Boomers and their video calling obsession?

Anyone else noticed this? Work and family members, if they're a boomer then 9 times out of 10 they try to video call you. I think they discovered this during lockdown and have now become obsessed
I'm a millennial btw

OP posts:

This whole thread is absolute gold. Would love to see a spin off "why are boomers so obsessed with Facebook now?"

It's confirmed what I've suspected for a while about the average user of MN (older!) but I'm really confused as to why people think boomer has negative connotations? Why would it be bad?

What, like why do people use Facebook, because I wonder that whatever age they are, why would you use such a website whether you are boomer or millennial, hence deleting WhatsApp of which I was quite an early adopter years ago.

midgetastic · 07/03/2024 07:59

Why is "boomer" negative?

Grouping people according to simple characteristics is generally a bad idea - especially targeting the older population in a society that is so agist people spend a fortune trying to look younger . You would never start a thread like this replacing the word boomer with a slang word for a person of colour for example - you'd recognise the stupidity and offensiveness straight away , but agism is cool it seems

. Boomer is most commonly used to paint all older people as rich or racist ,refusing to hand over nice homes , using all our hard earned money to keep themselves alive

I have never seen the term boomer used in a positive way - here we have them obsessed with something the OP dislikes

We never have "why can't other generations be like boomers and..." something that the op likes

So in short the term boomer is used for a specific group based on age ( age is a category in our discrimination laws ) in a way to spread hate and divide society - and a divided society is a weak society

I did know that "OK boomer" was a slapdowm but before this thread I didn't realise boomers were so insanely sensitive about being born when they were born that we would actually have posters arguing we don't need to use specific terms for generations at all.

People are not accusing you of ageism due to sensitivity over when they were born. I took issue with it and I'm gen X. I also explained to you quite clearly why your post was ageist. If you're comfortable with being ageist, that's between you and your conscience. No need for all the faux naivety and framing others as over sensitive for challenging you. It doesn't minimise their points, it just makes you appear insufficiently intelligent to understand them.

I'm not sensitive about when I was born It's the way the term being used on this thread and others. Always over generalised and associated with something negative. I have no problem with being part of that cohort.

Copied from my own post above.

Oof. So, you’re gaslighting, minimising, bullying and victim-blaming now?

That. Any negative generalisation of a particular demographic is simply wrong and unfair. I'd say that the baby boomers and the millennials are the groups who've been targeted most in this way. As a baby boomer it annoys me no end. And as the parent of millennials I'm equally frustrated on their part.

saraclara · 07/03/2024 08:51

Oh, and the only person who video calls me is four years old and wants to see her grandma.

BIossomtoes · 07/03/2024 09:18

augustusglupe · 07/03/2024 06:18

Oh I’m 1964, thought I was some sort of Boomer.
Whatever I am, I don’t like video calls 🤷🏻‍♀️

You are a boomer, right on the cusp though.

Thanks for the explanation as to why we dislike the term @midgetastic, you’ve left no room for doubt.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 07/03/2024 09:22

Boomer is most commonly used to paint all older people as rich or racist ,refusing to hand over nice homes , using all our hard earned money to keep themselves alive

The problem really is that they are using our hard earned cash to keep yourselves living in the manner to which they think they are entitled (33 % of the public spend is on pensions and another huge chunk is on the NHS). The lack of insight into this is far more irritating than any amount of video calls.

ilovesooty · 07/03/2024 09:24

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/03/2024 18:45

The term is 'Baby Boomer' because we were conceived and born in a literal baby boom after the war - returning soldiers and increased standard of living etc. 'Boomer' on its own is always used in a patronising and derogatory way.

Exactly @CaptainMyCaptain . The term is Baby Boomer. Boomer as a stand alone term on here is invariably sneering and insulting. It's not new as @ProfessionalBuilding states and it's not whining to object to it.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 07/03/2024 09:27

Sorry not quite 33 % more like a quarter.

As we did for those older than us and younger people will do for your age group. It's the basis of the Welfare State.

From what I see on MN there is a huge amount on insight from older posters into the struggles suffered by upcoming generations of young people in terms of finance, climate change, housing, mental health etc.

People living purely on the state pension, especially women, are not living in a manner that you imagine. A large percentage of them, especially those renting live close to or in poverty.

People living on private pensions are not using your hard earned cash they are using their own and that to which they were entitled as part of their employment contracts.

This kind of thoughtless, divisive, inflammatory and uniformed post contributes nothing to the argument.

You try living on £200 a week and see how you get on. It’s not your hard earned cash, it’s tax you have to pay and we pay it too. Presumably you use the NHS that we were all paying for before you were born? And attended the schools we paid for? And your kids attend them too?

do you not think 70 and 80 year olds deserve to live .or use the NHS for health is that what you are saying could you clarify if this is what you are meaning?

Give it 30 years and then, when the term 'millennial' is a derogatory term for someone who is out of touch with the modern world and blamed for society's ills simply because of when you were born, perhaps you'll understand.

Or you could just figure it out for yourself now.

Please educate yourself, the situation now is incomparable to that at any time since 1945. The sheer voume of non working adults is far, far greater, especially in comparison to the number of working adults. The birth rate has been below replacement level since the '60s- it's the whole reason for the "boomer" mokiner. As a generation despite being the wealthiest to have ever lived and having the highest life expectancy, they have not come even close to paying for their own social and health care.

Sorry for not dropping dead as soon as I retired then. FWIW I'm still paying tax as are the majority of retired people with a workplace pension.

It's the " hard earned cash" eg: untaxed wealth I have the issue with. The concept that they are entitled to free and unlimited acsess to health and social care whilst holding the vast majority of the nation's property and wealth on which they pay virtually no tax.

And nearly all of us are paying for our own social care with increasing numbers paying for our own elective healthcare. Everyone I know has paid for their own hip/knee replacement and cataract surgery.

Mrsjayy · 07/03/2024 09:45

my aged parents are still paying tax on their pension and they are not even uber rich "boomers" playing golf or languishg in their large houses rolling about in their money!

what untaxed wealth ? you are advocating that older people are "stealing " nhs money what with their entitlement to life Imean how dare they be alive with heart conditions and dodgy hips!
