes the biscuit.

What is narcissistic about using voice notes?

No it won’t because boomers are a blip. As soon as we’re all dead the ratio of pensioners will return to more normal levels.

That's not what's on the government state pension website:

The differences in the growth of the pensioner population and that of the working-age population has a demographic impact. There were 280 pensioners for every 1000 people of working age as of 2020. This will increase rapidly from the 2030s and will reach levels never seen before by 2070, where the ratio is projected to be 393 pensioners per 1,000 people of working age

It's bloomin' boring. On and on they go, complaining about and putting all the blame on the 'baby boomers'. Yes, the failure of world peace, the growth of weeds on your patio (if you have one), the disappearance of Kate and the price of fish are all the boomers fault. Are the moaners now happy? Or just jealous of what others have?

hollyandivyknickers · 07/03/2024 20:43

@tittybumbum

yesh I just imagine people walking along going ‘blah blah’ into their phone like they are soooo important and expecting the other person to listen without any clue what the content is. At least with a text you can skim it.

maybe self absorbed rather than narcissistic but still a very high opinion of what they have to say.

It's increasing because of the 'bulge' of the baby boomer generation - it won't continue to increase.

TBF not those born in 1964 they have another 8 years before retirement.

The point I’m making here is that on MN, the boomer bashers frequently generalise that this generation have retired early on massive final salary pensions and are mortgage free in their huge houses that they bought for tuppence hapenny. This was just another boring boomer bash.

not a boomer BTW.

Londonismyjam · 08/03/2024 09:40

SomersetTart · 07/03/2024 09:53

Older people pay tax on their pensions, tax on earned income, they pay stamp duty, VAT, fuel tax, road tax, council tax, capital gains tax etc etc.

Retirement isn't come kind of Caymen Islands with Bingo and blue rinses.

Under the current system we are all entitled to free and unlimited access to health and social care. If it was means tested a great percentage of retired people would still be entitled to that as they are amongst the poorest people in the country.

When I was a kid in the 1980s older people had all the best houses, pensions, nice cars - it was a time of huge youth unemployment but I don't remember people blaming the old for having lived long enough to have got themselves in a better position. We just thought they'd earned it and they deserved some compensations for a life of hard work. We knew one day they'd lie down and die and it would be our turn.

This. And we all know that the term ‘boomers’ is used to denigrate the older generation. Such faux naivety here.

Catsmere · 08/03/2024 10:24

Nearly 61, so born late in the Baby Boom. I make one video call a month, catching up with two friends I haven't seen in person for five years and may never meet again. My humble apologies if this outrages your sense of propriety for what Old People should be doing, OP.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 08/03/2024 16:27

Finlesswonder · 06/03/2024 12:29

I don't think ageist means what you think it does. It means "discriminating on the basis of age", not "noticing people of the same generation develop similar habits"

No, it's ageist. People are not the same because they were born in the same year or the same decade. We are all different and have different viewpoints, interests and habits.

How naive are you! I'm a 'tail end' boomer and I won't get a state pension for another 6 years. £10k a year is hardly "the manner to which they are entitled"!!!! I still work full-time as I always have done! When I started my working life I fully expected to get my state pension at 60! Don't you think working and contributing for 40+ years should count for something, and prevent older people from living in abject poverty?

Thankfully I have my own provision, but I won't be living the high life even then!

And that's MY hard-earned cash too, thank you very much!

Your "lack of insight" is staggering. You will get old too, if you're lucky. Then the shoe will be on the other foot!

Same age as you. I get video called by my Gen Z offspring when they are away from home. Oh and work video calls... I do a lot of them.... but so do my colleagues in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s...

I'll email my boss on Monday advising that I am now officially too old to make and receive video calls, shall I!??

What a silly premise for a thread?!!

PaulGalico1 · 08/03/2024 17:59

It is a sneery, unpleasant thread but you get a lot of this on MN. I must apologise to everyone for living to 63, for working (still working), buying a house (sorry I know this makes a lot of people very cross), generally still breathing in and out. I teach so think I might still contribute to society - again sorry!

Runnerinthenight · 08/03/2024 17:59

Finlesswonder · 07/03/2024 07:35

I did know that "OK boomer" was a slapdowm but before this thread I didn't realise boomers were so insanely sensitive about being born when they were born that we would actually have posters arguing we don't need to use specific terms for generations at all.

You don't know much do you.

It's the way the term is used. It's pejorative and insulting. Stupid and narrow-minded too.
